The Fiery Darts of Indian Wells | Serena & Venus' Indian Wells Boycott

2021 ж. 29 Қаз.

Serena and Venus Williams boycotted the Indian Wells Masters tournament after much of the 15900 spectators were hostile towards them during the 2001 Women's Singles final. Serena refers to this incident as, "The Fiery Darts of Indian Wells", and sparked a discussion of racism in tennis.

I love how they jump at the chance to scream at how Serena is such a horrible player but don’t bat an eye at some of the others who have said and done much worse on and off the court. From being accused of being men, to being accused of taking PEDs, to being accused of game fixing these ladies have stood the test of time. The Williams sisters have been credited for ushering in a new age of tennis. That alone should be enough but of course the color of their skin will not be overlooked.

The world will have to do much worse to kill her, they might actually have to try now, because if she didn't buckle under this then death is the only silencer, as dark as that consolation is, I want to be that , just like her, a journey that could only be unimaginably difficult. That must be why there is only One Serena Williams.

  • I have just watched 4-slam winner Naomi Osaka cry through 2/3 of her match at Indian Wells because of what seems to have been a racist slur. She asked the chair umpire to tell the crowd off: that did not happen. At the end of the match, Naomi was allowed to address the crowd herself even though she lost and she encouraged them to take a look at what had happened to Venus and Serena. The on-court reporter laughed it off and said that surely, one single nasty comment could not outweigh 99.9% of supporters. That made me really angry. I wonder if that reporter would not feel his whole day was ruined if a single stranger spat in his face for no valid reason, even if everyone else was nice to him from dawn to dusk. I know I would. As Naomi was crying, the female commentator sounded sorry but also seemed to imply that the onus to do better and enjoy tennis was on the player and not on the crowd, which reminded me of how Naomi was said to be too sensitive to have a tennis career when she explained she wanted to skip press conferences because she is an introvert and suffers from anxiety. Many nasty comments were made, suggesting that she was not anxious when she took a stand for the Black Lives Matter movement, even though she had mentioned how nervous she was about it. Last but not least, when Naomi spoke up about BLM, people asked whether she was even black as if 1) mixed people could not identify as either (or both) of their ethnicities and 2) one had to be black to care. That brings me back to Serena: after that infamous US Open final which was not Serena's best moment, some papers caricatured Naomi as white and Serena as an ape-looking character. So even after 23 grand slam titles, even when the New York crowd is willing to unfairly boo a 20 year-old to support Serena, if she is not on her best behavior, newspapers still compare her to a gorilla. Things evolve but oh so slowly. Edit: turns out it was not a racist comment, just a nasty one. Still, players from the wrong community or country do seem to get a lot of those and the Tournaments can't seem to find a way to get spectators to behave respectfully.

    • So quick to assume racism. Neither of these two events were racism. If I spent 1000 dollars to attend a tournament against two stars who are also sisters, I would be pissed too if one of them stepped out like 5 minutes before. Doesn’t excuse any racist comments which are never acceptable, but there is also no proof or witness to that. Even if there were racist comments in this original match, it shouldn’t speak for anyone in the crowd other than the individual. Boo hoo Naomi woke up this morning in a big house with meals cooked for her. Some of us work really hard just to feed a dog

  • To come up in this sport the way she (and her sister) did, and to do what she did with her career, she will always be my favorite women’s player. This white guy definitely approves, but am thoroughly embarrassed for her treatment. I would have heard more about this in real time if it was more than just a one-off or maybe twice (I saw an article in the clip referencing “Wimbledon fixed?” despite it sounding like they played each other in that one (claiming one must have ragged it and let the other win). I know tournament draws/seeds are set, but you would think that if there was any real validity to this claim, that there would have been investigations or attempts to put some heat on the family, possibly publicly, if there was any validity to this theory. I will admit that I wasn’t following the sport all that close in the early 2000’s, aside from being enthralled with fellow American’s taking over of tennis (and Serena’s incredible serve). Id love some legitimate input from someone who worked in tennis or followed these events closely at the time, to tell me their opinions (obviously don’t answer if you’re racist or just don’t like them for any reason besides this situation..

  • Spectators at these tennis events are the majority of a certain demographics.. They're white, middle aged to senior citizens and often wealthy..That have been the reality of tennis since inception..It's an expensive sport and had it's period of exclusivity.. Basically! It was racially segregated..Like most of the sports disciplines of that period! Those spectators considered themselves privileged and think they could treat others as inferior..That mentality have not changed much especially with white people..Even with the rest of society moving beyond the color of a person's skin which don't access the content of anyone's character..White folks have retained their racists ideals of superiority by skin color..Such was what happened then with Serena and in recent months in School Basketball leagues, Soccer matches in Europe and the NBA with spectators ejected from games and banned for racism.. There's a shifting tide that's going to make white folks the world's minority in a few years and what they've done global to others on every continent some with mindless brutality and genocide, especially in Africa, Australia and North America! There's an understandable fear about retribution wherever they might go..

However, no one booed Alexander Zverev when he arrived at Indian Wells this year after cursing at an umpire and breaking a racket right next to his foot in a threatening manner. Just saw Serena's interview where she says she'd be in jail if she had done what he did. And Zverev was already under investigation for allegedly beating and choking his girlfriend onsite at three ATP events. The double standard is still on!

  • The opening words and content of this video make a strong factual case that what happened eventually the day of the final wasn’t racist. A stadium full of people most likely supportive of the sisters were informed 5 minutes before the match it wouldn’t happen. There was already much speculation throughout the press that their matches were fixed; this fed into that narrative. Additionally there was a lot of audio investigation into the crowd sounds and no racial language was found there. This was a tennis educated crowd expressing their displeasure for feeling taken and had by the situation. Cudos to Serena for maintaining strength to play and win against the pressure.

    • Using the standards of 2021, literally no person is perfect. Everyone deserves to be canceled and no one should be a role model. Look, people (especially tennis players, whose focus is on tennis alone) can take the best attributes of a person and apply it do their career/lives. Literally every person in existence has something negative about them, but what's the point focusing on that when you're trying to emulate something positive?

    • If you’re making the argument, it probably falls to you to provide the research. Unless you’re one of the people not doing their research. You DO have a really good command of English as a second language so I have to give you that. But your argument is clearly horseshit and Bret Easton Ellis is a jackass

  • It had nothing to do with racism. Fans wanted to see the sisters play one another, and got robbed. Those boos at the final were angry fans who knew the semi was thrown because of the father. Serena caught backlash because of her involvement. The few in crowd that used slurs were the few idiots that had nothing to do with the tournament or the venue. The narrative on this video has drummed up the racial angle and this was about SPORTSMANSHIP AND NOTHING MORE.

So by your standard, it’s okay for people to use those types of derogatory slurs because they have the “belief” that others were doing something immoral? That’s what’s fundamentally wrong with the institutions of racism within the world today! • If you weren’t so pathetic it would be funny. Serena hasn’t done a fourth of the things Graf and Court have done in their careers. Graf father paid to have Seles stab--that is the lowest of the low. Not once has Richard had anyone to be physically attacked. Court was a fanatical hypocritical “christian” who was a practicing lesbian but lied and married a man to keep her secret quiet. I love when you melanin free clowns try to discredit Serena and Venus who is credited with bringing in a new age of tennis and who have been credited as a great influence to countless others to even set foot on a tennis court. Keep being a disgusting person, it suits you. Serena will forever be the greatest. Even Evert says so.
