What is it like to drive a race car in a door to door endurance race? Well in this video I show you our 24hours of Lemons e46 BMW and our team's first time on the race track. After installing a fire suppression system, battery cutoff switch, roll cage, and containment racing seat with a full 6pt harness, we are ready to race... Well, so we thought... What we expected to be a weekend of racing ended up being a weekend of swapping a blown motor with a new junkyard motor into the race car.

    • Every race has a minimum of 5-6 teams that swap engines (we have done it before). We would know, our engine hoist is normally loaned out from 9 PM Friday (after test and tune) to about 9 AM Sunday and not just to one team. It is a rite of passage in this series. We have gotten to the point we normally have "basic" repairs but have done more trans swaps than engine.

    • I've only been in desperate slugfests with events a few times, but I know just how hard it is to slog on when everything is in ruins. Excitement, dashed hopes and fatigue are a very heavy burden. We all look from face to face hoping to see some spark. In my experience different people hit their limit at different times and the ones who are still on their feet inspire the ones who are lying on the rocks to get back up.

  • I've lost track of the number of times I've been on a team that's given up when we hit a huge snag at the final hour. I've always wanted to press on, but I was always outnumbered. It's nice to see you had a team of people that pushed on to the very end, even when failure was the guaranteed result. Very rare to see.

  • Super excited for this video! My first lemons race resulted in a blown up engine in a BMW as well, we had a spare motor with us and got it swapped out. This actually led to quite a few changes to the car including converting the front clip to a quick disconnect where we can remove it and pull the engine faster. We also converted our exhaust to just a few rubber hangers and straight steel. We can drop the exhaust with power tools within about 30 seconds of getting the car in the air. These don't sound like much but laying on the asphalt in the pits they're a huge quality of life improvement. Glad to welcome some new folks to the Lemons experience!

  • Any landing you can walk away from is a good one! I know you guys were disappointed, but this was you're very first attempt. You learned a great deal about pre-race preparation, know some tweaks to do (e.g., mirrors) to the car, and when you had a problem you all stuck together, worked the issue, and did your utmost. None of you are quitters, none of you were hurt, and you have a great story to tell in years to come. I think you guys did an amazing job. Don't consider this a failure. Consider this your first day at school, and the beginning of learning the ropes. My best to you all! :)

  • As soon as I heard engine swap, I knew it wasn't going to be quick, I've done the same thing with my e39 going from an m52tu to an m54, and yes it might've taken only 15 hours of work, but it was constant work figuring out everything with these engines. The worst part from my own experience was putting the engine in, and completely forgetting to swap over the old oil pan (D'oh!)! My donor engine was from a z4 and obviously, the pans were different, but I, just as your team, was very tired, and just wanted to finish the project. Good luck next year, hope to see you all in the parade! Don't forget to swap out VANOS seals and the DISA valve!

  • Great job! Just next year take a spare 'tested' engine with transmission with you(full kit). Swapping it in and driving few hundred km so you know it runs perfect then swapping the 'main' engine back in as a team. So in a race day if it goes like it went, you already have the specific engine knowledge, where everything goes and you will be ready for quick swap...maybe of course not F1 speed swap, but... a reasonable swap so you could enjoy the event for what you where prepping and waiting. Of course you cannot bring every spare part as it ia a old car and everything can brake when you push it, but you should take some crucial parts like cv axles, joints, brake pads and discs etc. So if something breaks you are ready to replace and not to rush to a scrap where you take a part that can fit theoretically, but as it was in your case it cannot be done - at least in the given race timeline. To bad that it went like this in just lap 12, but i hope to see better results next year! Great video! High five from Latvia! Stay safe.

  • This video gave me major nostalgia the one time I did Lemons years back. It was the first time I ever did wheel to wheel and it was amazing. I wish I could do it again but it really wasn't cheap. We did manage to beat the roadkill team in a Humber super snipe though Your video definitely encompasses some of the trouble you run into often dealing with these cars. A good taste of racing by spending a ton of money only to spend all the time trying to repair.
