13th Century Teutonic Knight Armor

This is my armor kit based on what a Teutonic Knight may have looked like during the year 1300. Recent additions include tailored sleeves, maille chausses, padded hose, arming girdle, wool mantle, and a closed gambeson. I still have a couple improvements to make but I think as a whole it looks good for the time being. Comment, subscribe, and thanks for watching!

  • *ATTENTION* I'm quite aware that the lack of period foot coverings inside leather boots is an issue. I need to make woolen hosen with the feet covered to correct this. I didn't have the time to make them for this video as it was made in a bit of a rush so for the next one I'll have this mistake corrected. Thanks!

    • @@MikeWhiskyTango They get it right every once in awhile - I mean the armor and weaponry used in the Lord of the Rings trilogy was realistic (the armor and weapons used by the Men, Elves, and Dwarves I should say). So they don't fail in the presentation of armor and weaponry so often as they fail in the usage - like swords cutting through armor as if it's just there for aesthetics. The wildly charging cavalry thing isn't as bad as Hollywood's love for raining arrows (because for some reason they figure in a country full of gun enthusiasts that no one knows how projectile weapons work). My big question is - why Japan was mentioned; I mean if it's about anime, isn't the whole point of anime to be super unrealistic?

      @Isnogood12@Isnogood122 жыл бұрын
    • well remember to balance realism with fun, it's why some video games streamline some aspects of gameplay, for example, despite the fact that red dead 2 needs you to clean your gun to keep it from degrading, it doesn't ask you to take a good 5 minutes to sit down and wipe clean a single handgun, instead it just asks you to make sure you carry some gun oil and check on your gun once in a while. while it's more realistic that CSGO, it going over the top will eventually staying boring some audiences

      @theshadowthie1@theshadowthie12 жыл бұрын
    • @@theshadowthie1 sure, but not cleaning a blackpowder handgun means it blows up if you keep using it or utterly fails, so having it so you HAVE to clean it is fine and keep immersion for people with enough brain cells to know how firearms work. I don't expect everyone to wear well researched perfectly fitted armor they had fitted for themselves out of the exact time period the games tech level is set in, but similarly you can't just take off your chain armor, fold it in your bag, go to the bar for drinks and then pop it on real quick when a brawl breaks out like superman changing in a back ally.

      @Dies1r4e@Dies1r4e2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Dies1r4e no, but again, like I said, too much of something can't be a good thing, it'd make sense for a surprise encounter to not allow you to equip your armor for the fight if you're in a tavern or some play where you're more relaxed, but sometimes bending immersion for the sake of adding dynamic mechanics came make the game more fun! for example, maybe allowing an option where if the party focuses on defending their tank for a turn or two to give him the opportunity to get properly equipped, which adds more tactics for the party to consider, since if they can do that for the tank, then the tank can do the same thing for them, so weighing the option to defend and absorb attacks for the sake of getting properly armed becomes something to consider

  • Nice. Your gear has come a long way from what you had 5 years ago. Historical accuracy wise, I can't see a single flaw in the armour (though I'm not certain if that type of shoe was around in the 13th century, but I know way less about medieval clothes than I do armour, so I might be wrong). You've clearly learned way more about the armour of the period over the years. The only improvements I think could be made are just additions like a knightly dagger and some cosmetic options. But as far as what you have got. It all fits the 13th century style you're going for. No obvious anachronism. Great work man. Love it.

    • TeutonicPenguin great job! i was woundering if you could answer some questions? first, i noticed a lot of mail coifs of this time usually go above the chin, not bellow them. was this technique also period acurate? second, a lot of the effigies i have seen seem to have the mail trace the thinning shape as the arm connects to the wrist. would the underlying gambison, and therefor the mail also be so personally tailored that this look would have been real? , i was woundering in your opinion, why didnt knights were some more solid armor like lamillar over their chainmail like you shown in your verangian armor video? was mail just considered enough? and going off this point. during this period would the individual pieces of mail be different sizes depending on the part of the body? like would heavier rings or a sturdier construction be used on the chest to protect it more than the arms and provide a more rigged defense?

      @midshipman8654@midshipman86543 жыл бұрын
    • Jackson Almodobar 1. Yes, the mail coif should go over the chin to protect the throat. Sometimes it even went over the mouth 2. If a knight could afford it, he’d have his mail tailored to fit his body 3. They wore coat of plates the 13th-14th centuries, over their mail armor

      @KristinkaAranova@KristinkaAranova3 жыл бұрын
    • Svetlana Kuznetkova thank you for your responce! on number 2. most illustrations of knights from this period, both modern renditions in textbooks and period ones, seem to have the mail to almost be form fitting. so much so that you can see the tapering of the forarm from the elbow to the wrist, and even the calf of the leg! i would assume these dimensions would be hard to replicate. 3. i was specifically refering to the time before the coat of plates, from about the 11th to the early 13th century. seems odd that such heavily armed heavy cavalry would only use mail durring this time when solid protection like lamilar was possible to put over it. i assume there had to be something about european maile construction that would make them intentionally forgo added protection. I do know that it was very affective against muslim archers during the early crusades.

    • @@spades9681 In a time where sieges prevailed, with much difference, than battles, deducing that these armors were made only to go on a horse is not having much idea of what is being talked about. I can buy you that argument if we are talking about a later time, when plate armor was fully developed (XV century) and some suit of armors was made exclusively for participating in tournaments on a horse. Extremely heavy armor made solely to protect against the clash of spears in jousting and tournaments that were not intended for fighting on foot.

      @pulsarplay5808@pulsarplay5808 Жыл бұрын
    • @@pulsarplay5808 Of course they weren’t made solely for use on horseback, all I meant is that almost every unique facet of the high medieval knight’s armor arose from mounted use (face protection, rider’s stitch, coat/pair-of-plates, etc.). The knight of this period was principally mounted, and this did not always mean pitched battles full of cavalry charges and the like, but also small skirmishes, including during a siege. Because sieges, as I’m sure you know, were more attrition than actual combat, and what combat did take place was not restricted to a charge on foot on top of siege engines and ladders, but also skirmishes outside the walls. But yes, my calling it irrelevant was misplaced, because foot combat in this configuration did occur, and yes, I’m sure you’d have to pull back after only a little bit of actual fighting.
