Did Vikings use reindeer skin as armour?
This week I had the great pleasure of being invited up to Sami people in the area of Tromsø up north in Norway. They wanted to show me some of their way of life, tradition and mindset, both spiritual and cultural. The symbiosis of Vikings and Sami in the north during the Viking is visible in the tales of Kveldulf Bjalfason, father of Skalla-Grímr and a great Icelandic clan, who was a great berserker/ulfhéðinn and shape-shifter. And many others who were half trolls, meaning related to Sami up north. Kveldulf's grandfather was Ulf the Brave, who also was the grandfather of Kjetil Høng (see last week's video). I personally enjoyed testing out the Pesk which was used as armour, which many Vikings became renowned for!

Love seeing the reindeer, thanks so much for this peek at Sami culture 🥰
Love to seeing my lunch herding... Yummy😋😎
Looking forward to seeing you test that deer pelt armor against Viking swords and axes
Me too actually
And in Sweden SVT make a program on Swedish history, and for the WHG they have a black African actor to play our ancestors. Its fuck how they will do everything to destroy our legacy and history
Sturla, Just amazing as I watch all of your videos to stumble upon “Vikings and the Sicilian Mafia” .. just what I needed to see. You just confirmed what I have been telling my family for years. Scandinavian blood 🩸 in me. Thank you!! I have been searching for this kind of information for YEARS.
My pleasure 🙏🏻 Thanks
@@VikingStories you are very welcome!
The song at the end was used on a kids show about a Sami boy I used to watch in England in the early 1970s. I haven't heard it in over 50 years and it brought back really lovely memories. Surprisingly I remembered the words and sang along with it.
Very interesting seeing how the old ways blend with the modern ways in the far north! Thanks Strula.
Horse culture tribes (Plains Indians) made formidable shields with green (fresh wet) buffalo hide. The wet hide was suspended over a low fire. The skyward side was smeared with hide glue. As the heat drove moisture from the hide and glue, the hide contracted and thickened. They were tough enough to stop an arrow and most pistol ball.
Interesting, thank you for sharing.
Tore Hund had a skin armor that no sharp Steel could penetrate, wonder what skin it was. He killed Olav Haraldsson/the holy.
Thanks for this one.
That was a great. We all love our viking forebears, but it is good to see the Sami peoples of the far north now getting the respect they deserve. Hope your book will be published in English later, my Norsk isn't so good! Thanks.
Beautiful
Such a fascinating video, thank you, Sturla. ❤
Sturla, did you forget that Tore Hund who killed Olav Digre during the battle of Stiklestad, was wearing a shirt to battle made from reindeer skin which was gifted to him by the Samis? His shirt was enchanted with magical protection abilites, as the Samis/Finns were renowned for their skill in sorcery during the viking age. So, yes according to the historical sources, Vikings did use reindeer skin as armour, but how common it was is what remains unknown.
Thanks Sturla! Very informative.❤
Great work.
So glad I came across your channel, excellent content! I watched your video on the importance of gene's, and I couldn't agree more with your views on this, I'm from shetland and hope to have a talk with you sometime!! Keep up the videos excited to see more. 🇳🇴
SUPER experience, Sturla! What a GREAT place to visit! Interesting to see the harnessed reindeer just standing quietly while attached to the sleighs. Are they tethered? Or free standing? You will need to purchase a reindeer pesk to strut around the forest back home this winter! Tusen takk for denne videoen! 🤗
Veldig koselig. 🔥
Thank you, Sturla! Definitely enjoyed the video. I hope you have a great weekend.

Nice friday with content creators, may they all be seeds on this day. A blue dot by Sturlas channel is always appreciated =) Thank you, have a nice weekend!
Interestingly enough, your eyes look blue in the snow, but green by the sea?
True:)
In urban America, women might smear their faces with petroleum jelly, so other women's fingernails will slide off. Protecting oneself does not have to mean armor.
try that against a knife , you silly man.
@@Starburst7641 First, I am a woman. Second this is a different culture. Knives are rare in street fights. Third, the point was simply that, ahem, armor is not always required.
The Sami interaction seems to have been friendly, like a cooperation, while on all other edges of the germanic lands there was aggressions and war first with haplogroup G, then later with R1b the romans and also R1a the slavics!! How could it be possible that the Sami were not part of the roman slavic aggressions?? Would be interesting to know how they achieved inserting that much N1c1 genetics into the finish people, by force or only natural developments??
