Have you ever wondered why Lewis Hamilton complains about tires after 50 miles while your tires can do over 50,000? How can road tires and F1 tires be so different? In this episode we dive into the the high stresses an F1 tire needs to withstand, the difference in the chemical composition of tires, and the incredibly precise engineering that goes into one of Formula 1's most controversial subjects, tire failure. If you like the smell of burnt rubber in the morning, this video is for you!

  • 16:26 YES it does. Undercut and overcut strategies go a long way in determining who wins the race. Pitstop timing will also come into play. When safety cars pull up, that's an opportunity for the racers and teams to change their strategy to get the optimum tire for the rest of the race. Weather changes like rain and dry also play a huge role in determining what tire strategy they are willing to choose. This opens up the grid and allows even the slower cars to race with the faster ones if they have proper strategy. They could do an undercut and get a harder compound to last the entire race, and in that way then can try and fend off the faster cars behind them at the end of the race, and if they can do that, that will be an amazing result and an amazing showcase of racing skills. And if you're in a faster car, you can do an overcut and pit in a bit later than others so that you can get into a softer compound for the rest of the race and chase every one up the field. And if you win the race doing that, it would also be an amazing result and showcase of racing skills. All these factors create opportunities for the entire grid to race with each other, and allows for unusual results, which makes it exciting.

  • The FIA tried "just letting them race" in 2005 when tire changes were banned, and the show was horrible. Passing was affected because the tires had to be made harder to last through qualifying, plus the entire race the next day. This led to less passing and risk taking, as drivers would be more worried about looking after their tires than going for opportunities.

    • And led the the dumpster fire that was the 2005 US Grand Prix where only 6 cars started because they were using Firestone tires that could last the whole race and the others were using Michelin tires that couldn't handle the high speed banked turn at the Indianapolis Speedway. It's a really big blemish on f1 especially here in the states.

      @misdemeanor61@misdemeanor613 жыл бұрын
    • Not an F1 watcher, but tire changes being banned isn't the same as allowing people to build better tires from what I understand. Nobody said F1 should ban tires, simply just allow them to engineer better tires for races without stops. It seems the technology exist, without the compromises you listed. IE, engineer a good tire but instead of it being 50 miles, let it be 100 or 200. If they can do it, then I seen no issue. Also, if they allow tire changes, if someone blows out, they can simply replace it. Obviously I'm not sure how that would impact race times, but you wouldn't have to be 'conservative' out of fear of blowing out. Now obviously with any change comes a shift in how the game is played, but I don't think it sounds like there is a downside that would result like the one you're listing. Seems like you're comparing 2 different scenarios. 1; Where racers had to make a tire last the entire race and drove fearfully. and, 2; Where people are asking them to allow for tires to be engineered to last longer, since there is 0 compromises and 50 miles is more dangerous than 100 for example.

      @ViolentMLG@ViolentMLG3 жыл бұрын
    • @@ViolentMLG the way the the current cars are built do not allow for easy passing as a trailing car loses massive amounts of downforce as they are trailing the leading car due to the way the aero in the cars work. This means that pit stops can deal a huge blow as other cars pass you while you are in the pits and now you have to drive harder to be able to pass and regain the positions lost. If tires are made to last an entire race, the drivers are just going to babysit their tires and simply defend their track position rather than try to overtake

      @lokeychomusuke@lokeychomusuke3 жыл бұрын
    • @@lokeychomusuke But if the tires were made to last the entire race, or even just a bit longer, wouldn't thay allow for a fight to the finish with every single car going all out? It seems like it'd be entertaining to watch. Same tyres/tires = no more babysitting and mainly focus on being first? If a tyre lasts the whole race, why babysit it? Go all out and keep as much distance as possible and race as best you can and try to keep P1. Like Violent said, 2 different scenarios.

    • @@misdemeanor61 that's only because the surface on Indy went through a process called "diamond grinding" where they grind off the top uneven layer of asphalt and put in little grooves that run parallel to the track to help with rain water and oil and stuff. Bridgestone had data on the track after its resurfacing through their Firestone branch that ran in IndyCar series at Indy unlike Michelin. F1 had a rule at the time that didn't allow testing for the tyres so Michelin was completely in the dark about how their tyres would react to the new surface while Bridgestone knew exactly how to build their tyres.

  • It's great to hear someone talking about Pirelli drawing the shortest draw. When other companies had the monopoly on tyres, like Goodyear in the '90s, they just put out the best tyres they could. Or, at the very least, a good tyre (like when they were forced to make grooved tyres). When Pirelli got the contract, they were forced to accept absurd rules, created by the FIA with no real need. Like "make the tire last only X laps! it will be more fun!" or "hey, next year we are increasing downforce and power, so you have to provide a new tire, that will degrade in X laps. But with no testing at all! It would be costly. And we want this to be a surprise for everyone! This will surely increase the spectacle with no risk at all!" (Silverstone 2013). Frankly, i'm surprised Pirelli is still in F1. Being in F1 has only damaged their reputation, and (largely) not by their fault.

Tires back then lasted much longer There also is no more tire war so its not necessarily the best tech, The 2000s era tires were faster despite being grooved than todays tires. Less degradation means less grip. More grip typically means less degradation. These tires also have to withstand the most stressful torque and lateral forces than just about any other race car.
