The Wimbledon crowd in the match against Watson was truly horrendous. They were essentially booing Serena for hitting the ball in the court.
It’s definitely hard to watch back and hasn’t aged well at all. They were highly disrespectful and it just felt as though there was an undercurrent of racism with the way they treated her.

This is such a good video. Anyone watching this could take so many lessons from it. Serena was able to rise above the pettiness and ignorance of the crowds and she didn’t let them get under her skin. Naomi couldn’t find the person who heckled her and so she felt powerless against their verbal assault. Everyone handles moments differently. I think Naomi at least addressed the incident and appealed to our better angels. Serena located the heckler and had them removed. Both ways are excellent ways to handle these moments.

I know she hasn't behaved well at times on court, but with these experiences coupled with the 2004 us open quarter finals, I think people should cut her some slack. @@amandacerny8145 As you can see, once we apply the ATP GOAT debate metrics to WTA, you can see that Serena is somewhere between #3 and #5 all time, depending on how much you value certain accomplishments. Fantastic player, but not the GOAT. She had the opportunity to be the GOAT by playing in the weakest era of all other GOAT candidates (going by ELO ratings), but the fact that she only won 73 titles and was not very committed to the tour outside the Slams for the majority of her career was very costly. She was never able to be as dominant or as consistent week in week out like Steffi and Martina and saw winning Slams as a shortcut to greatness. But there are no shortcuts if you want to be the GOAT. She simply wasn’t good enough. And that’s completely fine. Being in the top 5 all time is a historic achievement, but we mustn’t undervalue the achievements of other women who accomplished more than Serena just because of recency bias and because Serena is American.

She was zoned in and very sharp so everything was working at such an incredible level, therefore the action of the serve and visualising Justine’s raised hand coincided; they happened almost at the same time. And she couldn’t stop that action of the serve!! It was up to Justine to be good enough to own up to the raising of her hand ✋🏼 but she refused and the crowd being French and in Roland Garros didn’t help the situation and were not fair and Justine also went with it!!! The ‘Universe’ never forgave or forgot her behaviour and she bore the consequences by soon after developing a chronic immune system condition which affected her and ultimately caused her to retire from Tennis. You could see the sores on her lips whenever she played Serena. Serena on the other hand forgave Justine and had only good things to say about her!! That is the mark of someone with a good heart 🙏🏾❤️

The scene in France was disappointing. Serena would probably have won the match and even the tournament that year. People seem to push the idea that Serena does not like clay. But she is actually one of the few (men and women) who won Roland Garros 3 times. Till now only 12 have won Roland Garros at least 3 times.
Serena Williams is the best tennis player to ever play. No player male or female had to play under the conditions and adversities she had to and despite all the vitriol throughout her career she conquered. I wonder if any past and present male/female players could achieve what she has under the same circumstances. She is incomparable; I don't care what anybody says. She is talented, resilient, tenacious and strong of mind. A true legend!
You have to be a strong person to face all of the evil words that evil people had to say to the Williams sisters. They tried everything to get under their beautiful skin from cheating, name calling and etc. but it never stopped those young ladies from bringing their very best to the court and playing their best match each and every time. I have so much respect for them and this is why Serena deserves to be call the GOAT of tennis!

@@amandacerny8145 It can’t be a fact. In order for there to be a factual GOAT/ consensus GOAT, there would have to be a player who overwhelmingly towers above the rest in terms of statistics. There is no such player in either the ATP or WTA, therefore the GOAT debate is very much an open debate. Steffi has by far the strongest case for GOAT title though. Serena’s case is far weaker as she didn’t have as strong of a peak as Steffi and wasn’t nearly as dominant or as consistent. In fact, she lags considerably behind Navratilova and Court as well.

People go to events (sports, comedy, etc.) thinking it's an opportunity for them to express themselves. Find a hobby. Get good at it. And be less disruptive.
The media only focuses on Serena's few bad moments, but never focus on the bad behavior of the fans and players toward both sisters. I think this is a lesson Coco and Tiafoe need to learn. The same fans that are applauding them will turn on you when you become the dominant player of the sport, and being a person of color is even worse. We are still divided by race in the world, and unfortunately especially in America.

Both sisters have taken a lot of garbage over the years and have handled it in a mostly exemplary fashion. As you will note, the younger generation ( Naomi Osaka et. Al) do not have the steely reserve to brush off hate and prejudice as these women did. My admiration for both is immeasurable.

I cannot even imagine the racism she and Venus had to undergo. The ones we know about were terrible, imagine the ones we don’t. Serena and Venus are class acts and compared to how others have behaved on the court, she has been perfect. The only one that was questionable that I know of was the one against the woman ball caller.

As a person who has played sports, you have to drown the crowd out (in the mind) when they become the 3rd player (opponent)...when you start to win, you get the crowd out of the game, or they start cheering for you.

Plus they weren't faced with disgusting racial slurs many times- Indian wells and the time the ump had to eject a spectator saying insane things-just 2 mention 2 famous times... Not to mention, the American commentators at the beginning always cheering for her opponents. I got sick of thatcand either watched it on a foreign station or turned volumne off. I only watched tennis when I see these two beautiful black women playing. I found out that they were very exceptional players. They suffered a lot of racism, but they are the champions. Tennis will never be the same with out them. I do not watch the game anymore.
