At the age of 90, “Star Trek” actor William Shatner made history Wednesday when he and three others were launched into space on a Blue Origin rocket. “I was overwhelmed with the experience of looking at death and looking at life,” he tells TODAY. “The whole thing was indescribable.”

    • I would not think he's 90 years old. I would think he's in his 70s. Most people would lose their head to Dementia or Alzheimer's after 80. He's doing awfully well physically and mentally for his age! He might be able to live to be 110 if he's doing this well at 90!

    • Yeah, here you have the PRIVILEGE, and HONOR to be among the very few humans in HISTORY to view our planet from space, and these people are more excited about doing somersaults. Meanwhile, Mr. Shatner is GLUED to the window. Humbled to the core. Then, they make it back, and congratulate each other on their zero-g selfies, while popping open champagne. Meanwhile, Mr. Shatner barely has the words. I’m sure he wanted to use the word, “awesome”, in its original, and intended definition. But, I’m sure his traveling companions wore out its meaning, already. “Dude, did you see that totally awesome back flip I did in zero-g?” “Yeah, bro! It was awesome! I totally took an awesome pic of it while I threw Skittles in the air!” “Awesome!” “AWESOME!” Meanwhile, Mr. Shatner is weeping for the future.

  • I saw Shatner at a sci fi convention. The audience was on the verge of rioting because the electricity had gone out, but the charismatic Shatner ran to the center of the stage and yelled orders at everyone, which they obeyed to the letter just as had happened on Star Trek. It became so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. He is a natural leader in real life. But before Shatner restored order, the dim lighting, overcrowding, and rowdy audience enraged the hot-headed James Doohan, which caused him to scream at the audience to tone it down and stop blocking the fire exits (nobody listened, LOL). Someone should ask Shatner about this incident. To my then-young imagination, it really did seem that Captain Kirk was real. And so was the short tempered Scotty. One of my best childhood memories!

    @spankytag@spankytag2 жыл бұрын
    • Very interesting he chose to describe the contrast of "death" describing the blackness of Space vs. "Life" on Earth. However, all you need to do to know there is some form of life out in Space is go out and look at all the bazillion stars in the night sky. The Universe and our Galaxy are very much alive and active. Nothing scary about that. It is wonderous.

      @CarrieLuikens@CarrieLuikens2 жыл бұрын
    • @@CarrieLuikens sure. I also get that feeling when looking at the stars in the night sky. But I think it would be different if you are confronted by the void while careening through the air in a tiny space capsule. He was probably already terrified based on his description, and knowing that everything and everyone he’s ever known and loved are back on Earth probably deepened the horror of it all.

      @spankytag@spankytag2 жыл бұрын
    • @@CarrieLuikens also, I think his reference to the tiny “skin” of air or atmosphere that humans can survive in highlights his point. The fragility of human existence on earth vs the huge mass of the void that we can not survive in, which in his mind at that moment represented death
