    • Not so hard to believe. Every wood has it's own type of unique look and feel. For a person that enjoys perfection any disturbance is easily noticed. IMO, it would of been better with a clear epoxy to gently enhance the original blemish into the look of the wood. Far easier to explain and easier for the viewer to accept without the jarring geometric (not natural) patch. That said, only the wife and he will know about it and have likely already accepted it. For the occasional guest that is rude enough to point it out, don't invite them over again. Who needs that kind of uninvited stress in their life?

  • I love how transparent you are with troubleshooting and mistakes with your materials along the way. A lot of these diy builders try to be so perfect from even the way they shoot and edit their videos let alone how they frame their designs and functionality of it. You on the other hand have pro skills, have great tools and utilize them to your best ability and even with all you have going for you, you still demonstrate problems that people will find themselves having when doing their own projects in a similar fashion. The way you find fixes to your problems is so clever and I love the realistic feel of your vids.

  • What a gorgeous door and from someone who’s had to do way more mudding than I ever planned on, excellent job with the drywall! Your new door is a work of art, with a graceful balancing of the wood grain on the various pieces. Like you, I’m happier with barn doors in barns and appreciate seeing how others install more elegant door systems. I work with basic tools so it’s fun to see the commercial equipment. Your butterfly inset to mitigate the end split is ingenious, thanks. That’s part of why I watch complex building projects, there’s always something that’s helpful for my basic woodworking and I enjoy improvising with what I have. I find it very true too… planting ideas to germinate in the mind of others can smooth things out a lot. Anxiety can be a tough one, the inner insecurity drives some to feeling a need for perfection. That was a skillful non-engagement response on your part. Thanks again for sharing your skills in showcasing living wood.

Re: The old door: If anyone has ever tried to dust a rough wood anything, you’ll know what a pain it is bc, not only the dust, but also the fuzzies from the dusting cloth get stuck in the wood and it looks terrible. Whoever thought rough wood has ANY place in a home has never tried to clean it! Re: The filled knot: you did an awesome job of seamlessly filling that knot hole, and should feel proud to point that out. You cd also ask, what wd they rather see? A clunky old knot? Or a seamlessly fitted and smooth replacement? Wood is organic; it has characteristics and you can’t get it without! 😊 TFS & keep up the good work! 😄

  • I know this is super late but as a drywaller I just wanted to tell you putting joint compound right onto wood (especially load bearing wood) is a surefire way to get cracks, as you know wood moves seasonally and while the wood can bend, joint compound is extremally rigid and brittle. If you do get cracks I suggest cutting a slightly bigger spot and screwing the backing wood 1/2" recessed for drywall and make sure to use fiber tape to help it resist movement.

  • "Make your wife think it was her idea." IS amazing advice indeed. Tired of your wife not deciding where she wants to eat? Tell you you're taking her somewhere, ask her to guess, then take her to where she guesses. Apply that logic wherever. Makes your life easy and gets you all the brownie points.

  • Looks fantastic. I am a professional locksmith and don’t like plastic hardware on heavy objects. I would have tried to find metal everything. I also would have considered to put a wood reinforcement behind the drywall and used walnut, oak or birch 1/2 inch dowels at screw points on the drywall drilled and gorilla glued into the reinforcement wood behind the drywall. In as much as the weight of this door is mostly in compression (downward), accidents and kids happen. No one want the door to smash down or pull from the wall because someone fell down into to it from inside the pantry. Basic plastic anchors are a compromise. I don’t use them for any weight bearing purposes. But, the door looks Uber cool. Love the sleek operation and finish.

I think she is just stating what bothers her. I had someone tell me, an adult to an adult, when I staple papers, would I please make sure the corners were more even before I stapled--what? It is the OCD. I bet everyone has at least one pet peeve. He tried his best and put it at the bottom. Hmmn, could he have admitted to a plug he tried hard to conceal and challenged her to find it? Sounds like something I would do.
