I bought a wrecked BMW M3 G80 Competition after it had been crashed into a house. The car has unregistered damaged but if the insurance were to inspect this car then for sure it would be declared a complete write off. But im determined to prove them wrong and fix this M3 safely & under budget.
Thanks so much to @jackbuildsit for the help with this build! We couldnt of done it without him!

    • Watch out for Carly!!! No reminder about renewal of subscription, email address in Terms and Conditions which doesn't work, no information on invoice about the annual payment, automatic renewal price is way higher than the one on the invoice. Also there are much better apps that support BMW available on adroid for much lower price. I do not recommend Carly after one year of using it.

  • Hi Mat, because of you I have decided to, for the first time in my life, change front disks with brake pads and tie rod ends on my 15 year old car on my driveway. I'm proud to say its a success. The money I saved on labour can now be channeled towards a urgent timing belt change at the mechanic shop. Greetings from Cape town and thank you for inspiring me to have the courage to do something I had no clue on how to work on my car.

    • Nice man. That's how it goes. Small jobs here and then. Pads and disks today, oil change tomorrow. You slowly buy the tools and work up the courage to eventually do the timing belt yourself.

  • I am sure someone else has mentioned this in the comments but here I go just in case not....where the 1/4 panel meets the other parts I would normally put a sleeve behind the joint. Just a small piece maybe an inch wide will work well. When making the mark on the roof rail and rocker panel, these pieces can be trimmed to use as the backer part. This allows you to have some wiggle room where they come together and lets you weld without worry of melting the thin sheet metal. If you are really experienced with welding sheet metal it isn't required but I always found it helpful. It only takes a few minutes to prep the sleeve and tack it into place. Other than that I think you guys did a really good job, especially for someone who has never done this before. It is great to have someone like Jack to guide you. This is going to be a really sweet deal when you are complete.

  • Honestly so amazing to see all this craftsmanship. It is so hard to cut out exactly enough, let alone stand cut out panels from another car EXACTLY right so it fits. And then welding everything nicely. Work it out so you don’t see it after paint alone is hard enough already. Not to even mention how hard it is to keep overview in what has been cut away and needs to come back. The skills are through the roof.

On the highway the cruise control do know of cars next to you, and track them if they merge into your lane. • It's great to see this on the show . As you can see, the amount of work involved in panel replacement it is a lot more involved in the insurance bodyshops as we have to use manufacturing methods to carry out the repair .dont know if this still happens, but BMW panels were/are actually glued on using special rivets and glue no welding is required .

I love your videos mat, they keep my mind away for the sadness at least for a few minutes an it helps a lot. Continue doing the things you love man. Well... At least i can have some learning of how to fix my rear quarter in this video with you

  • Self piercing rivets not spot welds , when you put a new quarter panel on you get plates that you glue behind the butt joints on the C pillar and the sill, you do NOT weld the gaps you just fill them , that is the Thatcham and BMW methods .Ive fitted quite a few of these over the years. I even know of a story where someone took their car to be serviced BMW picked up the car wasnt repaired correctly and the preverbial hit the fan and the company that repaired it ended up buying the car

    @chartersclose@charterscloseАй бұрын
    • I was thinking exactly the same thing, BMW are bond and rivet. Only snag is, I'm pretty sure he's not BSI approved so technically doesn't have to follow any repair methods 🤔.

  • I've been panel beating for years and I would say you've done great with that 1/4 panel. Doing inner structural panels isn't easy work. It's messy, time consuming and just not nice in general. It's a shame you couldn't spot weld more of those panels as plug welding will change the properties of the panels making them more rigid which is fine but if it's involved in another accident they won't crumple as they were originally designed to do but realistically it will most likely be fine. Nice work!

    @paulfinch1083@paulfinch1083Ай бұрын
    • I learned this by seam welding my race car. When I got hit the damage traveled a lot further in the chassis than it would have without the seam welding.

      @Scoots1994@Scoots1994Ай бұрын
    • Not an expert, but I'm very interested in your point regarding the crash properties of a repair like that. I suppose it's the main reason why some car repairers on KZhead have been heavily criticised? (see Arthur Tussik's criticism). Thanks.

      @L_78_@L_78_Ай бұрын
    • @@L_78_ Basically the structures of modern cars are built to bend and fail in certain ways to minimize the forces the people within the car are subjected to. Going from spot welds to plug welds changes those failure modes to the point it likely will increase the forces passengers feel if there is another impact on that corner, as well as potentially causing more extensive damage to the vehicle as those forces are spread through more of the structure of the car before they are used up.

      @Scoots1994@Scoots1994Ай бұрын
    • @@L_78_ when we repair cars in the body shop we have methods that we have to abide by. A lot of modern German cars are welded from factory but the repair methods say they need to be bonded and riveted in the repair methods. I did an A class Merc not long ago that was part bonded and riveted. Spot welded in places and MIG welded in other places. It's a ball ache to be honest but we have to do it.
