A true great would not have choked all the finals she was in to match and beat that record). Like here, the 'I am retiring' speech was timed to ensure the crowd were even more partisan and on her side, helping put the opponent off. Williams in my view was a good and at times very good player but great she ain't and a role model for other kids she really, really is not.

    • it is absolutely terrible the way women's rights are baffled in the USA and where are the William sisters when it counts...where is the sports media when it counts...where is the WTA when to counts. • After not playing for 13 months and playing in only 2 warm-up tournaments and reaching this far in the US open unlike top seeds who didn't make it to the 3rd round Serena stills shows again why she is the GREATEST female tennis player. In hindsight the double match she played before the 3rd round loss sapped her of energy. With this performance at the US open Serena will be back!!!! And for those people who have ALWAYS wanted her to retire years ago including journalists why are you people not calling for the 45 year old TOM BRADY to retire from the NFL.

Look, I’m an American and of course I wanted Serena to win, and I think Serena does indeed deserve a little ceremony like that to commemorate all the amazing work she did for tennis! But Ajla beat her, and she stood up to a crowd that was entirely against her! Doesn’t she deserve at least the tiny respect of an on-court interview? Her treatment wasn’t fair. She worked so hard that round, and I’m proud of her too. And because Serena is a nice person, I’m sure she would agree with the both of us.
