New discovery: A 60 meter VIKING LONGHOUSE in Norway!

So the news broke today of the discovery of a 60 metre longhouse at Gjellestad in Østfold south of Oslo which continues the very exciting story of the excavations that are currently going on. This area must have been really important, not only in the Viking Age, but for centuries prior going well back into the Bronze Age and possibly beyond. As you might see from one of the older maps, the ancient farm Thorshov (Þórshof) is close by, indicating that this also was a place of great worship.

  • Oh my gosh, what an amazing discovery! How crazy is it that people were farming or walking over this area never knowing the amazing historic treasure just a few feet below their very steps.

  • After hiking around this area of Østfold the last couple of years, and seeing hundreds of ancient sites, one can’t stop to wonder about the importance of this area down through the times. 1000 years ago, 2000, 3000…. So much lost in history, some slowly coming back thanks to historians like Sturla.

    • Im from Østfold, there's definitely a lot of ancient sites here. The region is especially rich in bronze age rock carvings, there's literally over a thousand of them in the region. Many viking age graves also. The region has the most fertile soil in the entire country so it was probably quite wealthy and populated compared to many other areas in the country.

  • A FANTASTIC FIND, MORE KNOWLEDGE TO BE REGAINED. EXCITED TO KNOW WHEN THE DIG WILL BEGIN. Maybe just maybe I can volunteer for this dig, I did for the ship dig last year and because of the koof, (C19) I couldn't. Would be a honor to just wheel out dirt.

  • well they had to have a very big long house because it was too cold outside. and it gave them more room to do things, make stuff , have winter food storage, and the whole big extended family can live in one. I like it! maybe the sheep were in the house in the end room?

  • At sixty meters this site had to be the main destination for ships to bring goods to. Has any shoreline been investigated for evidence , ie, ships, tools or any iron ? Takk Sturla, always, farmer john, son of Ingvald.

  • This was obviously a very important site at one point in time. I would be curious to find out when this site became so “unimportant” that people would farm over it. It is unfortunate that mankind has often gone through stages where simple survival overrides the desire to preserve art and history.

  • Could you please comment on this video "The Nationalist Myth of Vikings", it's from the KZhead channel "TimeGhost History". They basicly claim that there is no such thing as "vikings" because vikings is too much of a diverse group that existed many places.

    • @@VikingStories Yes, I have. That is why I thought this new video from a very big KZheadr would be interesting to hear your thoughts since you are a scholar in this field. The channel in question made the "Great war series" that followed WW1 week by week and 1.3 million subs. Their new channel that follow WW2 called "World War 2" have 600k subs and this channel "TimeGhost History" have 244k subs. But it's all the same people. The video is called "The Nationalist Myth of Vikings". And I would love to hear your thoughts on it. Maybe go over some of the claims they make in the video.
