Can F1 Tires Make Your Road Car Faster?

We put Formula 1 Tires on a Toyota MR2 and SENT IT at a track to see if they make it faster. And yes, we had some issues along the way.

I put F1 Tyres on a Normal car to make it faster - and we’ve brought it to our racetrack to prove I’m right. Now we tried this on a racecar and it worked perfectly (Tescos clip), so we’re putting it on a road-legal 130 horsepower Toyota - because why not. More grip = more fast AND more safe. What could go wrong? Now you can’t deny his optimism, but you have to agree - he’s wrong. We tried this before and they had zero grip - we just couldn’t get them warm enough.

Looks like an overgrown RC Car.
With plastic Drifting Tires. Can't get the F1 Tires warm enough and don't have enough downforce.
Looks like a kart with a kids car body to me
Bro🤣🤣🤣
I mean that's an MR2 for ya

F1 teams really need to hire these guys! 3 sec a lap gained for only £11,000... imagine the improvements with the budget of an F1 team!
They were already hired. They are the reason for Ferrari's pace.

Would be interesting to see what happens if you just use the tyre warmers on the road tyres then go for a lap 🤔
You just broke the whole video.
What about embedding tirewarmers on the inside of the tires.
@@Loanshark753 That is a thing already on every car, It is called brakes. Brakes get very hot and dump that heat very fast, a lot of it goes through the wheel and heats the air in the tyre in turn heating the rubber.
This is a chaotic energy I didn't expect from the serious videos I saw initially. And I love it.
Early top gear 2.0?
@@big_fox48 grazie
funny how this channel is kind of like donut media
The fact they did this without a roll bar is insane haha
Now I wanna see the full wets, I think they should work at lower temperatures so they might be way better in a normal car lol
imho inters would do better if it's not really raining just damp at worst and ~15+ °C
Yep low temp racing tired makes way more sense
Yeah the big grooves would probably be good for a really rainy day
The video wouldn't be as funny though lol
yeah and they are softer so probably more grip
2022 gta car mods be like:
Fantastic! Down force/weight are also probably a huge factor to get the most of the tyres.
0:48 Can confirm, Large nuts and Digital Gas - Anal works brilliants when fitting a different wheel and tire setup.

Winner of a style/format you got here 100%
Cheers!
@@OVERDRIVE.studioscan you try toyota Corolla 2008 with f1 tire 2023 pls
Frankly I'm impressed that the tire didn't go flat when it was in the wheelwell
Channeling some TG vibes with the shenanigans, one liners, banter, and just overall bloke-ish reasoning XD I love it!
I would really enjoy longer cuts of these videos. There seems to be a lot of funny banter between shots
Just 11 grand for 3 seconds, F1 teams spend millions for a few tenths
Value for money!
🤣
LOL XD
Regular racing tires would have got him 5 seconds.
This channel has old Top gear vibes & im sooooooo here for it I’ve been waiting
Bro did the GTA glitch in real life
Getting Top Gear/Grand Tour vibes from this channel now. I really like the direction you guys are taking, keep it up!
*Car lover vibes
Would you be able to get the same 3 seconds with a properly sized set of racing tires that are up to temp? I know that's not the point just curious.
Not even racing tire. Just aggressive compound like Cup 2s or RE71rs.
Lol I think some ps4s’s could do it. Fun video though.
I'd say properly sized tires would get even better gains due to better stability and control
@@m1l3s27 I second this. I think your tire choices would be perfect if warmed up :)
Episode 2?
Good idea. I wish there was a racing sim where you could do that kind of experiments as well.
3 seconds doesn't sound like a lot but on a minute-and-a-half lap, it's a whole different performance class. If memory serves, that was about how much faster the last Viper ACR was against the same-year Z06 at Laguna Seca when tested by the Motor Trend guys. It translated to 12-13 seconds faster on the Nordschleife.
MR2 Spyder is an underrated car🤷♂️ With a couple body mods, some wheels, tires, and suspension it can actually look really nice.
Not underrated anymore. People now know they are very close to an Elise and they are selling of allot of money now

I'm here for this 2000s top gear energy, more of this please 🙏
Now I'm curious if you'd be able to keep the tires at temp without a massive amount of downforce
Videazo bro sigue asi y llegaras muy alto
I'm wondering if pressure was taking into account... Mr2 weights about 1180kg and has no downforce, F1 cars weighted arround 750kg when these tyres were used, but they produce up to 3750 kg of downforce which would put these tyres under a total of 4500 kg of force, actually increansing contact patch. So yeah, I think cold pressures should be way lower when installing these tyres in street cars to try to compensate to the lack of downforce so the contact patch is actually consisten with their real use case.
Also they should weld ginormous spoilers all over it.
The cold pressures were low for those tyres, 18psi all round
but that's the max downforce (high speed) where tyres don't matter they matter in mid& slow speed corners, traction
The 3rd gen mr2 weighs less than 1000 kilos
@@shingosshojiopoulos6608 Thank you was just about to comment this, 980kg if I’m not mistaken
Getting close to Top Gear type of comedy.
Scott’s energy is an mix of Ben and Jeremy
Three idiots and a hammer seems to be the secret formula
that may have been the first time in the world a group has wrapped a grown man in F1 tire warmers
Would be interesting to have seen what temperature you got the f1 tyres to. That way we can see how much of f1 downforce is in play vs tyre mechanical grip.
this could be literally an episode of top gear uk!
With all that new space cleared up, y'all better give that MR2 a damn good wheel setup
You could use wet tyres , they warm up faster
I thought pinks where better than purples, idk about how fast they warm up tho
These experimental car comparisons all over KZhead really grabs my attention!
Looking forward to full series
More of this please. There is a hole in our lives that can only be filled by guys doing silly stuff with cars, and that hole has been getting bigger the past few years. So I'd love if you filled my hole... No, sorry..
🤣 yes lol! And on that bombshell....
Back to the studio
“filled my hole” 🤨🤨🤨
Shit just went from zero to one hundred real quick. I mean, seriously.
i say this as a big car guy, and i know this might sounds cringe, but, the hole can only be filled with Jesus. trust me, he’s changed my life
In French MR2 actually sounds like "emmerdé" which means "pissed off" (as in annoyed).
I love this video. It has a very Top Gear vibe to it (Jeremy, Hammond, James).
Thats a pretty good choice in vehicle and stance too. The wheels have an extremely wide stance like F1, and it's mid engine. If it could sit lower it would be almost perfect
Man this is such great content coming from you guys. Been following y'all for close to a year now, even took a fundy course, great to see you guys pushing your development!
I was thinking about doing this to my MRS the other day. Glad to know someone else is thinking along the same lines.
Gosh this video must have taken so much work time and money to do. Can't imagine. That was entertaining, thanks.
You guys need to try this with the new 18" tires and wheels that bolt on the the hubs.
These types of videos suit you really well! More of this is great!
Ahh man, I love MR2's, this is sacrilege!... But damn entertaining! 🤣🤣
I love this energy, i thought it would go horribly but i loved it lmao.
The moment Scott showed tyre warmer blankets I immediately knew he was going to wrap someone in it for shits n giggles.

0:48 our camera man is the funniest guy in the world 😂
Hahahha when Scott started his bs about "so much grip..." loooool
Those tires are really good for snow, but DAMN good for heavy rain and ice!
Car was great, shenanigans were great, editing was great. Great video.
If YT wasn't better than TV nowadays, you guys should be the Top Gear hosts. A lot of Jeremy, Richard and James vibes on this segment hahahah
Great video!
You should try slapping a huge wing on it to get some downforce and some heat into them.
Considering this is like putting the hardest set of tires, plastic drifting tires, on an RC car, what tires would be like putting the Foam tires from a 1:12 scale pan car on a 1:1 automobile?
How about reducing the tire pressures to get a larger contact patch?
It needs a smaller contact patch!
That would increase rolling resistance.
I felt like I was watching a top gear episode, I mean this is perfect
This was awesome!
Everyone does need their own Richard.
awesome, now put a v10 in the mr2
Bro f1 merged in Real life

With this amount of effort into the new channel u guys are putting in its gonna be a good ride for sure. Got my sub on this one too.
god damn good video. great chemistry. huge
wow! great video guys
I think we need to see Callum do more driving to see how he manages.
I'd love to know more about these tires and where they came from. They could be 'show tires' which were never designed to be driven on. I suspect they are show tires because as far as i know Pirelli take race spec tires back and destroy them in order to protect trade secrets (and also say they recycle all used rubber because it's good PR). Or they may be race used which means they have less tread depth and wont have anywhere near as much grip as they should.
Correct, Pirelli takes back and destroys ALL f1 tires and have since around 2011. So, if this IS a set of actual F1 tires, and not a show or fake set, (which are exceedlingly rare) they are at least 13 years old and would be unlikely to perform anywhere near modern tires.
I wonder how much quicker it'd be with slicks designed for lower loads and more importantly a set that actually fit lol
When the aerodynamics actually keep those tires planted down on those light vehicles at high rates of speed FYI those vehicles don't supply or Dynamics like an F1
It's always interesting to try different stuff but F1 wheels are designed for a whole setup that goes in harmony with the car dimensions, aero, weight and other settings. Single F1 parts won't improve speed on normal cars simply because they are optimized for a specific setup and a specific car along with a specific course.
Like filling an unleaded grade car with premium gas
Scott is always so professional in the analysis and technical videos and here he just embodies an absolute shitter. Love it.
I would imagine having extreme amount of grip that your suspension isn’t built to handle would cause, grip issues lol
This man is doing F1 tire merge glitches in real life
Bro really just pulled off a real life Bennys merge
Whoever is editing these deserves a raise
Eis que você vicia em fazer carros pro mod no gta v online 😂😂😂
yep, definitely going to swap my mr2 wheels with f1 rims
seems we forgot something in the equation. the car itself. you cant just throw on sticky fat tyres on a car and expect it to drive like a race car. you're missing an important ingredient: being acclimated and accustomed to to its particular driving feel. short wheelbase rear wheel drive vehicles, especially ones with the majority of their mass located in the middle, regardless of their balance bias, have a tendancy to be very nimble, but to also oversteer and spin out, and as the mass is nearer the center rather than the extremeties, regardless of the front/rear balance bias, they spin out faster and more violently, and this makes it especially difficult to recover from oversteer, to the point you almost have to force it to oversteer the otherway if you can catch it in time just to straighten it out.
You are all mad, you know that, don’t you? Great video 🌞
It's a mystery to me that Drivetribe has >2M subscribers while this channel is only up to 160K subs so far. Admittedly, the Driver61 is pushing to wards 1M subs, but this channel is more fun, and absolutely more entertaining that Drivetribe. On the plus side, Social Blade estimates this channel makes proportionally more money than Drivetribe against subscriber numbers, so I am hoping this video might pay for itself. From us, the viewer's, point of view, I hope the channel does well because we want to see more videos.
This is awesome.
Would be interesting to see another comparison lap time with street tyres using same track width and similar rolling diameter to the F1 rubber
