  • That walking around in circles social experiment works just as well in MMO games. In Final Fantasy XIV, I once noticed 3 players kneeling in a row on the edge of a circle in Limsa, so I kneeled behind them and waited. We accumulated enough players to draw attention and eventually we filled in the entire circle with probably over 100 players which took about 2 hours. Nobody wanted to be the first to stand up up and move on. I've even got screenshots off the occasion to remember it by.

Any one of those people could have won the death lottery by having the highest tower of positive charges built on their head (electricity will take the route of least resistance and distance). It's so horrifying that they could've been just seconds away from death if the connection happened through them and not a higher point on the ship like the smoke stacks or the radar equipment.

In Hawaii, the basalt from lava flows has resulted in beaches with black sand, while the Isle of Wight in the UK is known for it's multicoloured sands. Just as the geology of an area dictates the nature of the land, it will also determine the composition of it's beaches.

This also helps me tune out noise I don't need to focus on, like someone's T-Mobile phone ringing 4 blocks away, so that I can concentrate on cars at street crossings or conversation. Very useful for getting around, but a double-edged sword; loud noises paralyse me and normal day-to-day tasks like dish-washing can sound like the walls of Jericho coming down.

  • That "object" they are circling around is a famous Scarab monument at Karnak Temple in Egypt. According to ancient beliefs, circling it for a certain number of times is said to bring various forms of blessings. Specifically, doing 5 rounds is believed to ward off envy and attract good fortune, while 3 rounds are said to be beneficial for those seeking wealth. If one is looking for a partner, circling it 6 times is recommended, and for those hoping to conceive, 7 rounds are suggested. This is the legend that lies behind the practice of tourists circling the scarab and it's pretty common behaviour at that temple.
