I'm kinda new to hockey, started this year, is there a specific reasons other then sportsmanship for opposing members to basically bear hug the other team or hold them back from a fight? or is it just to prevent further carnage on the ice? I've noticed this action in a lot of fights, example being 3:45 with Malkin

4 years later…. It’s essentially, “I got my guy.” You pretty much hit the nail on the head with preventing further carnage. It’s to keep others excluded from whatever fight or scrap is occurring. Or to keep someone from kicking a player while they’re down so to speak.

Probably was dramatized a little, BUT...it was intentional and a penalty. "Rule 606: Butt-Ending is the action whereby a player uses the shaft of the stick, above the upper hand, to check an opposing player in any manner or jabs or attempts to jab an opposing player with this part of the stick." That is exactly what Zajac did. He should've been called. Don't be quick to assume that Crosby is just acting again, like he has done before.

More than half, if not all, of the rules are there for the safety of the players. Sure, I'm an old-time hockey fan as well, but I'd much rather see someone get called for something they didn't do rather than see someone get seriously hurt with no proper consequences to the person who did the act. With that comes a bunch of cheap shots that should be controlled. If you really want to see a bunch of guys pounding the hell out of each other, look up hockey fights on youtube. It's not that hard.

Probably was dramatized a little, BUT...it was intentional and a penalty. "Rule 606: Butt-Ending is the action whereby a player uses the shaft of the stick, above the upper hand, to check an opposing player in any manner or jabs or attempts to jab an opposing player with this part of the stick." That is exactly what Zajac did. He should've been called. Don't be quick to assume that Crosby is just acting again, like he has done before.

More than half, if not all, of the rules are there for the safety of the players. Sure, I'm an old-time hockey fan as well, but I'd much rather see someone get called for something they didn't do rather than see someone get seriously hurt with no proper consequences to the person who did the act. With that comes a bunch of cheap shots that should be controlled. If you really want to see a bunch of guys pounding the hell out of each other, look up hockey fights on youtube. It's not that hard.
yotta93 meister yeah because letting players fly around at 30 miles an hour checking people in the head. Flying hits, elbows etc. is what the league needs. The NHL won’t be a league very long if all the good players get career ending injures. The league has a duty to protect its assets.

What's hilarious to me is that the haters saying he dove would be calling for his head if the roles were reversed. Moreover, they would continually bring this one instance up for months on end because anything Crosby does that's remotely 'dirty' gets clinged to for months on end (See: Slash on Methot).

I love how everyone thinks they know how much it would hurt. Crosby barely draws penalties anymore (only 16 through 78 games this season) because he doesn't embellish like when he was younger. Why would he be so pissed if he was acting hurt? Not saying it was intentional but obviously it hurt.
People that say Crosby is faking how much it hurt are people who have absolutely no chest muscle, or are extremely fat with a lot of blubber. Trying doing that same motion with your hand to your own chest, and I bet that alone will hurt.
