The Mustang that Steve McQueen drove in the classic 1968 movie "Bullitt" became a legend, especially after it disappeared for decades. Now, it’s resurfaced and is up for auction. Mark Strassmann reports that the car is expected to go for millions.

This scene made the movie and has existed in my mind as the best car chase in movie history, wheel hop, no positive traction ,smoke machines and all love the action and the sound of that 390 Ford!

Bullet was the first movie that had a real chase scene on the streets. Every chase scene before Bullet was done on a sound stage or studio back lot.

Came back from overseas in 69 to find my brother in law sitting in one of those things....390 with a Holley four barrel that looked like a shoebox....4 speed Hurst with the T grip.....scared me senseless in that car...
Right at 1:56 McQueen drives past my apartment, the yellow building on the right, I'll bet I've replayed that scene a hundred times. Amazing that that car was bought for just $3500!

I cannot believe that it was driven and was parked in a Garage for 35 years right here in New Jersey. I have owned two BB Pony cars, a 1970 SS 396 camaro L-78 and a 1970 SS 396 Camaro L-34. Both had headers and were over 400 HP. But I have always loved the 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks with either the 390 High performance or 428 Cobra jet engines.

Teresa Garsia the remake from 1999 or the original one from 1974? The real Eleanor was a yellow 73 Mach 1 351 Cleveland 4V mustang. If you ever seen the original movie and know of the tragedy of the director, his past and what it took and costed him to make and release that movie, and everything that one car went through, you will know why that one was the real Eleanor.

Don't get me wrong, the Bullitt Mustang is one cool car. It has definitely earned a premium over other 1968 Mustang GTs that are still extant, those that lived out their lives from the Ford dealership with less...prominence...I suppose. However, should that premium really be in excess of $3 million USD? I have a hard time reconciling that.
