  • These are squarely aimed at mine sites, the agri sector and government agencies. They will be taking these in bulk over vehicles like Hilux and Ranger. Well done Mr Toyota, very strategic. A few domestic customers are not Toyota's concern or target market.

    • yes,my understandin was the landcruiser was always made for the mines in aussie who are the biggest customers given their reliability and ruggedness.I recall Toyota not offering their 5 year warranty to mining companies due to the harsh conditions the landcruisers are used in.They dont last as much as any other usage in farms and outback.Think Toyota also had to add airbags too for updated insurance purposes in the mines.

    • Probably on the money with that comment, Toyota have to do something to claw back the market in those areas. I was working in the pilbra when the 75 series was phased out and the 79 introduced. Mining fleets completely changed to a mix of cruisers, rodeos, hiluxes etc as imho they were no longer a bolt together cab of the 75 series. And they're not as tough as they say they are lol, we destroyed a brand new 79 in a couple of months at Newman Mt whaleback as boilermakers towing a welder and the back loaded pulling up out of the compound ramp, it was that steep it was low range 1st and hold it flat. Thing was rooted after a couple of months😂😂

  • Not a Toyota guy myself, but the fact that Toyota did not try to put a bunch of Tech in the new 76 is most likely to help with reliability. I say this because a lot of new vehicles from all the manufacturers seem to have way too much tech out of the gate and yet have so many problems with the extra tech added. If there is anything I have learned with my old 1993 WD21 Pathfinder, it is that simplicity generally keeps things reliable.

V8 is going to the wind. Still, gotta love that roar😋 My 2003 Isuzu MUX/Rodeo has the power button and second start. The power button shortens the auto trans shift and increases rpm before shifting. Great for power offroad. The car has a touchy pedal, so the 2nd gear start is good in slick conditions. Nice review, Ronny!😊

  • Thanks for the intro Ronny! 2.8 in the LC doesn't sound right but: If the real world performance is on par with the on-paper figures, lack of performance should not feared then. Fuel consumption should be better and is a huge consideration for me. Apart from the obvious saving in cost, carrying less fuel on long back country trips etc is a big plus. 2.8 engine is relatively speaking much less complex and likely cheaper to maintain than the V8. Nothing can compare the the sound track of the V8 thou, especially the 4 pot! Something which will always be sad! Excited! 🍺

  • This new cruiser to me feels like an homage to the J40 in certain aspects but mainly the old school KZJ70 Prado, it's definitely a touching nod to how the Prado line up somewhat started with taking the 70series body and fitting little creature comforts (e.g power windows and automatic gearbox) with a still very capable engine on a smaller scale. Definitely a bonus for people that want to enter the "Full size" Cruiser scene without having to break their wallets (take that lightly😅). I for one am happy with the addition of the 2.8 into the line-up and a plus that Toyota didn't decide too discard the V8 means they definitely thought the engine choices through.

    • It's far better than people realise. Very efficient, & it actually does a decent job. The Auto actually shifts surprisingly smoothly .. Unfortunately we will lose the V8 Late in 2024 due to Euro 6 being mandated in Australia , & the the LC 300's V6 in a single turbo form is now probable to replace the V8. The 4 pot & V6 will be sold alongside eachother with the 2.8l being a few $$$$k cheaper . They finally started arriving into dealers about a month or so ago .

    • I am upset that the V8 will be discontinued purely because it was an entertaining engine that brought some modernised characteristic to the 70. But I guess that's how the cookies crumble in today's world. The V6 from the 300 will be a unit of an engine in something like the 70 and to watch a review on all 3 engine types in a comparison will be interesting to watch. I am somewhat disappointed that Toyota didn't correct the rear to stop it from crab walking on roads and fishtailing on sand but I believe they didn't really see that as a major flaw.

Had a 300. Hated it. Theres some dumb stuff eg position of the fuel filter and rear tailgate. With the new 2.8 70 out, i wanted to see if incould live with the 2.8 and auto so i bought an SR hilux. Frankly, i think toyota are taking the piss out of us. The 70 used to be an axe. It had one purpose. Now its a hilux with a live front axle that toyota couldnt be bothered to correct (track issue). You get a 1984 body with a softer bonnet etc etc. and its $20,000 more than the hilux. I dunno mate but seriously… am i enjoying my first hilux? Yes. Which models do I miss? The 80 with the wuad valve turbo and the 2006 70 with that beautiful 6 cyl. Lucky i have my 1979 fj45 with a genuine 112,000km on the clock to remind me of what a real landcruiser is. As one of your guests on the video said, time will tell whether the 2.8 four cylinder will work with this car. Throwing the auto gearbox into it will certainly open it up to a wider market but am not sure if that’ll be enough to offset the proportion of punters turned off it by the lack of a V8. Why on earth they still haven’t changed the wheel track issue is beyond comprehension but I’m very happy about the LED lights.

    • bingo. suspect the v8 will be a bees dick more thirsty, unloaded, as you say, but once theres some load on there and you tune it up, you're likely to fall outside the little turbo's range and not be able to feed in more boost without significant heat soak (best case) and be more susceptable to poor tuning. probably the WORST thing for the v8 is the silly highway revs. 3k rpm... the hilux runs close to 2k rpm, thats a lot less friction. Toyota should have fixed that years ago.

And also the V8 is so under tuned as you all would know by watching Ronnie's channel , you can safely get more power out of these V8's its just a shame that Toyota hasn't done that in the 70 series as the 200 series is twin turbo's that must produce more power than the single . Yes I understand it is more about the Torque factor with Diesels and the 70 being a more work off road vehicle than the 200 or 300 series, the automatic well 200 are only auto's why haven't they put that as a option for a V8 70 series. Is fuel economy a issue absolutely just look at how much a liter it is now and as history has shone us it is only going to keep going up so a more fuel efficient 70 would be much appreciated .

But on a diesel it is more about the torque factor than the HP that your going for that comes in at a lower rev range and with out trying to get into the other mechanicals involved like different cam shafts that will have a lot to do with it to . • Aircon is a comfort so anything on top of that is a bonus, well done Toyota for recognizing some of us just want a lower cost basic 4wd without all the bell's & whistles that is reliable and has a solid feel to it. I'm sure it will be a popular model, I for one like the Troopie.

  • I have no issue with the 2.8; with the DPF, on the other hand...🙈 For a global overlanding tourer, a DPF becomes a big issue anywhere outside of Australia, Europe & N. America... The quality of the diesel causes it to clog up. It's also an issue at high altitudes, where the thinner air prevents it from regenerating properly. While I don't condone removing it for in-country touring, it's a must if you plan on traveling internationally

    • In south africa when you do your drivers test you choose whether to use a manual or automatic. If you pass in an automatic car then your license restricts you to automatic vehicles only. If you pass in a manual car then you can drive both auto and manual vehicles 😅
