I was standing on the fence at about the 60ft mark for this pass. Car leaves straight and absolutely moves.
Lol. No you were not.
@@CadillacDriver oh, okay
Thanks for the shout-out Peter!
4:25 Holy crap that LAUNCH
What a great car. Amazing to see all the work that goes into a strange combo like this
gotta be a little crazy, and 100% committed to build a car like this. love it. this modified 4cyl class is a lot more interesting than cars that are set up exactly the same way.
Great. So much info. Thanks Peter Elmer Racing does absolutely Insane engineering work always at the Peak.
We can neither confirm nor deny that we approve of this comment.
Always appreciate your sharing the behind the scenes and commentary. 👍🏁
Kinda surprised the Ecotec hasn’t become a tuner favorite. When they introduced it, Chevy was very keen on racing it, with drag, land speed, whatever. Just to prove that it would make one ecozillion horsepower. This, and the 4200… Early 2000s GM was on some serious psycho work.
as an owner of a 2005 impala ss, it baffles me how few people know
ì own a 2009 ss turbo and i can barely find oem parts for it, fucking garbage gm management, btw the engine in the video is a saab b204r, has nothing to do with the cavalier and cobalt 2.2 ecotec, neither my 2.0t or any 2.4 outside of the timing system, water and oil pump, the b204r or lsj can hold about 500whp without any mods, its the only one, my 2.0t is foam cast so has pourrous issues, the more modern version in buicks has very weak pistons and rods, thats why its not a tuner favorite, gm fucked all up
Ecotec powered Saturn was my first car. I loved that thing. Tons of torque for what it was
@@retrocompaq5212 Wrong. Carl already said several times on his blog & other videos its from a late-model Cobalt. ( Gen-II L61 variant.
ty for the content this car is bonkers. the team effort is massive. one of the best vids in 24 ive watched! 🏁
Tack för alla filmer under året!! Gott nytt år!!💥
Insane that it's not billet
Billet doesn't mean forged
Larry from Drag International - "Cast is Fast !!! "
And it's a ecotech😳
Ecotechs are built different only engine that can beat a k series
@@mikej9450 Quite true but the 4G63 3SGTE and SR20 guys will beg to differ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Be careful they will come after you here in the comments section 🤣🤣🤣
Honestly, I can't imagine what it feels like to do 241 mph in 5 seconds, It's insane.
I think, and have thought it through for years, this might be the most awesome machine I've ever seen in sub-V8 categories. 👍
If you haven't seen it, check out the 8V Volvo B230 from Rickard Thomsson. 1800 HP with SOHC 8v
I love, their sweatshirts. 4 sparkplugs, its enough!😃 Amazing car!
The level of sophistication is beyond compare. This level of applied technology on a big cube Pro-Mod would be amazing.
These are the top 4cyl promod crews in the world. The top 8cyl are at this level if we are talking NHRA promod. I'd say pro stock and all the top and funny cars are a few notches beyond due to 5x budget or more.
Mike morans billet bullet 670" twin turbo laid down 6144hp on a hub dyno..... its not even close to being done.
@@EnglertRacing96 That’s some amazing power.Aren’t there some 900 inch engines in the making?
@@babaoreally8220 not sure there's much making more other than top fuel running nitro
Good to see you back, Peter.😊
This is a truly impressive build.
Thanks for the share, Peter. All hail the algorithm!
Sjuka bilar och bra film som vanligt Peter 💪 ser fram emot mera 😊
proudly from the Quebec
they own a sweet track over here, napierville , you should come visit , its in Quebec
Peter I love your videos man. Sending you best wishes for Christmas 🎄 and the new year.
Great video, Thanks for Showing and Explaining some of the Jobs that goes into this types of Cars.
very cool! Love your knowledge and observations!
The 2.2 Ecotec is in my 04 Ion, this makes me happy.
Tack 🤗👍
Fantastic upload sir. You might also like the Red Demon It's a 4cyl AWD manual that's not to far off from this team. Main difference. The Red Demon seems alot more violent, and he has to shift gears.
Red Demon is awesome, but about a second slower on the 1/4 mile than this car.
and like 50 mph down, this car hit 260 something at wcf and took the mph record@@garageredzone
What a rad and unusual build! Merry Xmas folks :)
Representing Quebec!
Good to see you back peter
Great content. The fast 4cyl are far more exciting to me than the nhra prostock series. Pretty cool an ecotec is still getting it done. Thanks for putting in the work.
I used watch the boat drags at Blarney's Island. The little outboards always seemed like they were going faster than the big blocks. Crazy rpm's. They still have the races every Thursday in the summer.
Better than any honda, nissan, mazda, vw, audi, mercedes, bmw engine.
@@shadowopsairman1583any?
Drive a b or k series honda a sir or type r model and then tell me a turd eco crap is better than a honda@shadowopsairman1583
How has a Honda not beaten this?
Great job and thanks for sharing
Only two 4 cylinder engines hit 5s and thats the K24 and Ecotec. As a Honda guy I give Carl props for taking the record back. Such beast platforms. You guys can argue which one is better or faster but at the end of the day both have their pros and cons. Both are amazing engines and both have plenty of aftermarket.
This car is one of those rare & exotic work of art.
i wished we got more videos like these about other drag cars tho would be nice to see
that turbo compressor wheel might be made out of carbon composite as it looks to be black, I saw a picture of one floating around internet at some point
Could that handle such high temperatures?
@@Niels_Dn Turbozentrum among others, showed several Composite turbine housings. Could be possible or maybe it's another magic piece from Elmer Racing.
@@gafrers i dont think you can beat billet aluminium/titanium in compressor wheels.. temps aren't that high, tho higher for any composite to be used as epoxy doesn't like that :D
@@exvilsDo you have any idea how hot the carbon/carbon brakes on an F1 car get? The matrix doesn't have to be epoxy.
@@exvils I have no clue just stating what I've read and seen online. Also not talking of the compressor wheel but "only" the compressor housing. Sadly I have no actual info about it.
thank you
thanks for vid!
Thanks peter. Subscribed. A diesel power type application with the 10speed. Keeping the motor in the heat and just adding a bit more ratio, and fuel, and spark, by tiny increments. Huge complexity to make it behave. He's a smart tuner to get this far with it. Very cool. The new Blueprint engines 3.4 litre 4 cylinder should shake up the world a tiny bit. 340hp and 500ftlbs naturally aspirated. A new dedicated iron block from them, that can fit a single Chevrolet LS3 head, or a ford Windsor head. The LS3 headed engine made the 340hp. Give it a moment, and there will be a billet alum block for that setup and 600hp. 340hp is more than most V6's you can purchase new and most of those are right at 4 litres.
The Honda K-series already makes 518 hp NA and there's no way that a pushrod engine makes over 100 lb-ft/liter without being heavily turbocharged.
Merry Christmas mate
Amazing 👏
It was either last year or the year before that they changed from a 5 speed to a 7 speed. Crazy to think it now has a 10 speed.
Super impressive to get that out of such a small motor;
Just for a comparison, John Mihovetz prepped 4.6 4V cast block/heads has made 3,000 hp on the Westech dyno. Billet not required
Always loved the 2.2 liter ecotecs
Ahhhhh world cup finals in my home state of Maryland! MAN I miss that place! Definitely the place record's are made and broken and remade ! Epic track!
What an amazing little engine
Awesome! Is the base engine something like the Z20LET? I had one in my Opel Astra Turbo Coupe, and i was in love with it. Some tuner here in Germany built one in an Opel Speedster/Lotus Elise Dragster, it made Wheelies! 😅
Sounds good. Would like to drive it around town.
hehe, the exhaust housing of the turbo looks like a mini Metso MDR slurrypump casing:)
Neat video!
0:12 I was about to comment that fastest 4cyl in the world (with stock block, no billet/custom) was 2.2L ecotec 😅🤣 and look what we have here.. I though someone beat the long standing records with something made from billet/reengineered 6:51 exducer looks quite small, I wonder how much boost they run, as its small frame turbo.. do someone know how many blades they run? Historically 7+7 was best in any size between 44-72mm when it came to flow, efficiency and pressure ratio (with straight blades) tho garrett switched to 9+0, 10+0, 11+0.. 13+0 (depending on size) with most recent turbo generations so i wonder what they run on that unit
They goin fast! Like pro stock cars
😮 Absolutely insane I will always be a V8 guy but how can you not appreciate a car that does 5.80's on four cylinders? There was a time when that would be a good pass in top fuel.
Running a dizzy too! It's just so basic but wow it works!
Finland mentioned, That indeed is a lightweight turbo in this beast. Very proud to see a finnish engineered part in the fastest 4 cyl car
In Sweden there was a CRAZY 3rd Gen Camaro with a B21ft-based monster making somewhere in the 4 digits.
Hope you're doing well peter
I have a turbo 2.2 ecotec in my Vw Manx and I want to make it scream but I can’t seem to find after market parts for it.
I've been waiting for a bit from you. When will we see some new from yours. (Cars) . Have the best...
Really cool and also fast car
This little 4cyl can hang with a lot of outlaw v8s 🤯
what was the turbine housing from?
its the Vtec yo!
Bit 'light' on the technical details which would normally comprise of; Compression ratio Charge Pressure and all the other good stuff that makes dinosaur juice go bang
I love it and no less as a canadian! 👍
Those are my home track boys. They run the best track in Canada because they are racers themselves and are super passionate about it...clearly lol.
finally some respect for the I4
And they are from Quebec napierville Dragway... carl top gun Brunet and Nicholas brunet
So it looks like this 2.2 litre 4 cyclinder is somewhere in the 1,000 to 1,200 hp per LITRE range from what I am reading. Bet the whole car at the staging area tips the scales at under 1,800 pounds or so. Just a guess. 5.82 @ 243 ish mph quarter...
Awsom car.
I'd be interested to see fastest fwd car. It must be much harder to build.
Very hard there are fwd h pattern manual hondas running in the 7 seconds these days
Maybe no longer the fastest today...but many years ago an amazing woman, check out Stephanie Eggum ran the fastest fwd Honda h pattern car 10-15 years ago. She passed away in a skydiving accident. But she's still a legend I'm this world 💯👍
Que Categoria de arrancada é essa que eu gostaria de seguir no youtube
Hasnt the ecotec been the fastest 4 cyl engine for over a decade now? I remember reading about an ecototec holding world record many years ago. Maybe it was the same team?
The Honda K-series takes the record from time to time. This record is only 0.03 seconds quicker than the record set by the K-series powered 'No War' and they still have a quicker MPH.
3:01 I can hear a Puertorican announcer loud and clear. 👌😂👍
That's wild. Any idea of the sort of HP@RPM that they are capable of getting? Next challenge 2 cylinders? :)
Sorry i did not ask about RPM and HP numbers.
Looking at the times and weight of these cars...probably around 2200hp. Not sure of rpm. But mazworx 5 sec SR20 ran 11000rpm. This can't be far off.
There are 2000hp bullet block k series hondas turning 11500krpms
there are other dyno videos of it online at around 1800whp, but I'd be sure those are not headline figures. It's probably making more in full race use. Pretty amazing. Would love to know more detail of the engine itself
What time 0-100 ? 402 - 5,8 ))
That's some quick shifting to get through 10 gears in 6 sec 😯
It uses a pneumatically shifted Liberty 10 speed controlled by their in-house ECU. Pretty cool piece of technology.
Tokébac icitte ❤
Like 20 years ago I had an S10 with the 2.2 and this makes my head explode to think this thing runs 5's with one😳
Yes, I realize this engine is no where near to the production 2.2, but still mind blowing.
That is very fast for a 4cyl!
Being a liberty there’s no shift time, gearbox only transmit power in power, not coast. And if there was half a second per shift, 10 gears, there goes your et… Dogs for the next gear are engaged and before the transmission binds, ramps on the coast side of ring of the previous gear kicks the dogs out of gear. Pretty ingenious and fool proof
When he said half second in the video I think he meant they’re in each gear for about half a second, not that the shift time is half a second.
@@piefliesmakes sense! I Didn’t interpret that way, my fault
Who would think a Subaru liberty gearbox would be strong enough
Its not a regular cobalt engine its a supercharged cobalt lsj engine or saab 9-3 turbo engine
Suomalinen turbo.👍
Why the distributor though? Is that due to the class they are in, or is there a technical reason for that?
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. 👍🏼
some people think a mag/dizzy offers better spark, and in some cases that may be true. Oddly in an older video they do have a rail of coils mounted and in use, but the dizzy is also present. Backups for backups. I guess spark must be an issue for them kzhead.info/sun/q9dueripm4xqpn0/bejne.html
The MSD boxes offer a hotter spark than coil-on-plug systems and you'd need 4 of them (at ~$750 each) and 4 coils (at ~$300 each) for a DIS system. I'd question whether or not a hotter spark actually makes it to the spark plug through the distributor and plug wires, though.
@@PistonAvatarGuy With a MSD pro mag maybe, there are several CDI boxes that will easily provide enough spark for this application. FuelTech, M&W, MSD Pro 600 just to name a few.
@@ThePopeProductions Enough, but as much as an MSD 7 series ignition? Anyway, this Ecotec never had a distributor, so these guys intentionally "broke" their ignition system.
What is the power and torque on this vehicle ? The weight ?
Im going to bet its less than 2600 lbs. With driver??
kzhead.info/sun/q9dueripm4xqpn0/bejne.html
All those cars(the ecotec and the 2 hondas(pimar and Nowar) they are way past 2,000hp There's also another honda(name it Jrjoshy)using a S2000 engine and have a incredible amount of 6.0 pases with no billet block
Go check out kaku racing sr20 Datsun 510. It's in street form running 6s with a 4 banger. Amazing car from Puerto Rico
haha, i wanna make a portable 7 axis HAAS now :P
GM didn't spend as much money on the development of these engines as rhe import elitest like to think. Cast block, cast head. GM used to detune the cars and go rounds because even today Hondas have difficulty going rounds at an event. Nice Peter work. You van Google all the development.
The amount of money spent is irrelevant, it was the fact that they specifically developed the engine to dominate the import racing scene and had a factory racing team competing with individuals who were working out of their home garages. People were very annoyed. And of course the block and head are cast, what else would they be? Billet parts in a $20k production car?
Looks like a gto or holden monaro to me
I think I heard 6 or 7 gears DURING burnout!
Adeen did the 6's long b4 anyone else in a Volvo 4-banger.
Whats the horsepower and torque specs
It was listed on their website at around 3650 bhp & 2330 Tq.
4:00 It's wild as fuck, looks like Godzilla's scream
Must have a really short stroke
241 in 5 secs w a 4cyl is nuts
Is that the Z22SE? Or was there another 2.2 ecotec GM sold in the ealry 2000s? Super common engine in Vauxhall / Opel stuff outside the US if so, but really uncommon to tune heavily. The VX220 / Speedster guys supercharge them but never heard of one past even 400hp. The Z20 however is pretty trivial to build an 800hp bottom end for. Not surprised a Z22 block sleeved or with the coolant passages blocked off or whatever they did, will take a shitload of abuse.
they're all "ecotec" format, but that's more akin to the Saab B207, or LSJ in the US. And in a video somewhere it says it's a 2004 era motor. I think there was a later 2.2, but in a VVT type ecotec, direct injection setup. It's not one of those engines. Obviously it'll be a custom rotating assembly either way. Block filled, no coolant etc. Would be nice to get more detail though
@@blow0me ahh a b207 would make a lot of sense. It's a shame with these world class drag racing cars they're super unlikely to show close up details to maintain a competitive advantage.
@@JamesBalazs not too sure there are many using the GM platform ? Although things they do are fairly generic across most engines to hang together. Most odd or unusual bit is where he says they spray additional oil to help cool the exhaust valve springs.
It is not a filled block either. It's sleeved, girdled fire ringed, and studded with unibolts from the crank girdle to the head. Really just a run of the mill Ecotec block with extra top cylinder support all held together with U bolts. Crazy that it works, but works well.
@@tdb19872 Any further details on it ? would be interesting to see
Same engine that sits in newer Saabs as well
Cool! I saw when i edited that a part in the back of the engine had the Saab logo on it!
@@PeterBjorckwhen GM was doing the original development, they reached into the Saab parts for the sand cast turbo head. The lost foam casting on the NA head would start doing some bad stuff at around 700hp.
How many hp ?
I don't think they will post numbers, and most of these teams will never dyno them at max power. But the 4 cylinder cars running low 6s and high 5s are typically around 2200hp and up.
What motor is that?
2.2 liter Ecotec.
It acts like traction control when it shifts.
