We saved the best for last for Abandoned Portugal Season 3! Today, we're unraveling the mystique of a breathtaking medieval castle nestled in the Portuguese mountains, forsaken since 2008.
This castle's roots trace back to nobleman Joao, a revered figure in the late medieval era. Built in the 14- and 1500s, and renovated across centuries, its essence reverberates the ancient fortifications of its time-a testament to historic typology and grandeur. Towering structures, annexes, and a private chapel on the same property adorn this historical marvel.
Joao, a Knight of the Order of Christ, shaped its legacy, yet the castle endured periods of desolation. For 120 years in the 19th century, it lay dormant until life returned. But destiny's whims dictated its abandonment once more in 2008.
Stepping into its hallowed halls revealed an astonishing array- dozens of guns, numerous swords, and even a full-size knight's armor were still left behind. Join us now for an unparalleled exploration into the perplexing past of this castle, a grand finale not to be missed in Abandoned Portugal 2023. Gather your popcorn for an unforgettable journey through time.

  • I can't tell you how often I see buildings centuries old and wish the stone walls were exposed. The structural stone and wood that give the building so much character. I've seen properties basically falling down rebuilt and restored, so this wonderful place should be saved. It should be occupied again. Thank you both for the work you do to bring us these videos. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year. 🎄

  • Very nice. And by the way Martin Luther was a 1600s Reformation founder. He was known for putting his thesis on his professor door in the middle of the night. He basically blew catholicism out of the water on why he thought it didn't make sense. The pieces that fit on the back of a boot for riding is called a spur. And I'm so glad you found those final rooms. That will teach you to look into every door you find. Just to make sure nothing is there. Great video guys.

  • Beautiful well worth the 20 hour drive. Thanks for the lovely gift of showing us this splendid castle. My only thought was only 3 fire places to heat all those stone rooms ? The curtains would have been to keep out draft . Is it warm in Portugal? Also most guns were black powder thats why they had the powder horns with them. Most of trays and other serving pieces were pewter.Loved it guys have a wonderful Christmas holiday!

    • As a Catholic on the video at 21:34 would you say that was a communion host? If so it wouldn’t be a consecrated one would you think? I hope it was a regular host, maybe blessed. Curious what you think?

      @Cheetoluv@Cheetoluv4 ай бұрын
    • I am also Catholic and I also found all the Catholic objects in the rooms so beautiful and so emotional. I loved it all. About the Host , I was also surprised and shocked to see it there. Is it a consecrated Host, I am not sure, but who knows with a wealthy and powerful family and Devoted Catholic one, at that, anything is possible. I am surprised there was no Chapel there in the Castle, as most families from the middle-ages and up had a Chapel in their castle. Most castles at that time would have had a resident Priest living in the Castle, and if so there would have been a Consecrated Host on the alter. I pray that this is not so there and that that it was just forgotten to have it moved to a Living Church.

      @Bissola1@Bissola13 ай бұрын

    • They think a Frigidaire is a French make also.

    • @@peggys1140EXACTLY! I caught that, too! Frigidaire is American. Straight out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. There are so many other things they say that shows how clueless they really are. I mean, at the very least, they could use the technology they grew up on(I.e. their iPhones and google) to research things since they have already walked through these “abandoned” places.

  • I was hoping you'll come across a very old toilet during medieval time but there is none. I enjoyed this video being able to see the original furnitures and photos of the noble residents of the castle. Happy that that things inside the castle and its rooms are not yet decaying. They are still in tact,
