  • My Dad taught me everything I know about cars, house repairs/building, and "everything else you'll need to know so you don't need a man to do it for you". Dads that teach their kids how to do things for themselves are the greatest gift to our independence, and I can only offer my deepest condolences to you and your family's loss. I've been watching this series since your first video came across my feed, and I can't wait to see the house when it's finished.

  • So, the "supervisor's" name is Max? As a mason, I say you did fine. Foundation wall redo pours ALWAYS suck. You learned a couple things along the way. 1. Can't have too much bracing. 2. figure you have to under pin later. Other than that-all good. Pay no mind to keyboard contractors. Your doing way more with the cabin than I would have. I'da fixed it with a match. Losing dad sux. Give yourself time. Mine went home in '07. Still miss him, but I know i'll see him again. You may find yourself forgetting he's gone and starting to dial him up before remembering. That's normal too. It just means his son loves him very much. And yes, dad knows that even now. Your skill and perseverance are inspiring and a testimony to how he raised you. Be blessed. Jesus Rules!

  • I’m sorry for your loss. My daddy died 31 years ago & I think about all the things he taught me, mostly by observation, as he was a quiet man. I injured my back a week ago (assisting animal control rescue 2 pups that has been dumped in our neighborhood), & was ordered to take it easy. So, I went down the KZhead rabbit hole & discovered your renovation. Now I’m invested! Gotta see how it turns out! I did learn a new thing -there are gas powered mini-excavators with pull starts! Even my husband, who just retired from over 50 years as a dirt guy didn’t know they existed (he started when he was 16 & still in HS)!

You're such an inspiration to Zakkary and I really appreciate that. We hope you're doing well and can't wait for more of the little cabin videos. But in the mean time, we're watching the others as well. ( Just a reminder that we are your friends in Nebraska that emailed you a couple of times.) Thanks for all your hard work and we're looking forward to when you are getting closer to and closer to the end. We know it's A LOT of work, so we are being patient. Lots of hugs and prayers sent your way.

  • Looks like some metaphysical forces intervened to get you to use period correct methods to finish the new foundation wall. Cool to see the hybrid of old and new with the concrete blending into mortared fieldstone on the edges. Given the moss on them, that pile of stones is probably the remnants of an old fieldstone wall that divided farmland and was built well before your cabin was. Get your metal detecting buddy out there. You might find some cool relics by the wall like buttons, shoe buckles, coins and oxen shoes.

  • Man. So many whiny people in these comments. At the end of the day, it’s not any worse than the way they did it back when that first got built. So it’s ok. Just some thoughts for next time, as a guy who is currently studying construction inspection in college. It may be expensive, but shotcrete would get that wall flush to the base and would only need one form. They use it to line tunnels and overpasses for structural support. Overall, looks pretty good. Those field stone foundations are always so gorgeous. Any structural concerns could easily be addressed with a couple jack posts behind the foundation wall. I’m so sorry for your loss, the good ones always go too soon. I think he’d be really proud to see all you’re doing. Max is a very good boy :)

  • I'll be honest, I like that you ended up having to use the fieldstone. Pays homage to the original construction of the cabin

  • I think the field stone as an after thought was almost meant to be. It kept the look of the age of the home. Some times things that start off as mistakes turn into beautiful meant to be things. Sorry about the loss of your father, keep up these fun videos bro.

  • Yeah - would have, could have, should have with the forms and pour. It's a learning experience. But end of the day - it's 1000% better than what was there before and will last far longer than the original foundation. Looks like you're somewhere in Northern NY?
