In today’s video we’ll be talking about …
A Fedex Federal Express Boeing 757-200 freighter, registration N977FD performing flight FX-1376 from Chattanooga,TN to Memphis,TN (USA) with 3 crew, was climbing out of runway 20 when the crew stopped the climb at 5000 feet reporting a minor issue requiring them to work checklists. About 15 minutes later the crew indicated they needed to return to Chattanooga and needed some time to run the checklists, no emergency was declared. Another 5 minutes later the crew reported they still needed time to bring the flaps down, then they would be ready for an approach. The crew reported ready for the approach another 4 minutes later and commenced the approach, advising they were having flight control issues but no assistance was needed. While on approach the crew requested to abort the approach advising they now had an unsafe gear indication. The crew subsequently indicated that after landing they would not be able to vacate the runway, they were able to lower their landing gear, and declared emergency. The crew subsequently requested a low approach to have the airport check whether the gear was down. Following the low approach both ground staff and tower reported they could not see any gear. Emergency services were alerted to a "no gear landing" at alert level 3. The crew advised they would be stopping on the runway and would evacuate, they had about one hour of fuel remaining. The aircraft positioned for a no gear landing on runway 20, then advised they wanted another orbit, approach clearance was cancelled. About 10 minutes later the crew intercepted the localizer runway 20 again and touched down about 85 minutes after departure but overran the end of the runway. Tower immediately closed the airfield when the aircraft touched down. There were no injuries.
Chattanooga's fire department reported: "Public safety agencies rushed to the Chattanooga Regional Airport late Wed night after receiving reports that a FedEx757 was on its final approach with a landing gear failure. The call came in at 11:04 PM on 10/4/23. CFD, CPD and HCEMS quickly staged in position and waited."
I hope you enjoyed this video and learned a little aviation fact for today! More to come tomorrow!
Wishing you all the best!
Joe

Amazing production, Joe!!! Thanks for having me be part of it. Great review and explanation!!
no replies???
@@VoltzAviationyou count as a reply dude, and now me. So 2 replies 😂😂😂
This is an excellent example of effective communications in handling the emergency.
Yes, indeed!
Well, except for the declaration of an emergency part. The ATC did that on their behalf as soon as they reported the “flight control issue”.
@@Markle2k Good point!
Having heard other ATCs speaking really quickly, sometimes to pilots who are not native English speakers (and not as fluent as Capn Joe!), listening to this one was a pleasure - circumstances not withstanding! He was so calm and clear, there was next to no chance of misunderstanding from him. It was an excellent example of how to be a top ATC! Great pilots too!
Indeed, exactly!
Well, it is Tennessee.
You could really hear the pilots voice change throughout the incident, the strain in it, once they realized what they are up against. But they stayed so calm and collected... What an amazing display of professionalism!
I'm halfway on the video and I have to say, this has been the very best video you've produced, Captain Joe! WOW! the checklist explanation and the care you've put on making this, really complements the backstory! well done!
Absolutely!👍
Thank you❤
The pilot took "FRAGILE HANDLE WITH CARE" to another level
Another great feature from ATC was relaying messages from Tower (Tower clears you...) allowing the pilots to focus on one controller and not having to switch back and forth between multiple frequencies at each critical stage of flight
My mom works as ATC in Chattanooga there and I have sat up in the tower a few times. Crazy to see this happen at this little airport! Glad to see the safe landing they made and that everyone made it out just fine.
Good to see you back in action Captain Joe. Yes, I like this format. As a pilot, I get the perspective of all parties with intelligent input. A good pilot is always learning.
Indeed.
Chattanoogan here, I’m incredibly proud of the response from the local emergency services, the training for an incident like this proved to be instrumental. Great job by all!
This definitely will be another Aircraft Investigation episode! Amazing how the pilot kept his cool.
That intro made me feel a little nauseous! I’m so glad you’re back!! 🎉
KZhead comments system is pretty junk so you may not see this comment, however I'll post anyway on the off-chance you will. You say that the alternate system drives an electric motor which drives a hydraulic system which releases the hook to unlock the landing bay doors... Which of the three main hydraulic systems is that connected to, or is it an independent one? Early in the video, you hypothesised that their #1 hydraulic system was completely empty - could that also, possibly, lead to the landing bay doors not opening? And I watched the original upload by VASAviation the other day, I've been a subscriber of theirs for a few years now and I agree that they are indeed one of the very best ATC channels on KZhead! Thank you so much for this collab and your pilot's eye view of what (may) have been going on that caused this accident. I look forward to hearing your conclusions when the NTSB report comes out.
Superb video! Even thought I am a former flight attendant, I am a nervous flyer. Your videos have done so much to inform (and calm) me and give me the confidence that the crew at the pointy end want to safely get to where we're going even more than I do! Your videos have helped me become a much better flyer, especially on the ultra long haul flights. But this was your best video yet! Please do more vids about in flight incidents, your explanations really explain exactly what happened and how it was managed by the flight crew.
Thank you that means a lot!
FedEx pilot as well as everyone at Chattanooga did an excellent job!
Thank you Captain Joe. Very interesting explanation of what happened
Wow just want to say what totally professional people we have flying these plane and monitoring the skies. Well done to everyone that night , you all deserve a massive medal. ❤
Love this format! Yes please definitely more videos walking through emergencies or similar with your explanations.
All I can say is wow !! That was some pretty calm pilots and ATC person. Glad there were no injuries and everyone walked away. And I appreciate your analysis Capt Joe.
The pilots actually sounded like .... Yeah we do these no gear landings quite often.
Very much looking forward to an ARFF video! You even make a follow-me car video interesting. Glad you're back!
Agreed; as soon as he said that I’m like, yes please!
Kudos to everyone involved.. great job and amazing vid to capt. Joe for showing "good examples" of handling emergencies...
I appreciate the level of calmness the flight crew had as well as the prompt response from the ATC tower while handling the situation!
Good to see new content so soon Captain! I'm not a pilot but your videos are fascinating. You're great at explaining a highly technical subject in such a way that someone with no subject knowledge understands. I wish I was this good doing it to my customer base. All the best!
I’m not pilot but the communication and understanding of the pilots and ATC was outstanding. Also great debrief Joe another good watch. Hats off to everyone involved amazingly handled situation
Dear Joe! It has been FAR TOO LONG! I acquired my first aviationknowledge on your channel, you have been quiet for a while. Meantime I found two other great sources of knowledge, but it is a pleasure to see a new video of you!
Long time since the last notification from your channel. Nice to have a new video!
Joe- Maui DC3 checking in. Great video! I too had goose bumps just as you said that. Wow, what an emergency, with a good outcome.
I appreciate your calm and cool and easy to understand explanations and commentary
Erstaunlich wie ruhig und konzentriert die Piloten geblieben sind - Das nenne ich wirklich professionell - Sehr interessant gemachtes Video-gerne mehr davon - Gruß aus München
Great and detailed review, thank you! Looking forward to more :))
Nice to get a video from you as I have not seen one out lately.
what a excellence and professionalism for both ATC and pilots
Excellent video: All the players roles described, illustrations, actual video, analysis. Good one, Capt. Joe!
Excellent job from everyone involved, that's what I love to see
Apart from not having flown jets, this session made everything almost crystal clear. It was very interesting. Thank you.
Excelent video on an stressfull situation well managed for all. Keep on!
I can’t wait for Captain Joe’s “Emergency Response Team at an Airport” video!
Absolutely superb video as always Joe! I’ve been watching your channel for 7 years now and you’ve never failed to impress me 🙌🏾✈️
Kudos to every person here. Full on professionalism on all fronts. Joe included!
Great video! Very interesting, especially your explanations in combination with the checklists. More videos of that kind in the future please!
Great video Captain Joe! Scary parts to it as well (such as confirmation of no landing gear). I've flown into Tennessee in May this year (Nashville) and love it!!
Nashville is the airport of choice for all of us living in the metro Nashville, Middle Tennessee and north Alabama area. It's usually cheaper, easy to drive in, easy to navigate, and I don't have to make the nightmarish drive to Atlanta!
Great video, thank you for the walkthrough and simple explanations! So glad everyone was safe!
Another amazing job explaining this!
Great to have someone explain with the checklists and such. Thanks Cpt Joe.
Glad to see you back Capt. Joe! Well done and informative video!!! Hats off to the FedEx crew as well as the Chattanooga ATC. Textbook teamwork!!
Great debrief!
Fantastic video, Joe! A pleasure to watch. Now to wait until Mentour makes a video with the NTSB report.
Thanks, I heard about this earlier and meant to do some research on what happened but got busy and forgot. So this video comes at exactly the right time 😅
Yes please. The ATC to pilot communication gave me chills. But the sense of calm was incredible. Just amazing.
I was Very impressed by that too!
I really like your videos. Great explanations. I will soon be in the US for my pilot training.
Your video and that of Blancolerio are the best I’ve seen on this accident. He seems to think a complete loss of hydraulic fluid on the left side could be the culprit since neither the engine driven or electrical hydraulic pumps worked to get the gear down/released.
Good to see you back. Some of us were concerned you weren't alive
Great analysis! Thank you so much! Love this video!
Yes! A Captain Joe video, you inspired my current project for my graphic design degree and this is really the motivation boost I needed, thank you so much 😀😀
Joe, when you do a video about the emergency crews can you also add how you take a 757 like that off the runway and get it back on its wheels or what ever is done after.
Great video. Detailed explanations
Have missed you, Captain Joe (in *any* format) :) Seriously, I like this format, as well. Looking forward to more. Happy Holidays
As an ATC, imho your video and explanation is very interesting and detailed, thanks for that! I learned something today 😊 And kudos to the flightcrew and the colleague, that's real professionalism
Well Captain, this has been a great video; it gives you the insight of what might be happening inside the cockpit complemented with all the graphics and communication, it's AWESOME. Thank you so much
Great analysis. Very much enjoyed watching. Please consider more videos on systems please.
Thank you Cpt. for this great Video. Detailed, well explained, analytical, appreciative and from the eye of a pilot. Excellent! Danke für das wirklich tolle Video. Guter Einsatz des Green Screens. Well Done
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video Joe. Keep up The great work 🙂👍✈️
Fantastic video Capitan. Thank You
This is a great interpretation based on a sound understanding of aircraft systems. I find any content created by Captain Joe very informative and educational, not to mention it's delivered with British class and German precision! Vielen Dank - mehr bitte!
Excelent review. Thank you for not jumping to conclusions about the probable cause. As a 757 pilot, I have one small point to add, the item about avoiding large rudder imputs above 160 knots is due to the failure of the Rudder Ratio system (powered by the Left Hydraulic system) this item prevents excesive rudder deflections at high speeds, without this system, structural integrity of the Vertical Stabilizer could be compromised if too much rudder imputs are applied. All flight controls remain fully available (except some spoiler panels) through the other two hydraulic systems. Great job, keep them coming!
Thanks Frank! Really appreciate the correction!!!
Excellent production Capt/ Joe.... Love your channel. Keep up the good work.
fantastic and detailed explanation with a lot of photos and long lasting diagramms etc to show hao to proceed ! And of course: a big thnak to the pilots to get a perfect end wothout any humals injuries!°
Wow, even knowing no one was hurt, it's stressful listening to these calls. Almost eerie how calm they remained after the tower confirmed they had no gear, knowing that meant doing something extremely dangerous.
great to see what a well communicated and well executed emergency landing should look like. and fantastic to see the methodical approach to ensure all appropriate steps were taken efficiently, using all resources available.
Awesome explanations! Definitely want more!
Thank you very much for leading us to this incident and all the relevant Checklists and Systems! It was indeed a very informative Lesson to learn and a great Job by both, Pilots and ATC! Thank you very much!🙂👍
My pleasure
@@flywithcaptainjoe 😃👍
Superb narration! and amazing professionism by the Pilots, control tower and ground crew!!
Nice to have the videos rolling back in. Very interesting. And I enjoy VASAviation videos too.
Yes, I, too.
so glad you're finally back now @Captain Joe
Thanks for the the video. Very informative. I liked to know the checklists pilots had to do. Surely I will like other video like this!
I really appreciated all the details.
Heyyyyyy welcome back Captain Joe, missed you and your vids 👍🏻✊🏻✊🏻 very good, very interesting video, would love more like this! Glad everyone was safe
Captain Joe, this is why i like the 737 so much, the manual gear extensions, are pull-cords, which connect directly to the uplocks if im not mistaken Most of the systems on the 737 are manually over-ridden systems, which means if you lose all power and all hydraulics, its no big deal, you could still fly the aircraft, it would be like flying an enormous piper warrior The control surfaces have manual cables from the yokes, the pitch control for the elevator can be done by turning the wheels mounted to the side of the throttle quadrant, and the gear can be extended using the pull-cords under the flap, in the floor, behind the main pedestal on the first officers side Doesnt this make the 737 the safest airliner to fly?
To an extent yes and no if the cables were severed or they broke then you have 0 control of the aircraft. Same applies to hydraulics.
@@MukisaSS yes of course, i have seen accident investigations where that happened, but say only a hydraulic leak and fuel leak, where it left 0 fluid in either, you wouldn't have any hydraulic controls, or electrical power, so no standard systems, no alternate systems, but you would still be able to fly, as long as like you said, the control cables were left intact I know some aircraft have a ram air turbine to provide electrical power and some hydraulics, but i know the 737 does not
Again great content, well done to all those who worked hard to get this landing safe. Amazing people
At that point where the tower confirmed the gear wasnt down, I also got goosebumps. That would have been a heart-flutter moment for the Fedex crew. But huge Kudos to them and everyone for being able to remain calm and collected. Thats certainly not a situation any pilot ever wants to be in for such a large aircraft
This awareness is absolutely necessary. Well said !
Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum angekündigten Nachwuchs!! 🎉😊 Bei uns ist Nummer 2 auch gerade unterwegs, wohnen auch noch in einer 3-Zimmer Wohnung und schauen uns nach was größerem um.
Absolutely fantastic video as always! Aviation is so fascinating to me, and I've always learned SO MUCH from your videos, this one included of course! Thank you, and it's awesome to have you back! :)
Splendit video mate!
🇦🇺 Thank you once again Capt Joe. I loved your detailed synopsis on large system malfunctions. I appreciate the efforts you put into these programs because your thought train on how to resolve issues can be applied to anything. Keep up the great work. 🙏
Top video. Very well comented and noted. Please keep up like this :)
I would really love to see a video about the emergency services :)
the way yall practice and study for any events that might happen to do your job is amazing and commendable...i call pilots the prepors of the transport industry lol and i love that ...much respect
Great insight and review. Appreciate it
Thanks for a very interesting video. It was a pleasure to hear you explain the incident step by step in very clear language.
bravo pilot thanks JOE for explaining the situation and good safety landing
I’m happy to know that I thought the same as Joe with the circuit breaker idea after I heard the alternate procedure wasn’t working, I’m getting better at this.
Please do a video on airport emergency procedures and response! Thanks!!!
Wonderful, so glad everyone walked away. Well done team(s)
Excellent description Joe, between You and Juan at Bloncolirio we now have a much better understanding of what went wrong
The 757 is a tank bit of speed tape she will be fine...hat's off the crew of this aircraft fantastic work
I love this format. So clear to walk us through the checklist and with the tie-in to VASAviation’s video. More please! 😄
Very interesting to hear ATC communication on this one. Glad no one got hurt.
Capt... as always great presentation... I d like to remind you on your future goal to be a chopper pilot... please do some helicopter technical and accident videos as because the info on choppers are very limited... happie landings Capt...
Our Captain has returned ❤
Captain Joe, I would love to see more material like this!
