CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Bullitt (Steve McQueen) refuses to back down when the Charger trying to follow him takes it up a notch, leading to a chase through the streets of San Francisco.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In one of his most famous roles, Steve McQueen stars as tough-guy police detective Frank Bullitt. The story begins with Bullitt assigned to a seemingly routine detail, protecting mafia informant Johnny Ross (Pat Renella), who is scheduled to testify against his Mob cronies before a Senate subcommittee in San Francisco. But when a pair of hitmen ambush their secret location, fatally wounding Ross, things don't add up for Bullitt, so he decides to investigate the case on his own. Unfortunately for him, ambitious senator Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn), the head of the aforementioned subcommittee, wants to shut his investigation down, hindering Bullitt's plan to not only bring the killers to justice but discover who leaked the location of the hideout.

    • I think CGI is a useful tool in modern movies to touch up scenes in small ways, but it can be overused in a movie trying to look hyperrealistic and end up looking cheesy or goofy in the end.

    • Actually, this was duplicated...by Ford Motor Company. They took this video and turned it into a commercial for a small Ford sporty car. Basically, they digitally " dropped " Steve McQueen into the driver's seat of a car sold in Europe, the Ford Puma, and digitally replaced the Mustang we see here with the Ford Puma. I wouldn't be surprised if the video would be on KZhead somewhere.

However, I often wondered if something had been done with the engine to make it that fast, because after I sold it a few years later, I (of course) wanted it back (because my father had talked me into buying a 1974 Vega, which outright sucked), so every time a 2-door Galaxie appeared in the paper for sale with the 390, I went and looked at them, and none of them were nearly that fast. Possibly because they were usually automatics, or possibly because of other factors, such as gear ratios, etc. I really miss that car. 10 mpg city and 15 hwy., but gas was cheap.

The ability to communicate through a glance here and there; a pause used to accentuate an already dramatic scene; he was an exemplary actor, a master of his craft. Mr Mcqueen, thank you for allowing us, your audience, to enjoy your artistic excellence. We salute you.

  • One of the best car chases on film. Certainly the best up to that time. Yes they undercranked lots of it, the Charger loses multiple wheel covers and they pass the same cars multiple times but this chase did a great job of putting the viewer in the action. It changed movie and TV car chases from that point on

    • I'm sure when it was filmed it just looked like any other street in America. But now specific classics stand out. They passed the same white 67/68 Firebird about 4 times. I'm not complaining, def my favorite muscle car, but it was noticeable. Just nice to see a chase without 50 cuts between unnecessary shifting, feet on pedals, skidding tires ... they just drove em like they stole em.

No CGI, the cars are REAL Manual Transmission Cars (not the cars with the "paddle shifting" Bullsh!t), and legendary Stunt Drivers including Steve McQueen himself.

    • I don't understand why this chase is still being regarded as the best ever? Yeah, Steve McCqueen is cool and yes, the cars are cool. But the filming and editing is rather low budget to a point where it becomes almost ridiculous by today's standards. Like, for example, shooting the same scene from different angles hoping that no one would notice :-)

      @sylla2@sylla26 жыл бұрын
    • The chase is so famous because it was the fastest and bravest chase ever filmed back in 1968, and there were very little of film makers that ever attempted to make another chase like this. Also ,the chase is still impressive in comparision to other movie chases for some people because it features real, well executed sports driving while other filmmakers heavily rely on editing and actually slow driving, with a few low speed easy tricks such as handbrake turns (if any). As a rally fan and a person who took part in a few rallies as a competitor, I find this chase much more interesting than most of other chases ever filmed. I think only the 1970ties Vanishing Point and The Burglars (with Belmondo) hold the same level. Other chases are either slower, unrealistic or overedited (or, amazingly, altogether same time).

  • I was 14 years old when this came out and I saw it with my cousin. The manager let us in even though we were too young for a R rated film. The scene where the guy was shot with a 12 gauge shotgun shocked me and I still see it in my dreams. The car chase was totally new than. There had never been a movie that showed this much realism and it simply blew away how movies would be filmed in the future. Watching this today is as fresh as the day it came out.
