Viking Armor

Finally I took some time to show my updated Viking armor and clothing in better detail. The last "Viking armor" video I made has many mistakes in terms of realism and historical accuracy. I have fixed some of these issues and this is my current setup for reenactment. If you have any questions let me know. Comment, subscribe, and thanks for watching.

    • From what I've heard these types of shows do have consultants for these things, they just choose to ignore what they want. TV shows don't want to look accurate, that's a documentary. They want to look "good" and believable enough to the audience while having a splash of reality thrown into it. And from what I've gathered it's a lot easier to frame an actor's face at every angle if they're wearing neutral dark colors and things that don't get in the way of the cameras, such as shields.

    • The fun thing is how you can see historical accuracy degrade over time, for an example as much as I find Skyrim to be "meh" the Hold guards and Stormcloaks wear what looks to a layman like me pretty accurate Viking-inspired armor. Yet in AC: Valhalla iirc they seem to wear the shitty leather tunic / literal medieval biker jacket that's prevalent in TV media, and this fuckin kills me dude. The only thing that I hate more is when a show or game sprouts the usual "hurr durr moving in armor hard" bullshit, which even most people who don't know a lot about armor know is bullshit: if the armor was so constricting, why was it used? BECAUSE IT WASN'T CONSTRICTING YOU IDIOTS

  • For those of you who compare "Vikings" to real Vikings. Show was about characters. Huge part about character is face. When they are in battle it adds more depth to it when you see emotions etc. If everyone had helmet, noone knew who is Ragnar, Rolo, Lagertha etc in battle... And also it would be challenging to create audio if everyone was in armor etc. There are many aspects into filmmaking.

      @thrownswordpommel7393@thrownswordpommel73933 жыл бұрын
    • @@thrownswordpommel7393 yes in large scale. But i am speaking about individuals. Also it reinforce feeling of bravery, strenght,... when you see some muscles and notice how enemies were portrayed. They had helmets, similar uniforms, same colors, they were in general smaller and they looked weaker and scared. What's better way to show primal dominance than staring and showing teeths in anger while face is covered in blood? Also fighting is portrayed very hollywoodish, if they would fight historically correct in shieldwalls in slow pace it would be boring and not interesting for major audience. After all it was created for business and entertainment considering major audience knows nothing about history and knows only popculture stereotypes

Since you asked for feedback, just some minor stuff: Gjermundbu-Helm did not have an aventail all around, the occular was free of mail (such kind of aventail is vendel period). Very long belts are a reenactorism, there is no evidence for them. If you stick the scabbard into a waist belt, it does not flop around so much, especially between the legs.

Also it is very uncomfortable, imagine walking in a crowded street with that thing. More accurate would be a Scabbard hanging straight down from your belt. it was either a kind of clip on it to connect it to the belt or there was a loop on the scabbard your belt goes in, like on modern jeans. I hope this helps for research. I really like the socks and your woven belt! keep it going and sorry für my bad english! :D
