Light vs. Darkness: Scandinavian Lucia traditions
The 13th of December is celebrated greatly in Scandinavia. The pagan roots to this celebration have lived on for a long time and have to do with Trolls who like darkness better than the light, which I have talked much about on this channel. The demon-like Vettr Lussi would come at night to try out the Yule Ale, which had to be ready by now, and just like in the great Åsgårdsreia, The Wild Hunt, supernatural beings would come to your place, though this time in order to check out if everything is ready for the Yule Feast. And if not, then you surely are damned....

Today, I had the great pleasure of finally visiting the all new Raven's Nest in the heart of Viking Norway. Here, I did a "homage" to the pagan connection of our curious celebration of the Catholic Saint Lucia, who is coincidentally mashed up with both Lucifer and the she-demon Lussi in Scandinavia. Pretty weird, come to think of it. But the celebration is a great tradition!

Our Christian traditions are so full of paganism
It is full of references to our prechristian past because Paul prohibited Judaising. He wanted to make a point that to become a Christian you didn’t need to become a Jew. You could continue to be a Greek, Roman, Celt, Saxon, Viking and become a Christian. Being a Christian and being a member of the nation/culture you were part of before that we’re not to be made mutually exclusive. The early missionaries understood this which is why they allowed and encouraged the preservation of the original culture by creating festivals around the same time with elements from their original culture but sanitised and rebranded with the new religion. It makes perfect sense from that perspective.
Thank you for this great and informative video! I hope Scandinavian culture and traditions live on till the end. Globalisation and mass immigration is a big threat to this.
Dude how is immigration and globalization a big problem for paganism whem most Scandinavians are christians lol
@@pau5781 wait until whatever is left of paganism ( which has made peace and understanding with Christianity now) gets wiped out by Islam.
@@pau5781 By just existing. Ruins everything it touches.
Sturla, You are an outstanding ambassador of your culture and history. I salute you.
May pagan ways grow stronger! Merry Yule to you all!
Thanks for sharing! Hope you and your family have a wonderful yuletide!
Likewise, my friend
I honestly could say neither midsommar movie nor viking tv series show Scandinavian culture accurately.
A beautiful tradition, I pray it continually is preserved throughout the decades my Scandinavian brothers!
Such a wonderful House you have , great woodwork , and layout !
I prefer European Pagan Celebrations over any other.
Yuletide Greetings! Good health to you and yours.
Disirblot that the state churches CANNOT obscure.
The entanglement of traditions is both strange (sometimes infuriating) and fascinating. I acknowledge the Catholic influence on the Lucia festivities, of course, but prefer to embrace the older tradition of celebrating the return of the light that the solstice brings. That is how it was taught to me, and that is what the custom truly represents in my view. I love the witchy connotations and associations with the rabble-rousing spirits, or the raucous host, if you will. Great video, all around, and in an appropriately fantastic setting, no less! Skål and god jul to you and yours! Til árs ok friðar!
The coming back of the light... I think it's a beautiful thing.
This feels beautiful to me.
Merry Yule
My family has just discovered we have Norwegian roots. Fascinating, we always loved your culture. What a beautiful video and how lucky we are today we have KZhead 🎄
Memories. In elementary school, we had a new classmate from Sweden, so our class dressed up and sang to celebrate with him!
Greetings from Greece! I came from Bjorn andreas Bull-Hansen's channel. I honestly admire your attachment and connection to your roots. Here in my country history is undermined and mocked when brought to the table of discussion's about each other's heritage and beginnings. But something tells me this thing is worldwide unfortunatelly. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for your kind words! Let's hope things change for the better soon. Skål
We've become apathetic to our own continued existence.
Santa Lucia is my Italian Nona's favourite song
Happy Yule !
What a beautiful home, full of culture!
Night before day!
The pagan traditions are always the most beautiful and meaningful !!! thank you for the new history lesson Sturla!!!
Thanks Sturla!
I'll drink a Yule beer myself now to your health. Skål! 🍻
Hail Nordr!!!!!
Til àrs ok friðar, happy yuletide :)
God Jule min venn.
Skål!
Happy🎄Xmas🎄Sturla🎄from UK 💚
Fascinating- also I love the carvings and ambience of the longhouse . The Viking ship type cup is also a little similar to the wassail bowl which is still used at this time of year ( in Scotland I think for sure )
Thank you for detailing the tale of Lussinatta! The Nils Bergslien painting is wonderful! What do you think is the origin of the Swedish Lussekatter ("Lucia cats") buns? Do you think the saffron color represents the sun's light and the spiral forms of the pastries are similar to the ancient solar symbol - instead of the more modern reference to the curve of a cat's tail? I really enjoy your history lessons - keep those videos coming, Sturla! God Jul! :)
Skål my brother.
Wonderful video
Always interesting video, thankyou
to to celebrate yule
God yule, Sturla!
Fantastic story telling.
Thank you for the video and the toast! Very kind of you, and the woodworking is beautiful.
Thank you for this enlightening and entertaining history lesson! Took me for a ride into my imagination. Happy celebrations. 🌲 🍰🕯️✨🥂

@4:53 Almost same in Dutch "Spoken rit"
Magickal.
Cheers
Very cool to learn about! Some very impressive wood work in that house! Cheers 🍻
We gotta talk about that beer-drinking. I am way into traditional farmhouse brewing AND viking age brews. So I will get you something more autentic next time. Har ikke bare tradisjonsøl fra Voss, Hornindal men også Stjørdalsøl, som er råøl som er brygget på tradisjonelt tørket malt! Ps. And x-mas time dont begin now, but Yule dose, and that even better! Skål!
Please send invitations;)
No hops in traditional Nordic brews. Cedar/juniper leaves and berries were common.
@@VikingStories Done! Shell do. Really. Hope to join one of your tours soon, eather Ringerike or something like that. So shall bring some then!
Beautiful home, beautiful tradition. God bless and merry Christmas
Yahweh bless
A great tradition!
Fin video! Fikk faktisk litt mer julestemning nå, hehe!
Excellent video!
I, too, would like to indulge in Pagan studies, even though I’m a Christian. Something about it just fascinates me
Check out G K Chesterton. He has very interesting views on how Christianity and Paganism relate to each other. He is a Catholic writer and views ancient Pagans as honest, spiritual people who were legitimately seeking truth. He obviously views the Catholic Church as ultimately correct, but does not see Pagans as the “enemy”.
Is that your house? Tour please! Beautiful!
Holy skit, is that your house?! Magnificent!

Great video. Your house is amazing!
Great, as always. (But the wikipedia link to the Santa lucyia's song doesn't work)
Thanks
Your hjem is beautiful.

love the woodwork in your house . Christianity just replaced our old beliefs with there's by grifting their places of worship on top of our ancestors places of worship
Just a reminder for all men watching this to lift weights, eat animal protein, save your money and find a based woman to continue the lineage. Greetings from a degenerate NYC
Can I differ with you? The "true" light of the world was born on Christmas Day and that was moved to within a few days of the pagan festival that occurred at the winter solstice. Since moving to Norway, my wife and I have commented often on the "Catholic" format of Church services ( although the people attending say they're Lutheran) and the celebrating Feast days on the evening prior. For example, the Christmas meal is served on the 24th, St Lucia Day is celebrated on the evening of the 13th ( St Lucia Day is 14th Dec). Just a bit more for thought - Jews celebrate the Sabbath on Saturday ( the last day of the week when God rested) but that it starts from sundown on Friday. Shows you how old the ritual is.
By all means, and thanks for your input. I made the video to show how pre-Christian traditions and ceremonies were blended in with Christianity, from a Germanic/Scandinavian perspective. Easter is another example, as it is connected with the ancient fertility Goddess Eostre.
There is only One who can drive away eternal darkness... and replace it with eternal Light... the One who Rose from the Dead... because He is God... Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” John 8:12 / "I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness". John 12:46 / "This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil". John 3:19 / For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ". 2 Corinthians 4:6
Sigh....you have much to learn
