The return of the "Bullitt" Mustang

2018 ж. 21 Сәу.

Mark Strassmann reports on the journey of the car that starred in the Steve McQueen classic, "Bullitt," and the owners who jealously protected their prize, even refusing to sell the car to McQueen himself. Strassmann also talks with McQueen's costar Jacqueline Bisset about the very special appeal that the Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback had (and continues to have) on movie audiences.

  • This was the car that played in the enormous skyrocketing of mustang sales in last 1960’s. It’s a sad truth that today’s generation doesn’t even know that bullitt is a thing. This got me hooked on American muscle cars. Every movie car chase, from fast and furious to Jason Bourne, was just a descendant to the bullitt mustang chase. This car may be 51 years old, but it will never get too old or ancient to watch the greatest car chase ever filmed with the legendary Steve McQueen.

Seeing this reminds me of how clean a design that year was. I traded it to a friend of mine for his 71 Z28. Those were the two cars that I absolutely should have kept. Total investment at the time was 3850 dollars. Neither had over 70,000 miles. Ok, I've talked it out. I'll just stare at the ceiling for awhile and you can go on with your business.

This appeals to car collectors and cinema collectors. James Bond's Austin Martin sold for like 4.6 million. One was the stunt car, the other was used for the "hero" shots. The one at Mecum was the hero car. The stunt car was also recently found at a scrapyard in Mexico. Finally, I read an article somewhere where what they believe is the surviving Charger ( there were two of those also apparently ) was also found. Does that clear everything up for the doubters?

  • I think it's feels right to keep the car within the family. I mean, if they had sold the car for McQueen we'd probably never have the chance to see it again, or it would be restored and would lose it's scratches from the movie. What we're seeing now, it's history, it's raw and it's a piece of art saved as it is.

It had the 326 High Output (HO) engine which consisted of higher compression, a 4 barrel carb and dual exhaust and a 3 on the floor. A good friend of mine then shortly after I bought my car bought a '68 GT Mustang, highlands green with the 390 4 barrel engine...it was literally a duplicate of the Bullitt car, but back then nobody thought anything about it as the car had not yet become an icon. Btw the '68 390 was pretty much a dog engine as the only time we raced I beat him pretty convincingly with my little 326 LeMans

  • I really question the authenticity of this car. For one thing, did anyone bother to check the VIN#’s with Ford when it was originally purchased? I know there were something like 4-5 Mustangs used in the film, all but one were wrecked and the remaining one was sold to a secretary at Warner Brothers. So how did this car end up in the classified listings of a car magazine years later, and with the films’ title misspelled too?? Shouldn’t that be a clue it might not be authentic??

  • I had Mrs. Kiernan for third grade, and remember her parking that car in the school driveway every day. I seem to remember some kid taking a spill on the ice and falling against it with his metal lunchbox clasps catching on the car, spilling it open, the matching thermos ricocheting off the car with a thud, and rolling down the lane. The kid got up, collected his sandwich, Twinkie, and thermos, off the ice, and no one thought anything of it, not even Mrs. Kiernan, who had been promptly informed by a tattle-tale. I'm sure it took more than a hit or two from kickballs and street hockey pucks too. There were definitely other cars parked along there whose consequences would have been much more dire, believe me. $6K must have been really big coin to spend on a used car in those days! She used to definitely indulge in Irish purple rage now and then, but I don't recall concern about the car ever being the source of it.

But those are the only two I saw during filming. I grew up in Santa Clara, California...spent a lot of time in San Francisco after graduating from high school.
