How recruiters in India use false promises to lure students to Canada - The Fifth Estate

We went undercover in India to reveal the pitch made by some education recruitment agents with financial connections to colleges in Canada. Lured by the promise of a quality post-secondary education and a chance to build a life here, thousands of foreign students arrive every year and find what they were promised - and what their families paid for - often isn’t what awaits them.

The government talks a great deal about solutions to the housing problem but have never mentioned anything about correcting the rental situation! Those who cannot afford to buy a house are being gouged by landlords. The next generation of middle class Canadians is going to have to live with their parents for a long time, won't be able to afford the rent, the education, let alone buy a house!

    • @@MarinafromPakistan In the UK, the situation improved now. However, the number of students coming to the UK after re-introducing post-study visa (PSW) has gone up by several folds. Further, the UK economy is also not doing very well at the moment. So, it may be difficult to get part-time work during the studies and a full-time job after completing studies. This year >1L Indian students came to the UK for studies. If each pays 10K pounds per year (I know students pay much more as a tuition fee for masters in science/tech. subjects), which is equivalent to 1 Billion pounds. So, the UK and other Western countries are interested in improving their economy by attracting overseas students, who pay higher tuition fees than the home students.

I thought of Waterloo at first (being top university in Canada vs 15th in US) as I was naive, but Texas A&M gave me teaching assistantship which meant 100 % tuition scholar and monthly stipend. Being from a lower middle class family in India, I took the option. Even 13 years down the line, that was the best decision of my life. I had chance to work with best researchers and professors in world, work in highly funded research labs, publish papers and patent and later get good job in my domain. I never aimed for green card and moved back to India. I applied for Canada and even received ITA but didn't go ahead. It sucks we can only get so far before it gets too messy to follow or it’s a “legal” loophole, at that point it becomes theory without proof so it’s hard to nail down whatever establishments are responsible. The scariest thing is that it’s likely pre-meditated (personal gut opinion)

But being an international students myself, and as a young adult, I did my research on the rent, job market, living costs of the city I was going to: Vancouver. I knew it wasnt gonna be easy from the get go, I struggled but dedicated to school and to my part time job. My personal experience was that most of these students do not focus on their assignments and rely on others to do their part. It was 10x more stressful and, sadly, my strategy to survive (and my friends’) school was to avoid doing school projects with students from one particular country. And worst yet, professors would turn a blind eye to this systemic situation cause I guess everyone was paying their tuition fees.

  • Just do one thing, limit number of international students to 60% - 70% in every college. And college cannot be started if rest 30% - 40% of seats for domestic students is not filled first. If any college wants to go for international students only, then their admission process/audit should go through Canadian government. So there is no exploitation of international students.

  • My sister went to Canada to study animation because it was a quarter of the price, faster, and had better employment numbers than our schools in America. Everything went very smooth, she got steady employment that was willing to sponsor her visas and a reasonably straightforward path to dual citizenship. When we road-tripped up to Vancouver to get her settled, her landlady got upset with us when we pulled out the tools and started to adapt for her a custom bedframe riser. When we checked in to see what we had done wrong, we found her crying on the porch. She said her parents sent her away to Canada without guidance, help, or compassion, and that she was homesick still even 25 years later.

Perhaps it was announced after this video was made. Our government lifted the 20-hour work limit for international students to fill the labour shortage. In the video, it says that the average student has to work a 50-hr minimum wage workweek to support themselves. The change of policy might make it even more attractive for these poor students. I worry that Canada is sanctioning this kind of debt trap. These kids are essentially paying to be our slaves... (p.s. Sean Fraser is a freaking tool. He's the one who lifted the work limit.)
