Sidney Crosby & Alex Ovechkin Reflect On Fun Moments Throughout Their Rivalry

For just the second time in their careers - and first since their rookie seasons - Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin sit down together for an interview. Colby Armstrong caught up to the duo at the NHL’s Player Media Tour in Chicago last month. They talk about chasing Wayne Gretzky’s scoring record, their iconic dueling hat-trick playoff game, and their less-than iconic commercial acting forays.

    • Literally. I grew up in Baltimore between when the Colts left for Indy (still a Colts fan tho) and before the Ravens. All I knew was Hockey, my family had season tickets to the AHL Skipjacks (eventually became the Bandits in 95/96) so I grew up a Caps fan during the Bondra days. When the lockout happened, I was just graduating High School and was SOOOOO mad. Swore it off. Ovechkin? Who cares! But then he started scoring...a lot...and Sid was this villain that we all loved-to-hate. I couldn't help it, I got sucked back in. #GoCapsGo

    • Yes and no. Yes because they will have both left their marks as great players but also no because they'll be others who come in and steal the spotlight becoming the ones that all the young kids look up to. Similar to how one could say the NHL was never the same after Gretzky retired there was pretty quickly two young kids come and steal everyone's focus starting in 05-06. Kids growing up in the 80's and 90's looked up to Gretzky, kids growing up in late 2000's 2010's and early 2020's look up to Ovie and Sid and when they retire there will be another batch of generational greats for kids to look up to like Shane Wright, Matt Savoie, Ivan Miroshnichenko, Connor Bedard, Matvei Michkov (assuming the Russians don't stay in Russia) not to mention guys like Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Auston Matthews and David Pastrnak to name a few who've fallen in the middle of that, so honestly one could argue now a days we are being treated more and more to that generation talent that the young kids look up to

    • As they say, there is always new talent in the pipeline. There are some great young players now and more to come. The key will be is too see how long the new "kids" play in the league. What's "amazing" about these two guys is with all the years they have played, games played and all the ice-time they get, they still can play as top 5 players in the league. Crosby is still one of the best all around players in the NHL. As far as the interview went, it was pretty lame. I was expecting a lot more from it.

And then the last question came up and made me realize that they have respect for each other, but more respect for their own career, family, organization, team, and fanbase to give up that competitive spirit that drives this game forward; to be the very best this sport has ever seen. And maybe I'm giving too much credit to the people around them, they both have a fire unparalleled with 99.9% of NHL players. I'm just glad they both have a cup and still aren't satisfied until they can lift it again. That's the definition of an icon.

  • Today Ovechkin is the biggest superstar in the league. I never thought it would be possible for him at this stage of his career, far into the season to be among the three best in points far ahead of nr.4. Ovechkin is having the best season of his career in the first year of five year deal. I know he can keep it up as long as he is primed and healthy and his linemates keep playing well. 100 pts! He is looking to get it for the first time since he was 24!

Talking about Ovi, I always loved him, first of all for his passion to the game. Amount of talent in this video would be enough for a whole team from lower leagues.. • A couple of years ago, Crosby sat out some part of the all star weekend stuff and him and Murray went to Jackson Hole WY. While there, Crosby just casually dropped in at the local rink and skated with a few buddies of mine. I have a pic of Crosby and my buddy in the corner waiting to do a quick corner drill or something and it is surreal. I talked to my buddies after and they said they couldn't even describe how good Crosby was on the actual ice with them. We all played junior together and a lot of us went on to college and pro, but no one played in the NHL or with a guy like this. His shot was basically invisible until it hit something, and no one is getting the puck from him, ever. He said it stripped any bit of hockey ego off him that he ever had. Never felt like a worse player than the day he skated with Sid ahahahah
