The V10 era of Formula 1 produced the best engines the world has ever seen.
They are raw, powerful, revvy and (in my opinion) the best-sounding engines ever.
But how on earth did they make them able to reach over 19 THOUSAND RPM? And why are they not in the current F1 CARS? Well, let me explain.
The V10 era started in 1986 with the 3.5-litre unit built by Alfa Romeo - but really started finding success in 1989 with Renault.
At the time, the engine regulations were pretty free, with one key rule keeping them in check.
The overall engine capacity could not be more than 3.5 litres, and turbos were banned.
So with the rules being free, the engine manufacturers each landed on pretty different designs. With V8s, V10s and V12s all on the grid.
And at one point, they even had a W12 (but it kinda sucked, never actually qualifying for a race)
Ford, at the time, swore by a V8 for its simplicity and relative fuel economy.
Whereas Ferrari stuck to a V12, with complexity and cost not really being an issue for them, they aimed at maximum power.
(And you can see why they chose those by looking at their road cars at the time)

Renault were the first to really make waves with the V10 - where they started to create significantly more power than the V8s and the V10s.
But why? They were all 3.5 litre, naturally aspirated engines? How were they creating more power?

  • They actually reached the end of the line... at around 21.000 rpm the Flame isn't fast enough to keep delivering more Power with more revs, cause the pressure raise starts being slower then the gas cycle in the piston. The work cycles is so Short, it has no time to burn through or expand.

    • They had a similar problem with the current v6s. Mercedes was the first to solve and reaped the benefits during the start of the hybrid era. The solution found was inspired in rocket engine technology and involves a pre-burner: a small combustion chamber in which a small amount of fuel is ignited. The shape of the chamber greatly accelerates the flame to the main combustion chamber, where it spreads and is mixed with more fuel, igniting it. This increased flame spreading speed, the quality of the spread and the burning efficiency.

    • If I recall correctly, at the height of the era, Honda engine reached 22,650 RPM, while the second best BMW was at the low 22,000 RPM range. Correct me if I'm off.

    • @@lucasrocha7721 We (powertrain engineers) call that Turbulent Jet ignituon, or TJI. The effect is that instead of producing one Flame wall from the Spark you create multiple, one from each of the bores of the preignition chamber, leading to a faster burn of the mixture, a steeper pressure gradiant, a higher Peak pressure, more time to (over) expand the gasses and by that way more effiency and power.

    • And then in 2007 the regulations said that engines could not go higher than 19.000rpm in an effort to limit costs of reliability issues

    • @@dsar8727 not about DRS. It's about the number of teams that were competitive and number of different champions. You look at early V8 era. You had Alonso 2006, Raikkonen 2007, Hamilton 2008, Button 2009 and then Vettel 2010. We had the most intense and closest championships in F1 history in those years where it usually went to down to final races and 2-4 drivers can win the championship. That wasn't the case for most of the V10 era. Forget about 2012 where it was perhaps the best season ever in F1. V10 engines may sound, but the V8 era delivered more.

  • When my father and I first visited an F1 race at the Nürburgring in 2004, the sound of those V10 shocked us immensely. It's hard to describe in words, those things SCREAMED like nothing I had ever heard before. First thing we did when we got back that day was buy some earplugs because my god, you needed those. The V8 engines introduced a few years after still sounded great, but it was already a huge step down from the V10's.

    • I was at a saturday F1 in 2021 which of course meant qualifying but also the Porsche Supercup and F3 and F2 came by. Luckily I had earplugs, especially for the Porsche Supercup. We didn't need them for the F1 cars. The one time I actually heard a V10 it was a Jordan with a Mugen V10. It was glorious before it went in to the barriers.

    • I've only heard v8 but I was sitting on the covered grandstand at nürburgring's mainstraight... and my good, the comparison to a fighter jet isn't unreasonable. The whole ground was shaking lol. It felt like someone used a jackhammer on your breast. I covered my ears the whole time the whole time and it was still unreasonable loud (that surely damaged your eyes - most didn't). I was the happiest guy on that day with a crazy big smile. Just pure power that felt like I am in the engine. That's how f1 should sound like - anyone in a 20km circle should hear when it is f1 time! Listening to f1 engines through speakers doesn't even come close to how impressive and awesome they sound actually

    • I remember something similar. Before the first session started i had my earplugs in my hand because i wanted to hear the "unfiltered sound", my uncle who was there pointed out to me that it was silly and i should take his advice to put the plugs in already.... After the first car passed if was putting the plugs in as quickly as possible!!! Damn those V10's where incredible, nothing compared to it (well maybe jets at airshows doing maximum performance AB-takeoff).... Glorious!

    • I went to see a race in hungary 2014. F3 and f2 were waaaay to loud. I really needed earplugs, otherwise i would go deaf. F1 on the other hand was still loud, you just didnt need the plugs. I really enjoyed their sound and loudness. I was 14 at the time and might have a little bias, but it was still a great experience.

    • Any high level motor race requires earplugs. They are all well beyond the threshold of hearing damage if you spend an appreciable amount of time trackside. Even touring cars will damage your ears. I remember being really angry at parents wheeling their babies and toddlers into the Melbourne GP in prams and strollers with no hearing protection on them. What's worse is the cars are so loud, they couldn't even hear their babies screaming...

    • @@johnschall3013From like 1999-2005 or so visited some F1 races with my father here in Europe. It sounded epic, but I am more than grateful that we were always made to use hearing protection. The sound was still great with protection, just a bit quieter. But holy shit was it loud without protection.

    • thanks to my father watching pretty much every single race ever since i know him, i got into F1 at around 2004, when i was just 5 years old. needless to say at the time i wasn't capable of understanding what kind of blessing it was to be able to experience f1 during its peak. sadly never went to an f1 race in my life

  • I was at Monza in 2003, I was 10 at the time, we had "seats" (actually just standing in the grass) at the straight before the parabolica, I don't remember too much about the race but the sound... oh boy that was completely insane.

  • I've been to three GP's in this era, 1 in Spa and 2 in Hockenheim. The V10 sound goes through the ground and right through your body. Beholding a GP start then was an absolute assault on the senses. Best F1 engines ever.

  • I was lucky enough to hear them once in 2005. Every time a session started you could hear them from the other side of the circuit and all I could think was that the drivers were brave to be trying to tame these beasts. The hairs on the back of my neck would stand on end.

  • All around great video. The V10's remain the pinnacle of engine's IMO. Small correction, F1 never had a limit of 17,000 rpm. It's funny how the FIA strayed from V10s because of "cost" as they claim, but the complex power units of today are far more expensive. Unfortunately 3.0L V10s can never be as efficient as the today's hybrid engines.

    • The thing I remember most about the reports at the time was that it was about safety and not cost, though Max Moseley liked to use safety as a catch all to force through changes quickly. I could kind of see the reason as those V10 cars could hit 230mph with less run off, though ironically the V8's cornered quicker as the smaller engine allowed for better airflow and more downforce.

    • ​@@andrewcarter9649 think the big safety concern was catastrophic engine failure, much like in top fuel limitations. Often see it cited that turbos were banned in top fuel to control speed, but is heaps better ways to control that, nitrometh melts turbos like no tomorrow and thats a recipe for taking out multiple cars that some are not flirting with the limits of sensible engineering near as much.

  • F1 is still living off the V10 era. Anyone who witnessed it became instantly hooked and we still watch F1 today, get others into it, get our kids into it, all because of this era. There's no way the V6 era or even the V8 era could ever inspire the same kind of passion the V10 cars did.

  • It should also be mentioned that a bigger bore/piston is accompanied by bigger valves. Which equates to more air/fuel flow for the extra rpm

    • Yes but the piston dosent go down as far as something with a smaller bore and longer stroke, your moving roughly the same amount of air

In a 3l engine with 100% volumetric efficiency the power output will be almost the same at the same rpm so bore/stroke is a minor factor. The problem is maintaining a high VE at high RPM, and the bigger valves help with that. So your reply to soso1p2011 doesn't really make because you aren't talking about the same things. If you like engines do some research about VE, it's a simple concept that should be explained in 5 minutes in any decent KZhead video.

  • Back in the '60's Honda wanted to see if rpm could outrun the flame speed at very high revs. This CAN happen which then needs more timing advance but if the cylinder plumbing is made correctly the VE will increase as the rpm's come up and not need more timing. I think they hit 24,000 and the flame front was still accelerating with the engine speed.

    • Good old Honda. People also like to forget that in the late 80’s early 90’s the big four Jap motorcycle manufacturers (Yamaha, Honda, Kawi, Suzuki) all had 250cc bikes that were capable of revving past 18000-19000rpm

    • @@headlibrarian1996 Honda hired the Donnington track for their 50th Anniversary and they had Mike Hailwood and John Surtees going around the track in Honda F1 cars one a 3 litre and the other a 1.5 litre but the star of the show was a 297 6 cylinder that Mike used to race in the 350 class that used to rev to 18k rpm people gathered around it and then two Honda executives (in suites ) bumped it off and everyone flew away people said you could hear it ten miles away. But the E class how can you get excited about a 2.5 kw washing machine motor can you?

  • I remember sitting on the main straight at IMS for the USGP and the sound echoed because the tall grandstands on one side and the garages and more grandstands on the other side. The sound of 20-22 starting the race was GLORIOUS!

  • reason V10 sound so good its that the exhaust pulse is in 5/4 time, which is used in spy-esque musics like the mission impossible songs or in jazz. its has more "groove" in it due to the mismatch of the beat number and count number. V12 is in 6/4 timing, which most people will refer as an extended 4/4 timing and V8 is 4/4. It is very widely used so it doesn't sound as exotic

    • That's really interesting! I've seen a few videos about V12 exhaust setups and how dramatically they effect sound. For example an Aston Martin and a Zonda have very similar engines and the same firing order but one sounds like a VERY angry tractor and the other one sounds like, well a Zonda.

    • I'm a musician and there's no way you can get a 'feel' for or can even determine the time signature at over 10,000 BPM. You might prefer the sound and it might line up with your musical tastes - but that's a coincidence, nor your slow-ass brain with a 15ms thinking latency somehow recognizing the time signature.

  • I grew up with F1 in the early 80's and haven't missed a single race since 1984. To this day, the V10 still blows my senses through the roof and Montoya's lap of Monza makes for one hell of a ringtone. There's some old media that Renault released as a soundtrack and also a long form video on VHS of the factory developing their V10 back in the early 90's, around 1993~94 I believe. My mate had a copy back then but I can't seem to find it ANYWHERE now except for random clips of the intakes inhaling fuel and wailing their guts out but if you can find it, I swear it will blow your head clean off. A huge piece of F1 died inside when they phased them out for V8's and then finally with the lawnmowers.

    • I'm with you. Formula 1 died for me with the introduction of the hybrid lawn mower engines, and the final nail in the coffin was the halo. I haven't watched a second of any race since the end of the 2017 season. I'm sure good racing is going on, etc, but I couldn't care less anymore.

  • I'll never forget hearing the sound of the V10s heading out for their 7AM warmup at the 1999 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. The Albert Park circuit is near to the centre of the city and the sound traveled for kilometers across the city. Imagine the tranquility of a Sunday morning shattered by up to 20 V10s revving to impossible speeds. Spine tingling and unforgettable.

  • I had the pleasure an absolute privilege of witnessing the V10 beasts on 3 occasions at Albert Park..2002,2003 & (2005)... which was the last year of them. I have to say I have never heard anything like it...phenomenal is an understatement, the noise they made going through the turn 9 & 10 chicane going up through the gears was mind blowing and deafening.. unreal.   • Early n/a era with manual gearboxes was simply glorious. You could hear the drivers shifting and matching revs. Engine down shifts into corners were epic. True, paddle shifters sounded just as good and resulted in faster times but gone was the driver working the throttle.

  • I was rewatching the 2006 Bahrain Grand Prix, and both commentators said they didn't like the sound of "those new V8's" because it was too loud and not particulary good sounding. I find it funny because now we would give everything only too have V8's back !

    • compared to the V10s the V8s did sound boring, shrill but without individual character with the V10 every engine had a characteristic sound, you could tell which car it was without looking the BMW was harsh, and sounded like it was tearing apart the gearbox on downshifts, the Renault was singing with its melody telling you what it was doing, the Ferrari was very smooth,....

  • That V10 sound is even more glorious when heard in real life than on TV. TV or video can't remotely do it justice. In RL those machines just sound brutally violent and powerful. I always will remember my first F1 race that I attended live. When the cars flowed out of the pit lane at low RPM for their first qualifying session even this sounded so loud and threatening it nearly blew me away. And when they came screaming down the long straight at full throttle it made all my hairs in the neck stand up. So wonderful!

  • Oh the memories, I had a Renault documentary on their V10, at some point they ran the telemetry of an Hockenheim lap (old circuit, trough the forest) with the engine on a dyno, blasted that on my hi-fi Kenwood stereo, sounded almost like the engine was in my living room, so awesome!

  • The Honda RA109E V10 was actually the most powerful V10 in 1989 with a reported 685bhp vs the Renault's 650bhp, and helped Prost and Senna dominate that season. Honda even later produced an even more powerful V12 with 800bhp. It wasn't until Honda's departure in 1992 that Renault produced the best engine that year, with their RS4 V10.

I can hear them from the main part of the city in Montreal and as they got louder and louder as you got closer and closer to the track by walking then you get there and they turn your beer flat because of the sheer noise and power from them.   • Here's a freeby guys, as I feel like you're missing literally half the video: Typically torque will drop off as rpms increase, meaning that you can't simply increase the redline and make more power, no matter if the engine can take it, mechanically. Torque is directly related to how much air and fuel you can fit into the engine during the intake stroke. Combustion efficiency comes into play (derived mainly from how well mixed your air and fuel are, as well as compression ratio, combustion speed and ignition angle). You can change valve lift, timing and duration to optimize that valve opening window to get as much air as you can through the intake ports, but at 19000rpm, that valve opening window is SO small, that those ports actually become a bottleneck. (theoretically your maximum airflow happens when the airflow reaches the speed of sound, beyond which you get a 'choked flow', where the air travels faster but loses density so your essentially moving basically the same amount of air molecules). Where I'm getting at is: if torque drops off faster than the rpms can add additional horsepower (HP = torque * rpm / 5252), then this means that revving higher will net you less HP. Luckily, to not explode your rotating assembly at high rpms, you typically reduce the bore/stroke ratio, meaning you'll get a bigger piston diameter, slowing down your average piston speed during the revolution. This ALSO translates to ***more space to put it bigger valves***. Basically: as your bore becomes bigger, even if you reduce the stroke to maintain an identical displacement, you benefit from having the possibility to use bigger valves, which will flow more at higher rpms, thus allowing you to maintain the cylinder filling that is critical to maintaining enough torque at high rpms to generate more HP. The draw-back is that huge valves actually flow like crap at low rpms, induce terrible air/fuel mixing, both because you lack air speed through the intake ports at lower rpms. This is a contributing factor as to why high revving engines like motorcycles get such bad efficiency at low rpms compared to typical road car engines.

  • V10 def had a beautiful sound. You could feel it in your bones in a way you don't get from the hybrid 6. I will point out that while a completely difference sound Formula E cars sound awesome, like jet fighters. You get this satisfying Doppler shift sound effect when they shoot by. They just need to be a bit louder.

    • I am by no means an engineer but maybe a good comparison would be to look at road cars NA V12/V10 engines from the 90s/early 00s to now for comparison and add 50-100+hp (because of more and more regulations) F.ex Ferrari Enzo/McLaren F1 Both 6.0L V12 NA, producing 650hp roughly 110hp / pr L ´´Normally´´ you would get 130hp pr L (GT3, Ferrari 812, Aventador, Zonda etc) all around 130hp pr L. They can push it more, but for regulations and reliability they have to keep it around this area. Some cars are more extreme,150hp pr L (Valkyrie) or 160hp (T.50) F1 cars with 3.0L V10 could achieve 320hp pr L and the power levels were still rising even though they put restrictions in 2005 We maybe would have seen 400-450hp pr L or more If there were no regulations and car manufacturers were allowed to continue to improve

    • They aren't currently limited due to revs, they can rev to 15k in the rules, the issue is the fuel flow of 100kg/hr, that's why they only rev to 12k now. But in 2026 the MGU-H will be removed which muffles a lot of the sound, so they will be louder in 2026, but probably won't rev any higher either.

    • Understandable. Late V10s and early V8s are my preferred engines sound-wise, but that's mostly because these are the ones I grew up with. I don't even remember the end of the V10 era I was so young, but dad would be watching F1 and I'd be in the living room with him, so it's the sound I'd hear in my early childhood, and early V8 era is when I remember watching F1 the most (2006-2008 in particular, I had to stop for a while after Hungary 2009 with the accident and the slight trauma of almost losing Massa right after being robbed of his title) before coming back full time last year.

  • There was also an SAE study in the early 80s that looked at number of cylinders vs Parasitic Loss. The findings were i3, i5 and v10 were the most efficient layouts. Yes, the best engines ever in Formula 1 were killed by woke/green/budget bullshit. They were killed for ideology, not technology.
