Historians guess that concealed shoes in a wall originally served as magical charms to ward off witches, demons and ghosts.
Might want to put the shoes back in the wall when time comes ;-)
Yuppers! I would use that old hook in the house! And did you save some of the wallpaper to frame and bring the old past to the new !
Ahh I did not know this.
True. Old Worn shoes were the secret to getting them to ward off ill luck. Another thing hidden in walls were dead cats.
Or maybe it was just something people did to freak out whomever demoed the house in the future.
The piano man, we need to save it!!!! Why is nobody talking about this. Maybe sell it to a restoration or antique store.
Idk why im so invested in watching a stranger restore an abandoned cabin... But here I am loving every second of it. 😂
Right! I'm so hooked it's almost like a new tv series or me to watch haha
@@andrewmoran5721 yes!!
I’m totally sucked in as well lol!
@@karenwhitney3244 same here
The shoes authenticate the age of the home, that is cool you found them. It was an old tradition. I suggest the shoes go back in the wall, clearly they kept the home standing this long.
I agree, probably put some of my own back in the wall
FYI: That's not a cabin it's a small house. Believe it or not most people lived that way back in the day.
And if you want to know how old the house is my guess is 1910 by the look of the windows baseboards and outlet locations. If you find square nails from the 19th century I'm wrong but I don't think I am. 1910 is my guess.
And the thing you're examining at the 9:20 mark with the 1908 patent used to be a window shade before the shade fell off. Now it's just a spring loaded rod.
@@wsbill14224 there are square nails everywhere in there
Just a suggestion that would save you days worth of time. Lay down tarps as you tear out walls. Easy carry out and you clear as you destroy. Rather than destroy day then spend days trying to shovel out the pieces.
And work methodically, one wall at a time and haul out the debris at least after each wall.
I’m still wondering why would you tear down perfectly good plaster and lathe , just to put up sheet rock
@@Onteo1 As that plaster ages, the "lock" which is the plaster that squeezed through the gaps in the lathe, breaks off and leaves the plaster floating on the lathe. Its going to come down. And it is very expensive to replace (4-5 times the labor cost of drywall). And, there are very few people left that actually know how to lay on plaster.
@@scottsatterthwaite4073 yes this is true, but watching them remove it the plaster looked remarkably intact for the condition of the cabin.
@@Onteo1 It would surprise you. Think of all the hot-cold cycles it's been through for decades. Besides, getting down to the bare studs has a couple of advantages: it takes TONS of weight off the structure and it gives you a chance to find and fix structural issues without worrying about destroying fragile plaster walls. It also provides a clean slate for all new plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.
I'm so happy to see you wearing PPE while doing demo and not taking the new truck out until it's fixed and safe to drive. This channel is a gem. Found you recently through the cabin videos.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed watching this
need some glasses tho bet your eyes were dry in the morning
I was disturbed at the absence of eye protection. My late father, an ophthalmologist, said he sent his five children through college and grad school solely on fees earned saving the eyesight of laborers who failed to wear $2 safety googles. Please protect your vision with polycarbonate and UV coated googles.
I am impressed how this cabin stood the test of time where you can bring it back to life. What a job to demo it. Looking good. Love watching the progress. Keep up the good work.
I agree recently discovered this channel and been following the progress on this cabin. I'm glad someone is taking the time to give this old house some love and attention. Love to know the history of the house who originally built it and why it was abandoned.
It’s a testament to how good the old growth timber this was made out of when you consider that part of the foundation caved in and it didn’t collapse.
The coat hook is longer on top for a hat....back when men wore a hat :)
The ring that he showed at the very end looks like it was a steel crinoline ring (1850s to 1860s).
I really like your videos about your abandoned cabin. Can't wait to see more. Greetings from Germany.
Thanks great to hear from you guys around the world

@@lb798 very cool!
Bonjour du Québec, Canada 😊 Moi aussi j' aime bien vos vidéos !
Wow. Make sure you put the shoes back. Also, those shoes are pre-Victorian and sized for a kid, or very petite adult. A local library or historical society may be able to help in getting the age pinned down. No way 1990s. More like 1890s. Fantastic work!!
I know, 1990s was a joke.
@@99Projects oh..sorry.😁
that horseshoe will provide you with a good age. I dug up 20 in my home years back and i got some excellent info from a horse expert (incl that 1 shoe that was medieval... yes, i live in Europe)
Age sure, but not related to the house. That horseahoe could be from the 1700's and the house only being built 200 years later.
not a curtain rod but a pull down shade rod. I am loving the progress you are making. Demo is so fun to watch
Old brown shade...I remember!
Watching the metal detectorist reminded of the time i came across someone in the woods swinging a large sack full of scrap metal backwards and forwards ? Looking embarrassed they said " I've misplaced my metal detector ! "
A pair of hidden shoes also means that there are always two souls in the house looking after you !
I’m all about making the cabin livable again, but what I am NOT about is destroying all the charm by removing the historic moldings and trim. That stuff should be salvaged, reinstalled, and recreated as much as possible to pay respect to the age of the home!
@billymasoner3735 I agree with you with the old charm. I know its his house but why make it a boring grey on grey look
Agreed
the "rod" you found is from an old rollerblind that was used to pull down to cover the windows (Im that old).. great to see the progress, and cant wait to see the next edition.
It’s very easy and soothing to sit here and watch, but I appreciate the colossal amount of work that you’ve done!! Great job
You should clean up that coat hook and put it somewhere in the house. If its brass would look really cool. Also amazed how good the wood looks underneath. Seems like most of it is in good shape yet. Would love to see you pressure wash the shake siding to see if its still salvageable. Thank you again and can't wait until next episode.
Another hard working video 197-s truck looks great you cannot beat the old built stuff. 👍👍👍
Id turn that old piano into a bar...ive seen it done and they turn out so cool. Great job on this cabin....my dream is just that, an old cabin in the woods!
Really cool ,you and your buddy did quite the job on Demo. I did demo on houses in my younger years ,it's not easy so Hats off to you guys.
The two pieces you didn't know what they were, are part of a cast iron grate from a coal furnace. Enjoy your video! Lee
It’s really awesome that you’re keeping consistent with this project. I’m looking forward to seeing how you finish this. Keep up the good work, you’re doing great!
I hope you can raise the ceilings on the first floor. It would look awesome. 👌
I believe the rod to be a window blind roller. My Grandmother had some in her home. I could be incorrect. Great finds!
The round roller you found was from a window shade. I grew up in a house that was over a hundred years old. We had push but light switches. The house is long gone now.
Lot of work so far. I am very interseted in seeing how this Cabin turns out. Really enjoy the sped up parts with sounds...kind of soothing. I also enjoy how the videos are broken, into searching, dumps, fixing the truck and reno...sweet channel.
Thank you
I really hope you save that old piano.. i know its big and in the way and probably frustrating.. but even if it never works again.. cleaned up it will look really good when the place is finished.
It looks like it’s in Pretty good shape . It’s going to be a beautiful house I think .❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏
We love how you mixed in the metal detecting. Next time you demo lath and plaster, fine someone that burns pellets and have them save the bags. Pellet bags work awesome for disposal of lath and plaster.
Great video, luv the metal detecting. Hope the rehab retains some historical character. That dump truck sure came in handy....
Like how you switched from demo, to truck repair, to metal detecting and looped it all. Very cool. Can't wait to see #4!
That's some hard work! I've been in one of those old houses from the late 1800s early 1900s and I can practically smell the must of the dust.
Some interesting finds...that is an old blind...it will roll back up when you pull it
Watching this video is oddly satisfying. I miss Demo. This little cabin is gonna be great I think. Hope your saving the ceramic you take out. You fetch good money for ceramic light fixtures
Can't wait to see the results when this restoration is done. It is so interesting to watch the transformation.
It hurt my heart that you didnt cover that incredible piano during the demo, its so magical. I'm so loving watching this process, the fur baby is a huge bonus!!!
You guys did a LOT of work. It looks so good in there. Being a retired CDL trainer, I really appreciate how you made sure the safety and legal things on the truck were taken care of before going on the road. Great job! Stay safe and warm. God bless.
This is my favorite episode so far! A little of everything. Especially loved the metal detecting! I can't wait to see what you do with this existing layout.
And I keep being amazing by all the good wood that built the skeleton under all the paint & wallpaper crap. Sending you good waves & some warmth from France. 💙
Awesome. Thanks it’s cool to hear from you guys around the world
A lot of that ex-lath wood debris would have gone through a garden shredder and could then have been used as a mulch in wetter areas.
Good idea.
Great finds with metal detector. I loved the dump truck. Thank you for fixin the lights on truck.
Love these videos and can hardly eait for the next one. I bet the old window trim would look great great, stripped and restored, but it likely has lead paint. Great video today. You are a man with a vision!
Coming along. This reminded me of when we gutted the house I'm living in now. It was my grandmothers and she bought it 84 years ago and always told me it was an old wooden shack then, lol just a step above shack now, lol.
Cannot wait for the next instalment. Loving the journey....best wishes from South Yorkshire UK
Hello fellow South Yorks person. Its a great watch.
@@angiehaddington6462 oh 👋 where you at,I'm in Rotherham for my sins🤣
I was wanting to metal detect that house the first time you showed it to us. There has to be some cool treasures there.
Ok so im not the only one
Probably not. A long abandoned house and large area of land with other homes nearby, Others must have surely cleaned it out of goodies by now.
That truck is being held together by hopes, dreams, prayer and load bearing rust. Love this series btw!
Really good to watch and follow your progress! Im pretty sure that it was occupied a lot later than the 1920/30's though looking at the modern light fittings and switches?
Great video. Loving the cabin content. You made the right call with the dump rather than hauling it out little by little. With demo getting it out asap is the name of the game.
Metal Detecting Fun, the thing that looks a bit like a rake ( Cast Iron ? ) was probably the Coal Grate for the fireplace, at a guess. That Ford Dump truck I remember them from the 70's, Cheers.
I was thinking pieces to an ol radiator. looks like there was a plug in one.
@@getfixd2498 That "plug" was on the end of a coal stove grate so you could rock it to get the clinkers into the ash bin below.
Ahh I see, yeah not having it in your hands makes it hard for a Good Touchy Feely and closer examination, but that makes sense, Cheers. @@getfixd2498
Yeah…I can’t believe they didn’t any old buttons, Indian heads, or V nickels. Keep at it and they will turn up. Always do at places like that.
Nice truck.. All the best from Colorado USA.. 👍😎🇺🇸
The metal detecting was very smart. Getting any metal out is good for the future. The coat hanger and square nail, etc. Cool as heck!!! ❤
That little cabin has always been my dream home. What a lucky find!
If you want to zero in on when the house was last inhabited and it has an address, you can go to the local library and check the city/county directories. I have traced the history of several old houses in that way. You can also check the county deed records for a history of when the property changed hands over the years. Censuses are on line for free up until 1950, so if you find names of occupants, you may be able to find them in the censuses and maybe even be able to contact some of their descendants if you want to compile some history on the house. Real estate tax records may also be a possibility. The city/county historical society may also be able to help.
I’ve really enjoyed watching your process! I’d tuck a little downstairs bathroom under that staircase but that’s just me. Looking forward to the next one! ☮️
I enjoy seeing sweat equity builds. Taki g it down to the frame. Congrats
I’m really enjoying your videos from Colombia, South America. This is my favourite so far. The age of the house is evident given the lack of insulation. Brrrr.
Cool Beans on the artifacts found metal detecting. Most definitely save all the bits and bobs so they can be placed on display in the cabin. I would, if at all possible and practical, try to save the flooring in the room with the rotten subfloor. Can’t wait to see what you do in the next stage with the cabin.
Got to admit, stumbled across your abandoned cabin video's and fell in love.. Max is a gorgeous baby😁 Cant wait to see more on your house remodel and more of Max please😍
Oh the shoes and curtain rod were very cool. You could put those shoes in a shadow box to hang on the wall in the room they were found... keep some history inside. Hmm wonder why they put them in the wall. lol Love this series... excited to see more.
Thank you
Some put them in walls for Fertility blessing, they were almost always children's shoes
@@UpTheHarbour Others put those shoes in walls to ward off witches, demons and ghosts.. Old wives tale if you ask me..🤷♂️
Got a tarp to haul the lath to the burn barrel? Time saver! Jealous that you have a burn barrel! Had one in WNY!
Absolutely love these videos! I love how you jump back and forth to different things you are working on! Keep up the good work!
Helps keep the video interesting. Thank yoh
It all looks pretty solid no besides the floor cant wait to see how it turns out great job guys
Lots of ideas for that old piano.. Just google around and see what you might find😊
I would put the shoes in a photo frame and put it on the wall of the newly renovated home, so awesome 😊
keep up the good work and don't stop pushing
Thank you
This was a cool video. We like seeing the step by step cabin renovation project a lot. And the metal detecting and finds are interesting, as is seeing you purchase and work on/modify various equipment and tools to use on the cabin project. We are looking forward to seeing this whole cabin restoration series inside and outside as long as it goes. Good stuff!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
I always put a tarp down on the floor when pushing lath and plaster from the other side of the wall. It makes the cleanup a lot easier.
Awesome new video !!! Another great exemple of what hard work and dedication can accomplish !!!
I'm totally enjoying this series but I'm really stoked over watching your friend with his metal detector. I am sort of into that too but where I live , there's nothing left to find. Everything has been paved over. Stay away from So Cal. It's not fun anymore. If not for the weather, we'd be gone. Waaaaay too expensive here. Especially for us old folks. Thanks for the great entertainment. Loving it.
So much fun to watch!! I'm wishing you will save a bit of the wallpaper and later frame and hang it in the new kitchen. 😊
Great episode. Getting close to the end, so I'm starting to get excited to see the final reveal. God bless you all for doing what you're doing. You're bringing this quaint cabin back to it's glory. Now THAT'S amazing!!!!!!!!!!
I love how this is coming along..Can't wait to see how it's all going to come out..The solid structure of those old homes are virtually indestructible..As they say "don't build um like that anymore" Thanks for the entertainment.
Just discovered your channel and projects today, subscribed to check out the rest of your vids! Can't wait to see the progress over the next for months! Keep it up!
It's so satisfying to watch you work so hard and find cool stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing what the restoration and rebuild looks like. You guys are very resourceful.
It’s a pleasure to see somebody so resourceful and goal oriented! Great job by you and your cohorts. Plus it’s nice to watch somebody else working hard!😹
I just love hard work. I could watch it all day. Well done guys.
The next time you are demolishing plaster like on the first floor ceiling use a long 2x4 and it will be faster and easier. The little nails that hold the laft you can go over the wood a thousand times and you will still not get them all. God bless you and your family my friend
man i like old things from the past but watching you guys demo all that old plaster and wood of this cabin give me the heebie jeebies not going to lie, never know what you're going to find, like those people that found 100's of dollars behind a wall.😵💫
It’s so interest seeing this process. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the video…enjoyed the demo and cleanup…and the “Detectorist”. 😊
Awesome cabin and property find and buy to as we'll. That's wild it staid standing for all of those years to. It was we'll built back in those days with what materials that we're around to work with to for sure. Much more advanced materials now days to use though now.
watching all the way from Australia. currently 11:45pm 😂
Cool 😎
Nice to see a real person with a real budget doing real work. Nice job!
I appreciate that!
Great video. Look for the spot where the outhouse was you fined all kinds of stuff, Good luck and Stay Safe.
Funny how you fill the dump truck first and then fix it 😆 Great work on the house and everything around it. Loving it
Hello Can't wait til you make this cabin . Be safe friend 🌹🙏❤️
I would replace all the floors in the house just to be safe. But that’s expensive 😅. Love to see more episodes
Love seeing all the hand cut beams in this home. Great job! Show us the kitchen sink please.
43:18 Ha ha ha ha ha… “… and actually that subfloor and framing underneath is pretty rotted…”. While partner in crime plays dead piano on said floor…. Hope you restore the piano…
My goodness how tall are those ceilings? Or rather, how short? Great new vid. Love the metal detecting and truck!
I'm so happy you decided to do some metal detecting. I'm just sorry you didn't find much. That Coat Rack hook and cameo was kinda cool and the shoes in the wall was cool surprise too. You guys are doing a great job!!😊
The one time I took down lathe and plaster in a dusty old NY home, I used a plastic tote under and caught about 90% of the shit falling from the ceiling, worked great. Tote would fill up at the same moment my arms fatigued, then I would lug the tote to the dumpster, giving my arms/shoulders some time to recover and didn't have to stand in knee deep shards of wood and plaster.
This little cabin somewhat reminds me of the house I grew up in. It was a 1910 house, but it is a split level, and after many years of moving around and going our own ways, my mom moved in with a sister and my other sister moved into that house after Dad died. It was built for a man in a wheelchair. Everything is low - the counters, the cabinets, the light switches. My dad did some updates and stuff over the 30 years they lived there, but it was still, the ceilings were only 6'6", so still for a shorter person. I always joked with him, that that's why I'm so short. Like a goldfish, I was raised in a tiny house and grew up tiny 😂 my brother, who grew up elsewhere before I was born, is 6 ft. tall 😂 anyway, I like the charm of this little house ❤
Watching from Flordia and I’m enjoying everything about this . Can’t wait for the finish
Love the hand hewn beams and supports.
Hi from England, just enjoying watching the renovation and I think the two pieces of strange metal you found are part of an old fire grate, we had them in the farm house I grew up in and I remember my father throwing one out as it had split and broken in half. If I remember correctly he couldn’t repair it as it was cast iron and there wasn’t anyone local that could but that was 50 years ago but keep with it guys, good to see young men working hard and I think you’re an inspiration
Thank you, great to hear from people in other parts of the world
I don't know if it's been said but the 2 pieces you didn't know look like the grate from a fire. I love finding old things like these, it tells the story of what went on long before we were born.
I'm so glad you had your friend metal-detect the property! One of my bucket list items is to get permission to metal detect my great-grandparents former farm land just to see what I find.
That would be awesome
Thanks for sharing!
Hope you're keeping all the old light fixtures, sinks etc. Those would be great re-additions to the house!
