    • It’s not really that simple. That’s basically what everyone does. However, the outcome is entirely dependent on the sound engineer actually mixing it properly. I have seen wayyyyyyy more terrible sound engineers than decent ones. They should just have either one vocal track with the background vocals playing at almost exactly the same volume(or slightly lower), or all vocal tracks playing at a lower volume & live vocals at about 6db. Most songs have a low & high vocal track going at the same time. I feel like most of these are either tv shows forcing them to lip sync(like top of the pops used to do), or they just have bad sound engineers. None beside Ashley Simpson actually seem like they were really ‚lip syncing‘. The AFL show did, but they probably forced that one on top of giving her a horrible engineer lmao They don’t play backing tracks to trick people, they do it to make it sound better. Just like recording an album isn’t tricking people, just making it sound better.

If you are paying to see a singer, and all you get Is a flashy performance with a completely pre-recorded set list, including the singers own voice, then you are better off saving your money and buying their album to listen to. If it's the whole "live vibe" you're going to try to use as an excuse to further justify the use of lip-synching, you're still better off saving money and seeing a knockoff singer, band, or group. • Its different. The whole approach is different. Pop artists are too visual, usually represented by gorgeous women who need to keep up with their appearance. No sweating, no ugly makeup, no bad hair, pure perfection. Use Britney as an example - she was always an amazing dancer with the perfect barbie doll face and figure. In order to keep that perfect image, live singing couldn't happen. It would fail her with all the dancing and props. Rock bands, on the other hand, don't have this immense visual pressure. They come out the way they wish to look, sweat, spit, yell, scream, use their vocals as much as they wish, and the audience and the world praise them for it. I’m mostly peeved at the fact that Kelly has been in this business for almost 20 years and still somehow, I still feel like she has to prove herself in ways that artists like Beyoncé don’t, even though both women’s talent is undeniable. Beyoncé’s performance was the one most talked about that day even though Kelly sang too and sang live. But yet she still has to fight for her popularity and her credit and it’s just baffling to me that she’s not held to the caliber of other artists when she can sing circles around every female and male artist in music and stand tall among the real talents like Beyoncé. Beyoncé, Kelly, pink, Adele are the extremely small percentage of artists whose names and voices and talent time will not forget but yet, Kelly is not treated that way. • @@yannickamoa1665 And that’s my big problem with music today. I hate to sound like the grumpy old guy but it’s true. Popularity has always played a part in music but I feel like talent was still a 100% must for the most part even back in the 90’s, talent was still strong. But now, actual talent has all been eliminated from what a singer should have and is more based now on how your social media following is. Anyone can be a “singer” now and they do, but they are far off from the likes of Kelly and Beyoncé. Beyoncé has been doing it longer so I can see your point about her knowing how to control her image better. But Kelly came about at a time when social media was really starting to take off and become the juggernaut that it is now, so she knows how to manage her image. I think the real problem lies with the public’s taste in music. And for some reason, they don’t appreciate Kelly that much. But it’s the luck of the draw I guess. But I believe that time will be both of these artist’s friends, and their voices will be enjoyed for generations to come. Can’t say the same about a lot of other artists though.

I actually like them not being 100% consistent as it makes every performance special My 2 favorite recordings of live performances ever have some screw ups in them They are the video of Grace Vanderwaal getting the golden buzzer at americas got talent, and a very specific recording of a showing of Symphonic evolutions, the pokemon symphony show Hear me out In the golden buzzer video this little 14 year old with her ukele sings the song she wrote, she laughs when she hears people start to cheer and her voice cracks here or there. Even simon cowell said "but thats what makes you perfect" and that he believed shed be tbe next taylor swift. Its this beautiful, genuine moment of this persons life that changed the world for her. And no sob story required either, just a girl and her ukelele. My family never Ever watched that show. That year we all watched it, every episode from that point on. And we havent watched it since, either. The 2nd sadly is no longer on youtube, it was taken down for copyright reasons. But by god it brought me to tears first time i heard it. Its the final section of the show and the orchestra plays the original Pokemon anime theme song, with a woman singing it and the crowd is encouraged to sing along This song has maybe Thousands of people singing along to it in this recording, and theres this one moment that is pure magic. The singer actually messed up the order of the lyrics and you hear her stop as she realizes that the crowd of people dont miss a beat and sing the song Exactly, beat for beat word for word. And the singer laughs as she realizes that all her practice for this show dont match up to the love these people had for it. It wasnt even a main part of the song- it was an extended portion! One youd never hear while listening to the show. It was this magical moment of a crowd of thousands making it so...perfect. and unique. Listening to a recording of the same singer without that crowd doing the same song, where she doesnt mess up....it doesnt compare. I dont care if i see someone live and they dont sound exactly the same. Because if they just play the same thing i can hear at home, we miss the magic of the moment

  • #1 Admitting the wrong BACKING TRACK got played might have saved Ashlee’s career. There’s no way she was planning on lip-synching to the track you hear in the background. The track’s vocals were too quiet and hollow/flat sounding. But instead of admitting that and explaining that backing tracks are often used for the same reason as backup singers. So their live vocals will sound fuller, more polished, and much more like the album version, in all her post SNL interviews/statements. I still can’t understand why she instead chose to start coming up with excuses for why she’d been “forced”to lip-sync? Especially considering, a.) She wasn’t going to lip-sync that day in the first place. b.) Admitting to lip-syncing was a 100x worse than the truth. c.) The truth wasn’t nearly as complicated as the lies. Thus wouldn’t have been that difficult for people to believe or understand if they’d simply played the clip a couple times as she explained about backing tracks and why/when artists use them, during all those interviews she did! Why choose a complicated lie instead? And even go so far as to film fake scenarios for her reality show in an attempt to retroactively back up and expand on said lies? Especially when expanding on the TRUTH, since she likely had REAL footage to back it up, could’ve helped to convince any of the people who might not have found the interviews to be enough. (The imaginary interviews were she’d told the truth.) Particularly when considering that even back then most singers, but Pop singers especially, were already widely known for using them all the time. Especially while on tour. With the majority not even trying to hide or act ashamed, of it. They were still performing live vocals. And if used properly and/or sparingly, basically produced the same effect and was used for the same purpose, as having backup singers singing along with you. I can understand how that “Her band played the wrong song,” bullsh*t could’ve come about that night. Too much stress and so little time. But they didn’t have the same excuse for everything that happened in the days that followed.

  • 15:00 also a lot of the reason winter outdoor performances in the northern US are lip-synced is because the cold temperatures outside unfortunately dont allow for as much vocal control due to that. Just listen to adina mendles performace of Let It Go on new years eve in nyc. She couldnt hit the high note and cracked very very badly when normally, that's a note she hits flawlessly every time. I could also understand that lack of rehearsal time would create a lack in confidence. This is for lip-sync fails, not legitimate reasons for using a vocal track. They do it it kpop all the time because the choreo is very dance intensive but they do try to live sing of course. The use of backing tracks in kpop is mainly for if they need to breathe during in opportune times during each members portion. Usually only rappers go without backing tracks because if they're even a beat off, it sounds like a bunch of jibberish with a backing track. You'll find that songs with lesser intense choreo in kpop will always be live or portions with high notes or adlibs

  • Ashlee really lip sync that night, but it’s also true that the band (or someone) played the wrong song. Because she already performed Pieces of Me.

  • You put any hardcore fan onstage with the mic, they will lip sync all the songs to perfection. Too bad the artists can't do that to their own songs.

  • I'd like to share my own experience with 'lip-syncing'. I wasn't lip syncing at first but I still struggled through with my asthma being triggered because I had to sing while I danced. I was singing and dancing live to the then new song Carameldancing in English but I ended up singing louder than I meant to because I had to sing over the music itself. So it was very difficult for me to both sing over the music itself AND dance along while using the EXACT SAME voice I had used for the song itself! For me lip syncing may have been a good idea so my voice could have been heard over the background music itself but instead I ended up singing and dancing throughout the whole entire thing my voice being completely horced after words when a few fans wanted to greet me. This was back when the song first came out and I already looked like the blonde one except so much shorter and so much younger. Towards the end of the song during a breif break I even said into the mic "Isn't this song about over yet!?" I wasn't wearing a mask over my face it was my real actual face but I don't think it can be found on KZhead or anywhere else online.
