A look at the World's Oldest Runestone

So yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting the new exhibition of the World's Oldest Runestone. Is it a magical inscription or just simple words? Is the other word really a dirty word for a vulva ( ᚠ ᚢ ᚦ ) and not the first three letters of the Futhark, and does this mean it's got something to do with fertility rituals?
I am no expert in runes, but I see with interest that Jackson Crawford points to the origin of the runes in the Greek (or mediated Greek) alphabet (link below). I agree with him that with this find, the Roman origin story certainly doesn't fit anymore. If that's correct, then it might be time to revive some new and pretty wild ideas which connect early Scandinvians with the Mycenaean Greece back in the Late Bronze Age. More on that later. So this is interesting, indeed. I hope you'll enjoy this trip around the exhibition!
I hope you all are well!

I will one day visit my ancient ancestors land and walk in the foot steps of those who came before me with honor. Thank you again Sturla your amazing brother.

  • Thank you for the tour of the viking exhibit and Svingerud stone at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo. What objects did you find most interesting? Per Krister Vasshus, University of Bergen, the research team will be releasing more information about the flatgrav and its contents, where the Svingerud stone was located, in March 2023! Exciting times! Takk, Sturla :)

  • That's really cool! That's interesting that Myceneans are possible contenders for sharing writing with vikings--that makes runes pretty old. I keep wondering if viking emphasis on poetry had a part on why writing didn't take off as quickly--with the sophistication of their poetry, they could already keep pretty complex records just through story-telling. I just finished a book called Algonquin Legends of New England--it's an old book and the author believes that the vikings may have imparted their legends on some American Indians. It's an interesting theory I haven't seen floated elsewhere.

  • Very nice to watch this new-found now oldest-known rune stone, which I heard a lot about in the last few weeks. There are beautiful other artifacts too! Thank you, Sturla! Personally, I find the Rök runestone such impressive because of the story it's telling us about the past in the Vendel era!

    • I don't know what it was like in the nineties . I visited on a few occasions between 2012-1018 , and it looks to be a huge improvement from those times.

  • I would love to visit that museum some day! Thanks for sharing it with us. By the way, I recently bought two books by Jackson Crawford: "The Saga of Volsungs" and "The Poetic Edda." Do you think this is a good place to start for learning about Norse mythology?

    @leipzigergnom@leipzigergnom Жыл бұрын
    • The Poetic Edda is viewed as the most important source on Norse mythology, so yes, definitively.

    • There are many ways to Scandinavia. Some Vikings thought they were descendants of the Greeks who lost at Troja and migrated eastwards to the Greek settlements in Crimea and Azov, according to some sources.
