Editor’s note: This Four Corners episode reports on Australian universities having large and increasing intakes of international students and concerns about many students not having sufficient English language skills to undertake their study. In reporting on those issues, the program referred to Overseas Education & Career Consultants Pty Ltd (OECC) which assisted international students in enrolling at Australian universities. In response to concerns raised by OECC about the program, Four Corners wishes to clarify that the program was directed at the conduct of Australian universities in waiving English language requirements for international students. The program’s criticism was not directed at OECC. The program was not seeking to convey that OECC had waived those requirements, nor that OECC had been selling offer letters from universities.

Man. Australia Uni education standard is a joke. I am an international student myself. I wish I had done more research and talked with other senior students before coming to Australia. I have to pay such an exorbitant amount of money for such a shitty education. They teach pretty much nothing in class. The class (lecture + tutorial) is supposed to last 4 hours but the lecturer sums everything up in about 1 hour 30 minutes. Rest is just break and chill time. I just feel cheated. In the past 2 years, I have learnt almost nothing in uni. It's just depressing to spend so much money on such shithole education. US education model is much better, they at least have SAT exams to filter students and provide scholarship to stand out students but in Australia, no matter how well you do in class, there is no scholarship, you are just treated as a cash cow. Most of the students they enrol are sub-par tbh. Bright students have to drag them and help them pass through group assignments and what not. If you are after PR, come to Australia do your degree and hustle for few years, you will have your PR but if you want to get high-quality education, please just go to the US or Europe where you can also get better scholarship opportunities if you are a bright student and are not just treated as a cash cow. Australia education is just abysmal.

I'm Australian and studied here. I wish I could say it wasn't true but you are 100% right. They should just give out a bunch of textbooks, list a bunch of studies, link a few KZhead videos and tell you to come back for the exam. That would be better quality teaching than the crap I saw. And I have an undergraduate, graduate diploma, postgraduate diploma and a Masters. Yikes, it's depressing to list them all out.

@Flame getting a degree in a completely new language is very different form learning one, in india we study in english from class 1, still till class 12 we have problem comprehending sentences many time, to master german will take atleast 1yr till that time i think and its a lot when your degree is only 3/4yrs

It might be true, but International students numbers are declining in America, mainly because of the unfriendly immigration laws. They go to Canada, UK and Australia instead.

i think its the courses they offer. High quality courses still require a pretty high entry score for both international and domestic candidates. To be clear, I am not endorsing the commercialisation of the tertiary education, however, i do believe that those high achivers who have worked hard will get the education they deserve. And those who is there merely for a piece of paper stands to get a piece of paper.
@@vicnad92 middle class dont go australia in most asian countries there are 2 types of colleges public/govt: hard to get in, more well known and considered prestigious (they get an "institute of national importance" in my country) u need to give national entrance exams and compete with a million students to get a seat private: except 2-3 they accept anyone with money. Rich kids who couldnt get into public or the best private ones and want to study abroad go to Australia Australia is still not that popular in my country, UK and US is more popular.

I remember how aggressive agents are in recruiting international students. They know how to prey upon your fears/hopes and dreams. They will tell all the lies in the world and once you're overseas they know your family already spent too much money for you to leave.

At UNSW they have recently changed from semesters to trimesters despite strong opposition from the student and staff body- student satisfaction has plummeted! All so that they can rush people through their degrees faster and earn more money! All while increasing international student fees and acceptance rate... it reeks of corporate greed

I transferred to Deakin in 2017, and nobody told me before I enrolled that the entire uni runs on trimesters instead of semesters. The compressed timeframe drastically increases the difficulty of covering all the necessary content, and every single unit I've ever taken has been rushed, to the point where I can't even ask many questions in class because it takes up too much time. Hard to really quantify, but it dramatically alters the learning process, in the sense that it's all about just memorising everything you can before exams. The vast majority of my peers don't question anything, or have any idea how to practically apply knowledge to real-life situations involving real problems. It baffles me how graduates are able to secure and maintain useful employment, they seem utterly useless for the most part.
Curtin University had plans to switch to trimester in 2018 but the guild and students complained and were able to delay the introduction. But if they decide to change to trimester, I do not think anyone would be able to oppose it.
Do they get 'rushed' to the degrees faster? Where I come from I've heard of a story of a uni moving to Trimesters...while simply increasing the number of trimesters needed to graduate in comparison to the hitherto number of semesters. Also a quick, annoying, and effective way to grab some cash, but at least the students aren't 'rushed' I guess :\

QUT at Kelvin Grove just built a lovely new sports stadium, amongst many other new developments at Gardens Point. Why they need a sports stadium is anyone's guess. It's almost like they have so much money they don't know what to spend it on.

Saudi Arabia cultural office did an investigation on this they ended up only recognizing 12 out of 43 Universities in Australia as legitimate universities. As such they will not give scholarships to people that don’t get a accepted to these 12 universities. They also backpedaled support for Australian universities in favor of US Universities. Making it hard to study in Australia.

If a student can pass IELTS or a Cambridge exam at B2 level or above they are certainly capable of understanding the content of most degree courses.

@@keithbentley6081 Not really no. A friend of mine passed both and she can barely string two sentences a long. Understanding grammar and being a good ESL test taker does not mean you're actually able to use that language properly. I've seen waay too many kids study ESL (in a non English speaking country) for years and barely be able to use it. It's a common misconception though. I think unis have no choice really. They have to try measure proficiency some way.
I may be wrong but there is a difference between passing IELTS and having a band of 7.5 or above.

My partner is taught English as a second language all through growing up at school and speaks great English also living in English speaking countries. She couldn't pass the test until she had lessons on how to do the exam.

Well I feel pretty normal, parents still rent and stuff....I got two bachelors and a masters on tick and am currently doing further study internationally on scholarship O.O
1- International students pay at least triple the tuition. This money enables the local universities to build more and well-equipped buildings, labs,libraries .2- This money helps local universities to bring in & support more local students, who pay far less (some even with fee help) compared to international counterparts. 3.-international students don't just spend money on tuition, they buy this and that when they live here, They pay rents, they see sights, they buy gifts for their families, they entertain, they shop.....all these money spent will eventually trickle down to the pockets of ordinary Australians. When they finish studying, the majority of them will leave. The degrees wont stay in the local job market. Plus, a degree doesnt guarantee jobs anyway, since uni education is not job-oriented.

The blame squarely lies with the international University. I went to an education fair in New Delhi and Aus and Canadian university's were offering 'scholarships' to students who had scored 60% in the 12th exam. For perspective, it takes at least 95% to get into any decent course in Delhi University

Given the large population in India, it would make sense that 60% would be a cut-off. Same as China, competition to get into a good univeristy in india would be tough so a very small percentage would get in given the large population. Those that can afford it go study abroad. Also, the curriculum in india is fairly more difficult than those in western countries.

The locals don't take those courses because they know it isn't worth the money or time. On the other hand many Indian students want to set their foot abroad at any cost without proper planning or research. So even if the colleges charge them 2-3 times more than what it actually costs the local students, the indians are happy to lap it up. Seeing the craze the consultants, colleges and of course the governments are using them as cash cows. This is s multi-billion dollar business.

I left NZ after 1 year for the same reason (2009), overpriced, overhyped but very sub-standard education. I had to work in India (home country) for 5 years after that to pay off my education loan taken for 1 year in NZ (pretty bad judgement when I look back now but agents really sold it to us). Later, I got a full scholarship to study in one of the Scandinavian countries, was able to find part-time job from the first semester itself and most importantly, the quality of education was top-notch and my entire tuition was FREE (valued around Euro 27,000 per year in 2015). I would tell current students now, especially in India, do not blindly go by what agents say - they only want to send numbers and make their money, they do not care about you or your future.

Unfortunately this is true. I was in a group assignment with a second year student who didn't know how to write any java code half way though the java course. It's sad because he will gain very little from the degree, and there could have been someone (whether international or domestic) who could have taken his place and got a great deal from it. Something to remember though - this isn't the fault of the international students. It's the fault of the universities admission boards, and more importantly the fault of the government that reduced funding forcing the universities to do this.
Government should privatise all universities and cut all taxpayer funds going to the universities.

The funny thing is that IELTS, OET, PTE all are money making machines too. I have seen students who speaks very good English making more than 10 exam attempts and idiots pass first time.

British council in China is totally bullshit. I took the test 5 times but still cannot pass it, either speaking or writing failed. And then I went to Vietnam and just got 7.5.

English is the hardest language to master. Speaking English vs reading writing and comprehension in English are another thing, which is why you see lots of international students fail over and over (I’ve worked in a University)
@@MelaniaRose Well, no. I speak 5 European languages and 3 Asian languages. English is by far one of the easiest language in the world to pick up and roll with. The best thing about English is that because there is such a variety of lexicon, intonations, accents and slang, nobody tells you off if you don't speak/write it like the Queen. All versions are accredited. Try learning a language like Euskera (Basque country) or Pashto (Iran). You will quickly understand what "hard to master" means for real.
U.S. student here. Education is very expensive, and they barely teach anything with the one hour lecture. Send us home with tons of homework and assignment that we gotta figure out with the textbook and KZhead. Education has became an industry unfortunately. The education that I am getting is not worth the money I am spending, and I don’t even pay out of State tuition.
Graduated from Monasj University, I am all down to whatever the documentary stated here. Nearly 99% of the Chinese students in my course never pursue a career of our degree. All just for the permanent residency because the occupation is in the list. A year later, Monash changed my course content to make it 'easier' for International Students to pass and get the degree. They removed all essential units for a Master level: research, policy, workplace managent and work collaboration with services, laws and ethics. I am lucky enough to land myself a job and climb up in my career, because I genuinely love what I'm doing at work. However, I would Never choose to study at any Australia universities Again!

My university in the UK was similar to yours. Difference is that I used my spare time to get to know the UK and the local culture, customs, and traditions better. At least I have a blueprint on how to establish business links with the British now and know how to do business there.

Ive experienced this first hand in Western Sydney University and University of New South Wales as well. You wouldn’t have thought that the prestigious UNSW would be like this too. But if you walk onto campus 80% of students are from mainland China. And there are many in my course who do not even speak English. Last week we were watching presentations from students and one student had just presented their speech in Chinese but with English subtitles. I don’t understand how uni admission standards can be so low. Do they not see the drop out rates? In western Sydney I had a friend from Bangladesh and he had to drop out of our IT course because he didn’t understand the English and on top of that he had to work 3 jobs at once. Not just that he was mistreated by his employers because they took advantage of him (since he was working illegally on a student visa), he had no friends, he didn’t mix in with the other Indian students because Bangladeshs hates Indians. Even his family didn’t like him living with them. He didn’t have a supportive environment at all. The only way he managed to cope was turn towards drugs. He ended up dropping out and transferring into a dodgy college. Honestly the future isn’t too bright for him and he’s not he only one. Many international students just want to escape the problems they have in their country. I can’t say that these students are poor, they come all the way to Australia and that would’ve costed a lot. But many still struggle to survive here. The tuition fees for international are at least 3 times more than domestic students. They pay almost $28000 a year, I know a Nepalese friend who works that much a year to pay off this tuition. Luckily for him he isn’t mistreated from his employers and actually have supportive friends and he has decent English. Many of these international students try a lot harder than domestic students who take university for granted. They have no choice, the pressure on them is enormous. Universities are supposed to be non profit organisations. They get heaps of funding from the government as well. Educators shouldn’t be thinking about making money. It should be how to improve the quality of education for all students.

Western Syd? I believe your fact about UNSW full of Chinese students. But based on my several years on Parramatta campus, I hardly found Chinese at WSU or UWS when I was there. I was the only Chinese in my class for at least two years. My school has the second campus in campbelltown, I had been there several times, almost no international students before the Med School established. I think until now, WSU is still on the bottom of the line of percentage of international students in Aus.
Kevin Tran In Chinese job market, Australian diplomas have been discriminated. If u show a diploma from US or UK, HR will be impressed, if u show a diploma from AU, they’ll only say, ok, good. Cuz they already know Aus diploma has less value compared with UK and US

I am a Nepali and I can confirm this. Many of my friends work in Australia and pay whole of their 28-30k outrageous university fee. They sleep like 4 hours a day, do 2 jobs and many of them have depression. This issue frequently comes in our news channel.

Watching the four corners program and reading all the comments and the number of issues, not just about the language waivers, that have been mentioned, it must be time for an inquiry in the university system in Australia. I always dreaded group projects when I was an international student in Australia. I was in a few international colleges and not a university but my experience was that my group mates were submitting their work with really atrocious grammar and spelling mistakes, or not even understanding what was expected of them, which ended up in myself having double the work re-doing everything they tried to do... I wish I could have dropped out too, but staying in the class was my only option for staying in the country. In my business class, half the students were sitting there wide eyed and confused (or on their phones) because they couldn't understand any of the material my professor was delivering. It was so sad. Many of my classmates were plagiarising each other's work and were often asking me for mine to copy from (refused every single one of them, do your own!). End of term final presentations were such a joke. My professor in Melbourne was actually super fun, intelligent, hard-working and wished the best for every one of us, so I was sad for her that she just couldn't teach these kids anything meaningful.
I am an australian living in India, my kid has to do the same in India studying here and doing and redoing the group activities of others given by the professors . Some never even seen a computer or had one. Not able to do anything, and poor english also here, he complains daily can't cope with these classmates . He wants out I don't have the cash and got trapped out coz of COVID. Now i don't think i'll send him back send him to some other country for Masters. Like USA. We want quality and standards to be followed not like this. I get swears daily ,,"why did you put me here ! ". And i studied in India too, they were doing plagiarism many of them,, and i was the one doing it all alone on my own. I had to re-do SO much of the writtenwork by the international student in group work - big papers, I may as well have done it all myself. This was reflected in my grade and their grade accordingly..... the staff knew that those who could barely answer a basic question were certainly NOT capable off the level of academic writing that I was....
@@sushamamdYour English is honestly terrible for someone that claims to be Australian, I highly doubt the claims you are making, in fact what I think is more likely the truth is that you are an Indian International Student who got screwed over the by the Australian Education system because it sucked you in with great hopes and shot you down with the reality that if you don't understand proper English then you have no hope of passing a Degree that is taught exclusively in English. Sorry but if you can't speak the language then you shouldn't be on the course. I experienced a similar level of disconnection when having to assist a French person learning English in the UK when they had no previous understanding of English, they were a nice enough person but clearly needed to learn English before coming to the UK because they ended up falling behind despite knowing and understanding the basic concepts of the subjects being taught to them.

As an Indian, the cream of the crop in our country do study in prestigious Govt. funded (mostly) or private universities and live a decent life. These international students (most of them) are the ones from the lower end of the classes with money to shell out. Our school education system is the one to blame, they cripple the students by promoting rote learning above all. No one understands the concept of plagiarism (of which I am guilty too). There is a culture of hiring private tutors (even for nursery and kindergarteners) because more teachers = more education (it's the same rote learning but in home too). Learning skills is never on the radar and English is a joke (even in the self-proclaimed English medium schools). I learned more English from speaking it (it was mandatory to speak in English in Uni for me) and watching KZhead than the 12 pathetic years of school. The definition of “literate” in the country is someone who can read and write any one language. There is nothing else to say. I'm sorry you had to go through all these during uni, I can completely empathize with you. What pisses me off the most is these students giving a bad rep (not that it wasn't already bad enough) to the country. Sorry for vomiting in the reply, have a great day.

I’m an international student myself, when I came here there were so many locals, I don’t know a lot of People from my country at campus so I had to force myself to interact with the locals. But in the Present, mostly the uni students are dominated by Chinese and Indian students. They’re always in their own group and talk with their own languages. It becomes difficult to interact with other students, so disappointed.
I even had some ignorant Chinese classmates, they always sat together and play games in the class, didn’t pay attention to the teacher, they only came for absence.

They speak English and they would join any groups with different races in it. But look at Indian and Chinese students they won’t get along with other people they only stay in their own group and they even join Indian/Chinese student association in the university.

One of my friends is now studying Culinary in Brisbane and she said that it’s really a struggle for her to understand the lecture in English. I asked her if she took IELTS and she confessed that her agency didn’t require her. I could only wish her the best.
When I was an international student in 90s, most of us had to go through a bridging course before getting into an uni, even Singaporean students who’s English is native level. Ones could not pass the course, had to give up and go home. What happened to the system!?

Education in Asian universities is thousand times better. It's just students come to universities thinking of international experience and realise that they were sold a fake promise. That's what happened with me and most of my learning and interaction was really from volunteer work, odd jobs and interactions outside my 2-floor university of some building.

I'm a domestic student at Murdoch Uni from Canada, and it is outrageously obvious in the past two years as I've just finished my undergrad degree the massive increase in non-English speaking students - especially from India. Most of my classes I ended up forced to do some group work with non-English speaking students that I ended up doing their work for them just so I wouldn't fail the project. They literally can't even put a sentence together, and it is nearly impossible to understand them through their broken English. And since political correctness means you have to be afraid to tell the truth, lest you be called "racist" or "xenophobic" by some social justice warrior or "inclusivity" staff member at the university, it was always just easier for me to shut up and do their work for them so I could maintain my HD average throughout my course. Why are good students being forced to carry bad students? Why are we forced to pay the price, while these international students get a free pass (and ultimately a free PR visa, which is why they're all there - let's be serious). Another thing they don't mention in this doco is how badly the cultural differences impact domestic students. Students from India especially are very disrespectful to Australian western culture in that they refuse to speak English, they bump into people all the time, they have no concept of acceptable mannerisms in this country. They talk loudly in their native language in the library, they are impolite and don't seem to care that they are behaving unacceptably to western culture and our values. It is extremely off-putting. Yet if anyone dares speak up about it, we're told we need to be "more culturally sensitive" to other cultures coming into our country? Imagine telling any non-English speaking country they need to bow down to accept western values, cultural norms and English language for every single English-speaking student or tourist that travels to their country. It is absolutely absurd, and this is the result of corruption due to cultural Marxism/socialism and anti-western/anti-white (racist) ideology pushed in our universities for the pursuit of virtue signalling.

There was a teacher at my uni who got “gang sexually assaulted” by some foreign students, unfortunately this had been swept under the carpet. The teacher left mid way through the semester and everyone who studied that unit had passed automatically due to her “misconduct dismissal”. After this incident i transferred uni even though only half of my credit points carried through to the new course. Please up the standards of our university for security reasons as well.

When Australian universities have 'branches' in Dubai, Singapore and elsewhere... that's a clear sign your "institution of education" is merely a business! I know so many people were Uni Degree's overseas had no value and the person had to study for their careers or choose to do other jobs. But they were fully trained and experienced people in their professions. Even in Australia, a lot of Uni Degree's are a waste of time. I worked in a office job and the number or persons with Law Degrees is amazing. Yet their in positions of Customer service, Data Entry or Admin positions, that have nothing to do with their Degrees.

Canadian and Australian degrees dont have much value as most students from those countries stay there rather than returning to India. The students in these countries are just there for settlement.
I've been complaining about this for months. As a business student at the University of Tasmania I deal with foreign students all the time. I don't know how they are even passing units to be honest. I just had to work with a bunch of students to write a report on advanced management techniques and these people could barely grasp the most basic of english phrases. Maybe that's why Utas can afford 600 million to buy a new campus.
When you give your presentations have a credits screen/page, with your name as creator, writer, researcher and editor. Sure it dumps your collragues in the pan, but if you don't/can't do the work then you shouldn't get the credit for it. Additionally, speak to your supervisor and ask to be part of a high-language capability group. You're a student, not a language teacher and it's grossly unfair for the university to place that burden on someone who's already busy.
If only colonial English could be replaced at all universities globally with other international languages as mediums of instruction, the non-anglophone best and brightest students, who struggle everyday expressing themselves infallibly in written and spoken English, could excel in academics, too. Undoubtedly, Language is the tool of intelligence. But unfortunately English is the stool of negligence.

Unis used you as an unofficial Lecturer / Teacher in your group work tasks assignments. That's what they do with Domestic Students.
This was very interesting to watch. I work in a major public American university (in an administrative position, not academic), and I think this very same situation could be applied to any similar institution here in the US. I've been in my current position for the past 14 years, and seen a steady increase in the number of foreign students who come into our office (not exclusively but primarily from China.) I do my best to treat all of our department's visitors fairly, but I've had a number of times when I've lost my cool, as some of these foreign students can be incredibly abrasive. I'm not trying to label anyone, but again the Chinese nationals tend to be the main culprits. Quite a few of them have very limited English proficiency, thus they expect us to speak Mandarin. Our boss does speak American-accented Mandarin, but only because his parents are natives of Taiwan. Several times he's intervened when he's overheard groups of students speaking Mandarin amongst themselves because he could tell they were trying to do something nefarious. He'd tell us about his conversations with them after they'd already left our office. Some of the Chinese students use translation apps on their phones to try and communicate with us. They hold up their phones and we read the English translation beneath the Mandarin text. Or -- while imputing their information into their account profile on the computer -- I was driven to anger when the students changed their address 3 times during our session. How do they not know where they live? That information should've been provided to Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the time they entered the US. Unless the information provided at that time was inaccurate. I've had to provide that info myself, whenever I've traveled abroad (as a tourist, never mind as a foreign student!) I understand these students can speak in their native language with consular or embassy staff in their home country, but how did they manage to pass the language requirements before coming here? Granted now -- with the advent of the pandemic -- you can see the impact the absence of foreign students has on our coffers. With many unable to re-enter the country to study (instead being forced to do so online), our department alone has lost literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual revenue, let alone what the university as a whole has probably lost!
It’s happening in so many countries, here in Kenya they started something called Second Module, that’s where the Universities admit the regular students who are government sponsored; afterwards another lot who missed out due to lower marks are admitted to do the same courses. A degree in law requires a minimum B+ in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination(KCSE), plus A score in English language. For the second module a C+ plus is acceptable and a C+ plus in English. They also became innovative a D+ student will be admitted to what they called a bridging course and later admitted to a degree course. These kind of shenanigans led to a lot of cheating in KCSE and As and Bs ballooned until 2015 when a new cabinet secretary for education clamped on the cheating and the number of those qualifying for the university admission plummeted forcing many universities to close several campuses, the second module died a natural death. Education is being compromised and the poor people who have no money are being cheated on their only hope of upward social and economic mobility.
Ditto. I worked in an "Academic Success Center" in local community College. 90% of students were foreign. Many could not pass classes without hours and hours of individual tutoring or cheating. They were not stupid but did not have good enough English language or pre-requisite education.

@Jean juju I believe that instead of limiting the admission slots for Asian students, admission commitee should look for whom willing to make friends with others and studying English seriously. As an Asian student (not Chinese) applying to college, I do hate those type of students too but don't you think such perception and prejudge would be unfair for some deserved and commiting one? BTW, Chinese is the second most spoken foreign language in US so yeah you was right, they are in their migrant process by advocating money to universities.

As an employer, the standard of English that overseas student graduates have, is so bad I have trouble justifying employing them. I’m astonished they have enough English language skills to complete any university level courses.

I met an Indian student who came to study her masters and only once she arrived she was told her entire semester was online (Griffith Uni). She was feeling very lonely as she was home all the time and didn’t know anyone.
In March 2007, I enrolled into The University of Western Australia as full-fee-paying international student to pursue Master of Oil and Gas Engineering at the School of Oil and Gas Engineering. Within a month, the School of Oil and Gas Engineering shut shop citing insufficient funds to deliver the program. What followed later was nightmare. Enrolled students were dumped into School of Mechanical Engineering overnight, with no faculty to teach Oil and Gas units. This torture lasted till December 2009. To date, UWA has not been held accountable for failing to provide high quality education that it promised to hundreds of students while issuing them their offers of place.

I had to ALL BY MYSELF find another school within the university and new supervisors that would take me in. The problem was my original school belonged to the science department and the school I transferred was in the social sciences department. Adjusting from a scientist into a social scientist in the middle of the PhD was a complete nightmare to say the least. Plus they didn’t give me any extra time to adjust. I had to finish in the same time or lose the scholarship and start paying tuition. I graduated on time but seems like my sleep pattern is forever destroyed after years or working days and nights. I’m surprised to hear this happen to you too since you are in what’s considered a profitable area. My PhD was in conservation and the reason behind its disappearance was also financial.

That definitely happens but it has nothing to do with the uni. There are essay writing business online where you can pay to get original essays written for you. The uni would never know it wasn't yours because you submit it and unless the business scammed you and wrote a similar essay for another student, turnitin wouldn't pick up on it.

About half of my classmates in unimelb are international students, including me. I was surprised seeing several of my international classmates having difficulty communicating with others in English. If unimelb is regarded as one of the best in Australia, I could only imagine the level of English at less known unis.
It not regarded as best there is no best, people just pick it because it has Melbourne on it, the second biggest city in Australia so they know the name , its also the most expensive in VIC. Money has nothing to do with quality for the international side of it, its all the same at every Uni. To be very honest i would say that only about 20% of INT students have good enough english to even be there. If your still using phone translation software all the time then its just a waste of time. So many people just cut and paste of wikipedia and use google translate now that learning is a 5min exercise then you get your attendance ticked off and go home. Melbourne is over rated BTW, they get extra marks in rankings from the name
From my own experience, i think it depends which course you are enrolled, if it is business or accounting degree, you are most likely to see more international students. However, i still believe there are lots of international students who do not meet academic requirements.
As a Canadian, It's the same way here. It's asinine that a Canadian student can't receive a quality education because the Universities see Dollars more than sense...
Imagine if that money wasn't flowing in, then Canadian student would have to pay much more and far fewer get accepted in. International students practically subsidise education for local students in Australia, would probably be the same for Canadians. I worked for a school for international students in Perth. Most came from India and Nepal and I was teaching desktop publishing. The school was a private business and failing students, even if they had done no work, was discouraged. The teachers who did fail students didn't get their contracts renewed. Their student visas entitled them to work while in Australia, and, on a show of hands, every single person in my class indicated that they wanted permanent residency in Australia. One teacher had a woman in her class that didn't speak English to her. She sat in the classroom doing nothing and on the last day, she appeared with a USB key with all the exercises on it, completed.

No, it’s not all like that. I believe that, eventually, it comes down to your motivation to learn and how you view the uni. I’m from Indonesia, and I did my master’s in one of G8 unis in Australia. I found it to be way better than unis in Indonesia, almost across the boards.

Universities of Australia are just privatising the profit and socialising the cost. Nothing to be proud of. Just because I buy a blanket at a shop doesn't mean I get to sleep there. The universities will be able to show some skills if students pay to learn here but are not allowed to stay - that would be something creating true value and demonstrating real skill.
If the right to apply for permanent residency was removed for student visa holders and they had to return to their home country following their courses. Then the number of Indian, Nepali, Pakistani, Chinese and Vietnamese people applying for Australian student visas would plummet dramatically. The Australian universities know this very well. They are not selling education as much as they are selling life in a first wold country.

I remember there being multiple seminars in my school in Bangalore where various organisations came and advertised Australian universities. The academic requirements IMHO were too lax and you only need money to join.
I worked in an Australian university some 18 years ago. This uni had around half a dozen foreign campuses as well as a number around the state. This uni was kept financially afloat due to income from foreign students. Eighteen years ago.

Fast forward to 18 years later, things have not change.
I recently completed a Masters of Business Analytics. Having come from an honours degree in psychology, where you needed a high distinction average to make it in, I was . . . well. . . rather shocked. Our final unit was a capstone assignment we did as a group. We almost failed our first submission as, in a group with only two local students (four international), we had to do absolutely everything. They didn't show up to meetings on time, could barely write or do research and had absolutely no quantitative skills, whether writing code in SQL, R or Python or having statistical training. So, it ended up with myself and another local student doing all-nighters while working full-time and submitting without their contribution at all. We would have been better off if we'd had a bunch of year seven students. The worst thing is that they have spent all this money and they are basically unemployable. They have no skills in this area and will probably never work in it.

For the community colleges this is true, not so much for the universities. The universities still have a big proportion of domestic students. For the community colleges the student population is close to 90% international students. FYI: I'm a domestic Canadian that's attended both College and University.
For the English part, it's actually much harder than you think for people growing up learning American accent to learn Australian accent. I study in Canada for 5 years and I'm able to do 30 minutes presentation without stop, but it's hard to understand my what my Australian professor said sometimes.

I teach English as a Second Language in the United States. Reputable universities here require international students to take English exams when they arrive. If they are not proficient, the students must take intensive English courses until they have the skills to study effectively. Aren't the Australian universities doing the same?

I'm aware this is quite a few months late. Kind of, but not really. We have colleges run by universities here that offer English courses to international students before they go to university or any kind of tertiary education, but as far as I'm aware, it's voluntary and not compulsory.
Internationals are required to prove language proficiency by taking TOEFL/IELTS before they apply. If they achieve a certain grade that the uni require, and are accepted into the uni, their English skills are no longer monitored/questioned.

Reputable Universities do the same, they offer 6 months to 1 year foundation courses that not only cover English but also prepare students for commencing undergrad or postgrad studies. As far as I know they couldn't be admitted with less than a 7 on the IELTS. It's just the shady one's that are a facade for getting a students visa and entry to Australia that do this. I feel the government should take more responsibility to eradicate educational fraud in Australia.
Lots of college admits, but where are the jobs for those 100K+ students? Entry level college graduates are screwed without jobs!
To be honest, universities in Australia are not the only government institutions that see international students or graduates as a cash cows. Many other government institutions like AHPRA ( The national medical board) is considering IMGs as a cash grabs as well!
Hats off to the professors and others who came forward and openly talk about the issue. Some people just care about money & bonuses they get and go with flow of making cash. While there are some brave people like these professors who put their careers at risk and speak facts.

I went to CQU Sydney campus and I remember having a class where all the students were from my country and even the lecturer was from my country. The reality is that International students see the degree as a pathway to permanent residency whereas University simply sees them as cash cows. It's a mutually benefitial short term relationship but there are bound to be some long term consequences.
What long term consequences? Once you get permanent residency you are set for life.

These students spend around AUD 60,000 in the form of tuition fee and AUD 40,000 in the form of living expenses. This is good for the australian society. Moreover, these students are of low risk when compared to the refugees. Most are from good foreign families and they always stay from crimes whatever situation they goes through. Unfortunately, these students even after spending AUD 100,000 end up being uber drivers. At the end, it is their choice and I will support this type of immigration anyday over bringing refugees.
In Canada just like Australia, we have lots of international students. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, these international students subsidize the education for local students right here in Canada to a point if we increase some of the entrance standards, it will result in an increase in school fees to local students like myself. I graduated from a university here in Canada and my cost per STEM semester is about $3000 CAD (including government subsidies for local students). International students not only pay about $8000 CAD for the exact same class per semester, but they also have to pay for private health care plans, dental coverage, life insurance, etc, etc. The high tuition fees of these international students allow Canadian STEM research universities and others to keep local student fees low.
It's exploitation of poor people from poor countries. This is a form of slavery. After graduation they get work permits in low paying jobs and pay excessively high amounts of tax. It's a scam!
I’m a small business owner here in London, UK and sometimes we take on students to do internships. Usually the European students speak very good English and integrate very well into our team but I’m shocked how some Chinese students managed to do their degree as their level of English is generally poor. But this is because they don’t mix with people of other cultures in general.

its not just australia. The uk and ireland do it as well. My sister paid 22k a year for medicine, while irish students paid about 1k. When i was in uk fees was about 3k for home students, 9k for international. and class sizes got bigger every year.
Thats why many countries want foreign students as to subsidized local education.

Same here in Southeast Asian country. My faculty is an international program, where we are charged 4 times as much as normal program (around $700 per semester), and international students are charged 10 times as much. What they did was to have teachers who can't speak English to teach us, and most materials weren't in English. We rarely have international students here, but exchange students coming here were visibly pissed off that they had to ask us to be a translator. The quality of the courses weren't even as good as the normal program too. I had to sit in most courses in normal program, because somehow students from normal program can register international courses, but we cannot register any normal courses. Basically we pay 4 times more but we can only register courses that are taught in English.

@@pvasir we have a pretty low minimum wage of $10-12 per day, so $700 is already a lot of money for us here. And yes, we literally cannot afford 1 year of tuition fee in the USA, let alone cost of living. There is only case to study in the USA by being awarded a loan in exchange for working in the government agencies (including universities) for 4-10 years or repay back 4 times the tuition fee.
The main scandal is the back door into Australia.

@@Lazurath101 There is no such way. You would have to apply for a skilled immigration visa, which is separate and has nothing to do with the student visa. The student visa is temporary and doesn't convert into any other visa, it is no further stay.

Guys I’m Indian and have see this first hand. It’s really simple. Do bachelors -> masters in Australia -> try to find a job -> try ur luck at pr. Prerequisites for a genuine student: Come from a well off family Get good ielts score Study hard and get good grades in bachelors. Ps. I don’t know how the ones who can’t speak English manage to get to Australia in the first place.
This is only one side of the story, IMHO. Remember before the 1990s, when government used to fund universities with taxpayer dollars? Well over 30 years now funding for universities has steadily declined. So universities have had to seek funding elsewhere. If you don’t like it, tell your MP to find unis again.
If they don't speak english, then teach them english first, if they're mostly from India, then open recruitment agencies in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, and then give scholarships to local students so its more ballanced. You can probably double your number of overall students along with the income in a couple of years.
Or they can do it like Germany. In Germany, if international students want to study in public universities, which most of the courses are taught in German, and the student is not proficient in German, he/she has to study German in an accredited language school for at least a year until they are skilled enough to use English for academic purposes.
They would be there if they were interested in studying. Both India and China are world's most populated countries and both are Asian, education in general is important in Asia You think those Arabs sitting on oil barrels want to waste time on education? Also many Africans are simply not capable enough to compete with others so USA even has affirmative action to make up for that.

I always envy Chinese. My university has a few Japanese and no Japanese in my major. BUT the half of students in my major are Chinese. They speak their language which I cannot. I was so bad at English and felt so lonly.
We honestly hope to see more Japanese students, but there just aren’t enough Japanese students studying overseas. I have a really good Japanese friend from high school but that’s about the only Japanese student I see throughout the years
I work as an education agent in India and unfortunately I have to say this that the main aim of students willing to study abroad is to get residency. Only 5% see the education they receive overseas as an avenue for better future and learning.
No way anyone from India will be allowed into Australia for years.

The reason why many Chinese families send their children overseas is because of the of the booming economy in China, where we are seeing the rising number of affluent families. But, if China's economy slows down due to financial crisis, this will be a HUGE blow to the Australian Education.
It's already happening with the coronavirus crisis. Universality Of Sydney lost millions in funding due to the travel ban in place.
At 21 min mark they finally start to talk about the impact this is having on our own domestic students. The impact is devastating. Domestic students have to compensate for the lack in many of the international students. What this means on the ground is that they are doing the majority of the work so that the international students can pass. Most assignments are group work even at Masters level and this means that the stronger students carry the weaker students and feel they have to just so they themselves can get a decent mark. The lecturers/tutors/academics are pressured to try to make this work. So much time is taken up in classes just trying to get the international students to even basically understand. All of this is taking precious time away from real research and proper study. Everyone is losing here, firstly our own domestic students, secondly the international students and thirdly the university teaching staff and universities as centers for higher learning. Ultimately our nation and the wider world also lose as educational levels fall. Thank you to those who have spoken out about this.

@@LeicesterStreetCarlton You are quite mistaken, our local students do not "get it for free" they pay later. They start their careers with a huge debt.
The domestic students get the jobs and careers you fool!... The stronger students get what they want in the end. And weaker students drive taxis and work in restaurants but that is still a plus given that they probably earn just as much doing that as they would if they were professionals from where they came from. It's better to drive taxis in Australia than be an accountant in China and travel hours on a train and walk through polluted cities and get paid 10 bucks an hour.

It is the same in New Zealand (with ex-polytechnic that can now award degrees and with private “business institutes” - I can’t speak about our universities). I have seen all of what you write about. I am about to retire after years of giving my best to the students, as their post grad supervisor, while at the same time seeing all the issues described. It’s burn out territory when you care. Now I only have to wonder what will happen to my granddaughter when she goes to uni in a couple of years....
Agreed, the language incompentency is a glaring issue especially in subjects that involve group-work.
One of the reasons why this is happening is, the number of international students is a very important factor for the institutions like the Times to rank world universities. Some Korean and Taiwanese unis have enjoyed much higher ranks than the ones they ought to have making very good use of this trick. So one solution to improve the quality of uni education in Australia would, very ironically, be forget about the bloody rankings. Unis could reduce number of their international students by requiring foreign students a proof of higher level of their English proficiency such as IELTS 7.0 or 8.0, but they chose not to because of money and the rankings. Another suggestion from me is forget about the bloody group presentations which makes no one happy except for the lecturers who can save energies. This type of interactivity in the classroom is also, very ironically, required by the bloody ranking institutions ...
So does it mean that it's better to go in a university / college where majority of students are domestic ?

I don't know the details, but I assumed those who take up Australian university study must obtain on-going employment to remain after its completion. Or am I wrong, and just being a student actually guarantees residency? Still, not much hope university councils will let academic scruples over-ride the dollars. We have the same problem in Canada. Not only in the Universities but also the small private specialty schools. I remember having a group project . Each person had a part to add. A friend and I had to rewrite the parts of the other people because you couldn't even understand what was written. A lot of cut and paste it was crazy. I was like how did you pass the written part to get in.
I met law students from a university in Sydney and they told me that they didn’t understand what the teachers said in classes. Some of them got admitted into the University’s own English department before starting law school because they score less than 5.0 in IELTS (law schools require at least 7.0 for admission). Then all they need to do is to past an internal English test and they enrolled in law courses right after that. A student told me that she was asked by one of the professors to go back and get her English language course done first, she said “there is no way for you to do the program with your current level of English”.
Cash Cows and potential future immigrants.....
UQ (St. Lucia campus) is just as bad. I know a local student who is pulling out of a postgrad course because no one else in her group project is capable of writing an academic report. (Sources were frequently missing and overall a very poor standard of English language skills.) Local students are left with academic and financial burdens of a flawed recruitment process.

Let's face it. The foreign students are in Australia for the working rights and PR afterwards. They're not really here for the education.
At the hospital I worked in a Nurse I spoke to was leaving as her contract was up, I walked around the corner to hear a new foreign nurse tell another nurse she was unable to take notes because she could not write English.

I work with international students and I heard so many student stating that they pay $300-$350 a week school fees to be enrolled but they do not attend classes as they focus working more than the 20 hours they are allowed each week and then there are a lot of international students been here for over 6 years and still can't speak much English but already they finished diplomas in business, marketing, administration, IT cookery and all short of diplomas.
Getting to the stage here in Australia, that degrees from these Unis, in the future, will not be worth the paper they are written on.

There’s an inside joke in my country about Australia that they literally grant student visa to anybody. First apply to The US or EU nation if rejected then safety universities are in Australia. More than not people get in!! A lot of small universities who will literally enroll anybody for money.
More like US or UK, even Germany or France in the EU don't get the same spotlight as other Anglophone countries
Don’t go to Germany! International students are just a pain for everyone, us “local” students included. Apart from that you would have to learn German first. If you plan to stay, good luck, in the job market you don’t stand a chance without C1+ german, unless you want to clean toilets of course

Third world countries who desperately need educated and motivated people don’t get enough of them, and the people taking the easy way out by going to first world countries often end up disappointed by their new, pretty mediocre lifes. I’m actually someone from a first world country that plans to work in the third world. Sure I could live the easy life and earn well in a unionized company, but I’d rather help advance a country that needs it and have memories to live from. Sadly people coming to first world countries vastly outnumber people going to third world countries. Should really be the other way around.
@@Bundesligahoffefan If you graduated from a German uni and are applying for jobs with that certificate then the employer can probably take C1 for granted in my opinion. Well, passing a C1 language test anyway. I do think speaking a language at C1 and at an actual native level are pretty different ballgames, though successfully making your way through uni while stopping yourself from becoming pretty fluent in the language of instruction in the mean time sounds pretty challenging to me.
One of my colleagues in Pakistan sold his property to pay his son university fee in Australia even the classes were off during pandemic. It's a pure business and a new form of plundering Rather than quality education.

@@aylinschade5563 I am doing a degree that has the perception of being more employable, like IT in the documentary above, so we have a fair measure of desperate internationals seeking an edge who, because of university policy, make it in despite poor language skills. This can make group projects very difficult. I would think that Politics and International Studies is less attractive to people with language difficulties.

I just finished my master degree in finance at UvA. All in all, I'm satisfied with quality here.
The new focus on 'group work' and group assignments is so the the one local student can do the presentation etc to ensure the students with poor English pass

In my experience, the focus on group assignments is because it drastically reduces the hours needed for marking, so the university can cheap out on paying academics to mark individual assignments by mandating group work, thereby causing the total assignments needing to be marked to be a fraction of what they'd be if completed individually.

American, UK, Canada and Australian universities is flooded with Chinese and Indian students. By reading history of these 2 Asian giants, I came to know both countries was hub of world education and most sophisticated economy. I hope history will repeat itself 🇨🇳🇮🇳🔂 signs are visible : look at education infrastructure advancement at software studies in India and hardware studies in China in recent decades.
