Months of research in a single video. You did a top notch job. I'm sure a lot of guys will go ahead from here to build their own sound machines.
That would be great. We need more of them!
@@maisteer Darf ich fragen, was Du beruflich treibst? Auch als Fahrzeugtechnik Ing. selten so tiefe Recherche zu dem Thema gesehen. Daumen hoch! Top Video, technisch interessant und kurzweiliges editing. Viel Erfolg beim Bau!
@@DerSnipOr Thank you so much. I'm not an engineer, I just like tinkering ^_^'
Exactly tought the same! I learned so much because of this video. Now i want 6 into 1 headers on my e46 😁
Bull ox
The sound is worth the work.
Yes, I totally agree. And I hope I can make another video about it soon.
absolutetly
I doubt you'd really say that if you were paying for it! Especially when you consider that your car will probably be slower after spending all that money. Manufacturers these days to go great lengths to design exhaust systems with multiple parallel turbos and twin scroll turbos because splitting the headers prevents pressure waves from stacking and increasing exhaust backpressure which costs you efficiency and power. Besides F1 cars sound good...for F1 racing. On a road car I don't think that high pitched raspy sound is even all that great. Most definitely prefer the more complex sound of a traditional Ferrari V12, or even the brute thunder from a M279.
@@BigUriel I wont argue. If my anemic checkbook had to shell out for it, I'd probably put equal length headers on a one cylinder motorcycle and call it a day.
@@BigUriel There's one man that went through great trouble and expense to do just the opposite of what became the norm today. And in my opinion he succeeded, what do you think: kzhead.info/sun/g8NyhJyPjGabnp8/bejne.html
This was a phenomenal video. I’ve always been intrigued by why the zonda sounds so different to everything else. It is also my favorite sounding car. I knew it has equal length headers, but I watched videos of other cars with equal length headers and learned that just equal length headers and firing order was not the only thing that made a difference. Now I know why, thank you so much! Made my day!
Thanks. I didn't know too when I had the Nissan.... and it made me very sad to have a very shitty sounding V12 after all that work.
Is it cross firing or sequential firing , that makes it sounds better ?

I've spent years researching just what you need to make that high pitched shriek that the Zonda makes (although the Murcielago also makes this then later special headers make the Aventador do that as well but I still preferred the Murcielago sound). You've just summed it all up into one video.

This is a great video. I have spent many hours researching and pondering this question. It obviously isn’t as easy as it seems to recreate the “$10k japanese exhaust”. So many have tried to duplicate it without the results. I’m excited to see what you are working on!

This is something I always thought about and wish I had the knowledge and ability to make replacement headers for cars, to make the exhaust sounds transformed and incredible. Making a modern shopping car sound like a group A Subaru legacy etc. I honestly think the unique sounds of cars can transform competent cars into legends. I think the sound triggers your emotions, like watching a movie without a score has little emotional connection. Hats off to you!
Thank you. I agree, the sound has to be there to make it feel really good...are we still talking about cars? ^_^'
The title of this video did not age well lol
My compliments on the video and the information. You did your homework! Very well done! Proud to be in your video! Okay, I miss a few things (maybe for a follow up video ;) and there are some assumptions but only one you do not backup with some evidence: the fire order in the collector. You would assume, but as you mention, the Brilliant already sound perfect. We have a likewise project, so maybe we know more in a few months. Btw, if you want, give us an email, we would be glad to be of assistance for your headers.
Thanks for all the compliments, knowing that it comes from one of the best in the business really means a lot to me. The evidence for the firing order is quite hard to find yet. Best I can come up so far is a comparison of the Mustang in the video with the plenty of 8-in-1 symmetrical setups - but it's an apple to oranges comparison, since there all based on different engines. But likewise, there's another project on the back burner, where this could be checked easily. But now I'm really curious on your new project as well... - e-mail sent... ^_^
Nice. Can you explain more about the fire order collector?
I don't know what to say, you really did that homework. I couldn't realize that the bmw rasp was from the colector construction method, genius. It is not only the equal lenghts but a smooth merge collector... awesome
I didn't know either until I tried to make a M120 to sound good - and that was one expensive lesson I tell you! ^_^'

The huayra R is the best sounding bar none. It makes me shiver and emotional it's so good.
I did see all the v12 f1 cars at goodwood last year though and they are unbelievable up close and personal at full throttle
@@Dtp2296 I've just checked the video. I didn't even know they made an NA Huayra. I'm glad they made tough. Was Gordon Murrays T50 at Goodwood too? I wonder how they compare in real life.
I have an acoustics background and I had never considered the impact of header design on engine sound. This makes a lot of sense though. Pulses per second is basically Hz or frequency. If you have more pulses coming out of a single pipe (or speaker) per second, you have a higher frequency. Of all the exhaust tones in this video, I loved the GT 350 the most - 10:13. mmmm that low rumble :P The most *interesting* tone was the Honda at 9:32. It is clearly 2 distinct 'notes' (to make a chord!) which makes sense with the 2 header pipes with slightly different path length. My takeaway: people have different opinions of 'best' tone. But this is a fantastic look at how those tonal characters are created!
I hope you will like the new video... it's like an entertaining physics class but without physics: kzhead.info/sun/aamjksqEioSjrHk/bejne.html
Header design is one of the main components of exhaust notes. Lol
This is the one time I would agree when an exhaust upgrade with no horsepower increase is worth every penny 😊

The sound is absolutely phenomenal. As a welder fabricator, car modifier and "add lightness" snob, these exhaust videos you make always pique my interest

Well... it's 12 thousand now. And I made a new strange and wild video just for you ^_^ kzhead.info/sun/aamjksqEioSjrHk/bejne.html
Excellent journey down the rabbit hole. I've been researching the 8-1 and 12-1 for years. There's another way to run the piping. It's all about the pulses coming out sequentially. A 12-1 v12 at 7000rpm sounds identical to a 12-2 at 14000rpm. You can go 12 into 2 into 1. Or really any combination with sequential pulses going into the collectors 2x 3 into 2 into 1 on each side. then 4 into 2 into 1 with everything for packaging. As long as the various segments remain equal length. In theory there should be no losses if the collector lengths are tuned for the desired torque peak.
12-2 at 14000rpm....? I'm really looking forward to hear that! How come you know so much about it?
@@maisteer That's the Ferrari F1 sound. It's just the number of equally spaced sequential pulses and the collector. Once it gets into one pipe, as long as it's feeding odd even odd even with equal length pipe it will have the sound. a 6 cylinder into one at 20k rpm sounds identical to a 12 cylinder into one at 10k rpm. I learned it mostly from exhaust development and tuning. Length, size, collector length etc. Those grumbly v12s are tuned for lower rpm peak torque. Sounds like crap at high rpm.
Take the 6 pipes on one side into 2 by putting all the even pulses into one and all the odd into the other. Now these two can merge together into 1 further down the line. scavenging is the key. Even fires and creates a vacuum in the pipe to pull out the odd pulse and continues repeating. Repeat the exact same thing on the other side. You can tie the remaining two together wherever it's convenient. It will already be odd even odd even because the left and right side are odd and even firing. Does that make sense?
You can also go back from 1 to 2 after the merge and get the same sound out of both. with further development you could change the length of one side changing pulse timing and doubling the pulse frequency peaking at RPM x.
@@curvs4me Yes, absolutely. Thanks for the detailed answer too.
Exhaust design is my favorite part of being a pistonhead, you could devote your life to it and still learn new things.
That's for sure. But only if the engine has the potential to make it interesting.

This is awesome looking foward to the finish project. One question if you have a v6 is best to merge the 6 together at the same time or you can merge 3 and 3, and the using equal length piping merge them together?
First of all is the V6 firing at an even intervall of 120°? Then it seems that 6-in-1's sound better than 6-in-2-in-1, but I would assume, that's also dependent on how long the secondary pipe is. Or to put it like this, how much time the exhaust pulses have time to interact with each other, before they ALL merge together. At the moment it's just an assumption, I will try to find out for you all sometime.
we need part 2, it's awesome!
Coming..... not soon. The car will have it's first competition in august. So sometime after that...

Haha, after six months working on something completely different, it's time get back working on youtube videos.
It’s not only about the destination its the journey.
Equal lenght headers is the meaning of life. I've been studying 4-1, 6-1, etc. For years. It all started when I bought equal lenght downpipe for my Skyline, then I noticed that some four cylinder motorcycles sounded a lot better than others, and those have 4-1 instead of 4-2 which just sounds... Bad. F12 Berlinetta has equal lenght headers from factory. Another design study I've had, are headers for the Honda CBX 1000 motorcycle. It has a inline six engine, and there are a few 6-1 equal lenght headers that make it sound mental, while the 6-2 or 3-1 just sounds shit. Interesting topic for sure.
Yeah, I wasn't sure how to include the CBX in the video. To me that's the best sounding production inline six ever. 2nd place goes to the RB26. But maybe I have missed another exotic one..
I don't know how I missed this. Absolutely incredible. Thank you!!
Not just the harmonic tuned exhaust pipes, the awesome high pitch sound of a V12 happened by the high RPM in the engines, it happens that only short life high horse power Formula 1 engines are design to reach 10k-20k+ RPM, that's probably the main reason that sounds so good.
It gives them the edge certainly... but the Zonda still sounds quite good despite not revving to the moon. But it's a different kind of nice than a F1 car for sure.
I know this one will get a million views eventually - it has 2 Views already. But I'm not so sure about the very different german version: kzhead.info/sun/ZrGyd8-fm5qwn5s/bejne.html

Before you build it, watch the new exhaust video of mine... so you can avoid the same mistakes ^_^ kzhead.info/sun/aamjksqEioSjrHk/bejne.html
I always thought it was the RPM alone that made the f1 sound
Certainly is one of the biggest factors. But an equally high revving one cylinder doesn't sound like an F1 car either. So more things than just rpm must play a role.
All cars should sound like that!
I heard there is a place like that.... it's called heaven.... or Dubai - I can't remember ^_^
As a musician and mechanic, exhaust has always interested me. Theres more than just loud=good. Diameter of bends can even change sound

More on that in the follow up video. But for now you can checkout: archive.org/details/fourstrokeperfor0000bell - Chapter 9.
I have watched the video 2 times and not sure if I keep missing it but does it ever show the exhaust completed? Does it have the finished sound?
...it was a build in progress. Working on the next video soon.
Prob the best YT video I’ve seen in a while… subbed! Excited to hear what this iteration sounds like!
Thanks. Maybe I can make a better one soon...
Thank you for sharing! Extremely impressive you fit the m120 in an S chassis nissan
It was tight, but not impossible. Doing everything alone from start to finish in 6 weeks was the really impressive part.
@@maisteer I'd love to pick your brain about it, without being specific, I'd like to do something similar. 6 weeks would be impressive for any swap, let alone a bespoke v12!
@@flux_core_fx What would you like to do then?
@@maisteer I have a Z32 I am mildly curious about swapping. It has had an LS and GM Ecotec so far. I am curious about the handling characteristics, sump, and mating to a manual transmission. Thanks so much!
@@flux_core_fx Swapping in the M120? Sump position was terrible on that motor... I think it was right in the middle. But in the S-Chassis the hump could be shortened just enough to make it fit. I used a redrilled a 7.25" Quartermaster Clutch and Flywheel but with ZF-Discs for a BMW 6-speed box. I shortened the bellhousing (a lot) and welded a custom aluminum plate on to make it fit the M120. I used the car for drifting. Nose heavy it was for sure, but the it could make up for it, by making it easy to massage the tires to get the maximum of traction out of them - at least compared to the turbo engines before. It was a very different way of driving.
When buying a four or six cylinder car to apply what you've discussed in this video, would one need to keep in mind space in engine bay? As equal length 4-into-1 or 6-into-1 pipework would require a lot of space? How does one choose a car so an exhaust shop has the best chance to actually be able to design and fit the type of exhaust you spoke about in your video?
Best reach out to celeritech.nl - they can take care of your needs. There is actually a lot more going into it.
That's great! I think I've never was so shocked about an abrupt end! 😂 Love this style, great video. But pleeeeeease do go on. With both, the project AND the video about it
Thanks. Will do. New video in 2 weeks.... but there is a small Preview on my twitter already ^_^
Here just for you a new video about the project... and exhaust science without the science: kzhead.info/sun/aamjksqEioSjrHk/bejne.html
The 0:40 second clip of the Pagani fly by gives off such a cool aesthetic, that would be an amazing high watching that rocket fly down that street, looks like Hollywood too.
Yeah, if I would have somebody in the neighborhood like that... I would pay for his gas just to hear that ^_^
When do we get to see the finished car? Also, how much will you build and ship me this F1sounding exhaust for?
Finished, it's here: kzhead.info/sun/aamjksqEioSjrHk/bejne.html You can buy the jig for only $1 (Link in the description), and let somebody else build it. But watch the video first ^_^'
So I'm doing research to put a set of custom headers on my semi trucks diesel V8. When I find this video. It just so happens that they made a V12 version of said V8 I am tinkering with (slapped on 4 more cylinders/took two inlines and mated them). Did I mention it was a two stroke diesel, 63.5 degree vee angle and with a little bit of tinkering said V12 can hit 3000 or with some mods to the valvetrain 4k rpm. Now I'm getting some really wicked ideas. How crazy would a massive Natrurally aspirated V12 sound with headers like these?
How crazy? I don't know, but I hope the world will find out someday ^_^
Very high quality and tons of information put together concisely, well done
Thank you Oleg. I'm glad you liked it.
Amazing that it makes the difference in sound. Very interesting
Big inspiration. I've been wanting to design and fab up my own headers to create a sound that i like for a while and i see you've also watched a few of the videos that I've watched over and over again for years. Some day...
Yeah, I hope you can make it one day, it's gonna be worth all the trouble ^_^
Thank you for using my 8 into 1 video in this series. Really like this video, funny and very educational! Cheers!
Thank you for creating the 8 into 1 header. It's really inspirational and I hope to hear more of it in the future too. Cheers!
Excellent video, man. Looking forward to seeing the next one.
Thanks. Me too. Can't wait for the next one ^_^
Honestly best content on here right now glad i found this hope they keep coming
I hope that too ^_^ Thank you
Great idea, but how much weight are you adding to the car to achieve that sound?
Hundreds of pounds added in order to get back thousands of smiles. ^_^
Hey man, got suggested your video and really enjoyed it. Saw you say you're not an engineer, just like tinkering, was wondering if you had any knowledge about getting in to intake/exhaust design. Or where you think is a good place to start as an enthusiast/tinkerer. Again, enjoyed the content, would be nice to see more
Thanks. New video in 2 weeks. My recommendation for starters: Read the book 4-Stroke Perfomance Tuning from Graham Bell at least 5 times. ^_^
There is some more content here now, with tinkering and such: kzhead.info/sun/aamjksqEioSjrHk/bejne.html
@@maisteer Just watched it, thanks for replying and the book suggestion !
Awesome video man! Simple, entertaining and easy to watch. Thanks!
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Ohh man that 2nd Aston around 4:12 sounds like a fire or tsunami siren
...but it's definitely not moving like it's on fire ^_^
Pagani has always been one step ahead and ahead of its time
Certainly. Horacio was obsessed with quality and it shows, even decades later.
