A look at the World's Oldest Runestone
So yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting the new exhibition of the World's Oldest Runestone. Is it a magical inscription or just simple words? Is the other word really a dirty word for a vulva ( ᚠ ᚢ ᚦ ) and not the first three letters of the Futhark, and does this mean it's got something to do with fertility rituals?
I am no expert in runes, but I see with interest that Jackson Crawford points to the origin of the runes in the Greek (or mediated Greek) alphabet (link below). I agree with him that with this find, the Roman origin story certainly doesn't fit anymore. If that's correct, then it might be time to revive some new and pretty wild ideas which connect early Scandinvians with the Mycenaean Greece back in the Late Bronze Age. More on that later. So this is interesting, indeed. I hope you'll enjoy this trip around the exhibition!
I hope you all are well!

good to see you again
Thanks for this...good visuals to awaken the ancestral memories!
KZhead channel "Jackson Crawford" was talking with one of the reasercher about the runes on the stone. He promised there will be more surprises in a few month.
A cool-looking museum. Nice to see you back here Sturla.
I haven't been to Norway since 2018 when nothing from the Vikings or Iron Age was on display there. Hopefully I can return to Norway this year and see these treasures.
Thank you very much for sharing, appreciate it a LOT 👍 Greets from the Netherlands, T.
Good to see you too, Sturla!
Thanks Sturla!
I cannot express my incredible gratitude. I am unlikely to get to visit the museum. The next best thing is to tour it with you. Uurrrrgh... 🐻 🐻❄
So cool.
I love this!! Thank you sir Sturla
I cant believe how casually you walked past the Langeid sword. It is one of the beautiful viking age swords. Keep up the good work brother. Baldrik.
Our culture is so beautiful
💞 Thank You❣️ What A Treat❣️
Oh, just wonderful!! Thanks for sharing all of these fantastic artifacts. Wish I could see them in person 👍
The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh has a very impressive collection of Viking artifacts from when they came and put their iron and flesh swords into the male and female bellies, respectively.
Thank you so much Sturla ❣️ We’re all hearing so much about the new find- thank you for taking us inside the museum to catch a glimpse - awesome! Love the fantastic creatures and the top five🥰
I could spend many hour's sifting through all of these beautiful ancient artifacts and reading the information and just taking it all in. I will one day visit my ancient ancestors land and walk in the foot steps of those who came before me with honor. Thank you again Sturla your amazing brother.
👍🙂
Thank you for the tour of the viking exhibit and Svingerud stone at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo. What objects did you find most interesting? Per Krister Vasshus, University of Bergen, the research team will be releasing more information about the flatgrav and its contents, where the Svingerud stone was located, in March 2023! Exciting times! Takk, Sturla :)
My heart it pounds Be like the Bear
this is gangster
👍👍✌✌excellent
Awesome.....
That's really cool! That's interesting that Myceneans are possible contenders for sharing writing with vikings--that makes runes pretty old. I keep wondering if viking emphasis on poetry had a part on why writing didn't take off as quickly--with the sophistication of their poetry, they could already keep pretty complex records just through story-telling. I just finished a book called Algonquin Legends of New England--it's an old book and the author believes that the vikings may have imparted their legends on some American Indians. It's an interesting theory I haven't seen floated elsewhere.
Very nice to watch this new-found now oldest-known rune stone, which I heard a lot about in the last few weeks. There are beautiful other artifacts too! Thank you, Sturla! Personally, I find the Rök runestone such impressive because of the story it's telling us about the past in the Vendel era!
I very much agree, Carsten 👍🏻 All best
The museum rooms looks almost empty. I was there in the nineties and remember it as fantasic with loads of things to view. Museum stuff does not belong in the warehouse!
I don't know what it was like in the nineties . I visited on a few occasions between 2012-1018 , and it looks to be a huge improvement from those times.
I would love to visit that museum some day! Thanks for sharing it with us. By the way, I recently bought two books by Jackson Crawford: "The Saga of Volsungs" and "The Poetic Edda." Do you think this is a good place to start for learning about Norse mythology?
The Poetic Edda is viewed as the most important source on Norse mythology, so yes, definitively.
Thanks for the video tour 🙂 Have any Classical Greek or Roman academics given their opinion on the new find?
Not that I have seen..
There had to be a rune found in Scandinavia that out dates the rest. Maybe more exploration of the north west of Norway is needed.
I agree
A fascinating 'Ancient World' problem! 🙂Are you thinking an origin closer to Pythagoras and the 'Hyperborean' priest Abaris?
There are many ways to Scandinavia. Some Vikings thought they were descendants of the Greeks who lost at Troja and migrated eastwards to the Greek settlements in Crimea and Azov, according to some sources.
Thank you , many museums in America have roped off sections with Viking heritage, as in America ,certain groups say it is white supremacist. I am glad to see some art and history .
Will be in Denmark in April! Any good places I should visit?
Legoland?
@@elbuggo xD
Ribe and Roskilde are great places to look in our Viking past!
@@carstenchristiansen2256 That's the kind of thing I was looking for. Thank you!
What about the other runes that follow the 8 directly? They are clearly visible
Hi Sturla, may I ask for your expertise regarding the runes? I'm looking for a tattoo to symbolise my late father, is there a particular Rune that covers this or multiple Runes? Any advice would be very much appreciated!! Thank you and love your channel!!
Not sure. I'm not a specialist in runes..
Thank you for posting this my friend!
