One of the most unexpected European Championship winner ever. Greece won it in 2004 and they were not even considered as an outsider. They did the unbelievable and won EURO 2004 by beating some of the best countries at that time. In this video you will see the road to the final. In 2004 as the Euros were going on, I was dating a girl who I was really into. I don't normally get like that but with this particular woman I knew she was the one. Anyway, midway through the tournament she dropped a bomb on me and said she was having doubts and not sure if we were right for each other. I was up against it. By the time Greece got to the final I'd made up my mind that their amazing run to the final in against unprecedented way was like me having that situation. If Greece could win Euro 2004 then surely I could make this woman change her mind. When Greece best Portugal in the final I used them as the inspiration to not give up. A week or so later my efforts paid off. It's 2022, we've been married since 2005 and have 5 children. Nice one Greece

@@rafinhasupersayagin I was just 4 months old at the time so obviously I can't remember, you don't know how much I wish I was older to really live those moments. I have seen the celebrations from videos and heard stories from my parents, it was pretty wild, I'm sure you can find footage of the celebrations somewhere but it definitely isn't enough to get the same feelings as the people who where there. My parents tell me that there was a great feeling of unity and happiness that lasted throughout that summer as Greece hosted the Olympics as well, everyone was just overwhelmed with joy

Starting from the game vs Spain onwards, because the result vs Portugal was a pleasant surprise we didnt think would have any continuation, streets would empty when Greece was playing and everybody would watch the TV. Especially in the knockout phase, the whole thing was indescribable. We would win, wreck the appartment during celebrations and then the whole town, city, village would descend to the central plaza screaming, celebrating, waiving flags, singing songs etc. The tourists too, the immigrants too.

It was good times when Turkey played the semi-finals in the world cup in 2002, and Greece won the European championship in 2004. Now both countries are far from their good old days. As a Turk, i wish both Turkey and Greece to return to these days in the near future. Respect neighbor.

@@hanz7478 Without Nikopolidis Greece would not have made it. He was already aging back then but he was in excellent form in that tournament. When you watch the matches and see how many captures, difficult ones, he made, you understand why Portugal, Czech Republic and France who were the 3 favorite teams could not score a goal. To be noted, Greece was playing a tactical defensive game which was extremely clean - for example in the match against Czech Republic Greeks did 16 fouls (and all clean and non-violent) while the Czechs who were playing offensive football did 27 or so fouls and many were quite violent ones. A very peculiar type of game that was not repeated again, even by the same Greek team. It was the product of the moment, the right players under the right coach, all tied in a close-knit group that really worked as a team (all of them were friends, no rivalries - quite a rarity in a Greek team!)

just today in one of our slovak newspaper there was article about greece and its phenomenal win in 2004. I was very young back then 10yo and played football, i watched euro and I can tell that greece deserved it. It was shock, but again they had good players, and players make a team )

Nikopolidis, Seitaridis were legit top 10 in their respective positions in Europe at the time and Tsartas ability in long passes was unmatched, nobody in that tournament was even in the same realm as him at that specific part of the game.

Those were literally some golden years for Greece. Euro 2004, Olympics 2004, EuroBasket 2005 (champions) and some other successes, including a very hot economy. After that the change was very traumatic and only now we are gradually trying to get back on our feet. Rollercoaster
