Formula 1 wrecks like the one at Monza - where Verstappen did a burnout on Hamilton’s head - cost championship points and cold, hard cash. In 2021, those are both more precious than ever. When a big accident happens, that sends teams looking through their couches for change, but also wondering who should pick up the bill. So today, we’re gonna look at the high cost of F1 wrecks, figure out why they’re so expensive, and with special guest Scott Mansell of Driver 61, find out why they happen in the first place.

    • For how F1 engines are built, look into Judd engines. They talk about it a bit there but those are old F1 engines. You won't see much on newer stuff as F1 is very secretive but there is some stuff out there if you look. How long they last is different for everyone and depends on how much they want to push them (see this year with Merc and Red Bull taking more engines, and as a result, penalties, to push their engines more.) But generally it's ~7 races. 21 races a season, so 3 engine changes which means no penalties. Changing engine modes between quali and race is banned as of this year (or last I can't remember). "Party mode" used to be quali mode and that's not allowed anymore. As for in-race changes they make you'll likely never know what it means other than the number. Like on radio them saying "change engine mode to 84" means nothing to us but it does to them. It could be faster or slower depending on how they want to race and they don't want other teams knowing that because they can strategise around it. If you want more info, checkout Driver61's channel (the guy in this video) or come over to Reddit on /r/F1Technical and there's loads of information in the wiki and the posts.

With a spectacular and memorable mid-season crash. Plus the electric debut of Max Verstappen. 2008: One of the greatest finales in F1 history with the championship being decided on the last lap of the last race by one point, leaving us with one of the most iconic sports calls of all time: "*IS THAT GLOCK GOING SLOW?*" 2007: A three-way title fight between giants of the sport with the lead of the championship changing almost every race. 2003: A breakout season by a rapid Kimi Raikkonen bringing him within striking distance to snap Schumacher's winning streak. 1999: After a shocking accident that left Michal Schumacher with a broken leg and out of the championship fight, a nail-biting title run between the original Flying Finn Mika Hakkinen and an unlikely underdog in Eddie Irvine reignited the historic Ferrari v McLaren rivalry. 1994: The tragic death of one of the greatest drivers in F1 history in Ayrton Senna left the championship wide open for two young, incredibly talented drivers in Schumacher and Damon Hill to fight for a title full of controversy and close finishes. 1989: The birth of one of the greatest rivalries the sport has ever seen in Prost v Senna which can be summed up in one dramatic word - Suzuka. 1986: Another three-way title fight between yet another three giants of the sport full of mishaps, drama and incredible races. 1984: The debut of a young, phenomenal driver in Ayrton Senna and the closest championship margin of victory ever in the history of the sport of 0.5 points between Niki Lauda and Alain Prost. 1976: A feature-length inspiring tale featuring a horrific, near fatal crash which Niki Lauda turned into a miraculous return despite third degree burns in a close championship fight versus James Hunt which was decided on the last race under torrential rain.

  • Awesome! Scott is awesome also! Part of the F1 circle of info for sure. i was a little surprised how cheap a rear wing was, I had guessed $200k. Well, Mercedes probably has that much R&D into theirs for sure LOL!

    @radamus210@radamus2102 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah the R&D usually isn't a factor in this, it's just how much it would cost for a replacement. If it were, the prices would be much much higher.

However, at 8:36, slightly triggered (not that deep, just an opinion, please read on) at how you used Bottas and not Grosjean as an example of the safety. That there in '19 was a absolute horrendous crash but he came out unscathed....unless I've missed the main point, but this is my 2 cents/opinion, would love to have a discussion if anyone thinks different

  • Good thing they showed Valtteri and Lance bowling the entire field in Hungary. IMO if a crash like that happens in the next seasons, the driver who caused the crash and their team must be the one that gets financially penalized or have a grid penalty. It also seems silly that some teams received grid penalties for no fault of their own.

  • Hey guys, A common misconception on F1 suspension is that it is very advanced. Having worked at the Ferrari F1 team, one of the lead packaging engineers there said he believed the suspension is in reality the simplest element on the whole car - it's just kinematics and topology optimisation of the components. If you can design suspension for a road-car, you can do it for an F1 car. You just need to know how much anti-dive, squat, bump-steer, camber-change and so on you want on your car!

    @Breakthehabbitzz@Breakthehabbitzz2 жыл бұрын
    • Im not really a follower of F1 but I do know the suspension isn't as complex as some would expect. It only seems off because terminology is pretty out there compared to other motorsports and grossly different from passenger cars. For example, Anti-Dive and squat aren't terms used in stock car racing (EG, NASCAR -- or not before 2022, at least). But all still part of the shocks - commonly referred to as dampers. Anti-Dive and squat is effectively the compression and rebound stiffness settings -- stiffer compression means the shock will compress less during load, softer means weight transferred will 'shorten' the shock, which will cause braking dive if at the front, or squat in the rear on acceleration. For the rebound setting, a slower rebound will see the shock extend to 'normal' slower than a faster 'Rebound' setting -- Rebound is exactly as the name suggests, how quickly the shock 'rebounds' to its 'neutral' state. Plus, now I don't know if this is still true or not, but I recall a premier open-wheel series using a 'third spring' which is unheard of to most. I don't know it well (again, not a fan of any open wheel series), but as I understand it, it more or less acts as an ARB, limiting chassis twist in specific conditions. If I'm wrong on that, please correct me. I'm used to 4 sets of shocks and springs -- one on each corner, and chassis attitude being controlled by shock settings, spring stiffness, thicker Sway (Anti-roll) Bars, and the Panhard (Track) bar, plus the use of a 'weight jack' which was nothing more than a jack-screw adding or releasing pressure on a given spring. I suppose the term 'Third Spring' would be accurate if each end of the suspension was mainly comprised of hard-linked bars and joints leading into a single, centralized spring or spring pair that opposed one another rather than the full 'independent' suspension that modern passenger vehicles (and the 2022 NASCAR Cup Car) have. Again, I'm used to cars with 4 shocks and springs -- the distinction I need to make here is the rear axles were always SOLID; whatever happened to the left rear tire *did* have some effect on the right rear tire, and vice-versa.

  • Something that nobody seems to consider is that the bottom teams have had to deal with limited budgets the whole time. Not enforced by the FIA, but just because they literally didn't have the money. So when I hear teams like Ferrari or Mercedes or Red Bull cry about how much it costs to fix their car, there are teams on the grid where their entire budget doesn't go up to the FIA limit and hasn't for years... and those teams have been fixing and replacing their broken cars without crying about it.
