This phone surviving the durability test was impressive, but surviving the teardown as well, that's truly next level.
ngl, jerry just approved my future purchase of a flip 5. I was always hesitant before but this one looks damn promising!
It keeps getting better every year 😂
@@GH0STST4RSCR34MI will wait for Flip 9 😂
I think it's only because of the strong precise trustworthy loyal helpful friendly curteous kind obedient cheerful thrifty brave clean and reverant and not to mention super good looking JerryRigEverything. If it weren't for those traits, I don't know.
@@GH0STST4RSCR34M It's his own words 😂
How the flip phone was almost fully functional after the teardown is very impressive.
Even the main screen didn't have the strip from the razer

I've always been worried about the durability of my Flip5. But seeing this, although teardowns and durability tests can't be 100% correlated with real-world durability, does give me assurance as I also plan on using my Flip5 for many years to come. Great video.
I love innovation in tech industry, so it's a good thing some companies still care about innovation unlike apple with their HUGE innovations like USB C , always on display etc 😂
@aaaaaa-hh8cq Honestly, I had the same thoughts that the flipping won't be useful for me (I mainly bought the phone for the style and to try something new). But after, like, what is now three weeks, I find myself using the cover display a lot. Some days, I use the cover display more than the main display. The use I found for the cover display is by doing essential tasks like messaging, maps, food delivery, weather, and other apps that are useful for the day. Also, I noticed that the cover display holds me back from further diving deep down with phone usage, like suddenly opening TikTok, Instagram, and other time-wasting apps. People say the cover display has limited usage, which they find as a con, but for me, I found it as a pro. Lastly, the "flip" makes the phone easy to stand. So, when taking photos, I never ask for anyone to hold my phone to take a photo of me or us. I just simply flip the phone in an angle, and it stands on its own.
if their plastic screen didn't die to nails, i would be buying this phone - it's quite awesome
@DrDemolition unless you intentionally dig your nails into the screen you won't have a problem. And if you do dig your nails into a plastic screen what do you expect
@@joshsmith7521 i can't really treat my phone like a snowflake now can i? fucking sneeze wrong and boom, you got a dent in your screen LMAO.
Watching these teardowns, espacially for these foldables, makes you really apreciate the level of technology, smart engineering and clever space management that these companies have achieved so far We really seem to take these technologies for granted
Jerry not only did not break the flexible screen, but was able to fix it after completely disassembling the phone. Amazing!
I was about to argue but I then realized that he didn't break it but he only damaged it so it still works 👍

zack swapping from a standard phone to a foldable phone is kinda funny ngl
Never thought I’d see this day, especially with a foldable, which is considered more fragile

One of these flip phones surviving the tear down video is honestly one of the most impressive things I’ve seen on this channel.
My flip 3 gave me a solid 2 years. The last couple of months, the hinge wouldn't fully open, so it had a slight bend all the time. The screen had little micro cracks at the bend and was beaten up a bit. (No case, just a dbrand skin) I upgraded to the flip 5 last week and am very happy so far. Good luck with yours!
exactt same forcme rn for the zflip 3
Absolutely! It's mind-blowing to see how flip and fold phones have evolved with each generation. Can't wait to see what the future holds for these devices!
I wanted one for so long but knew the technology needed to cook for a bit longer. I'm very comfortable getting a new fold very soon.
@hyperdude54 I had a Fold 4 and liked it, but the narrow aspect ratio outer screen caused a lot of app issues. Traded it in for a Flip 5 and I love it. None of the issues I had before. If you go for a foldable go for a Flip unless you're comfortable going with a different phone that has a wider outer screen aspect ratio like the Pixel Fold.
@@LimeOnTheSide760yeah i was thinking weather to get the fold or flip really like how the the fold opens up to basically be a small tablet but i dont think i would use it much besides to watch youtube on i see most people having the fold however most people are recommending the flip still not sure which to get but ill probably wait untill the 6 come out and then get either the flip 6 or fold 6

this is literally the first time Zack has been able to carefully disassemble a foldable that I have seen. well done jerry 👍👍
That may have been the absolute best teardown ever. I am still trying to figure out how Zach reassembled that particular phone and it actually worked. Seemingly impossible more than most. On another note, does anyone else get concerned when Zach cuts away the screen (or back of the phone) with a razor blade with his fingers directly in line of an unfortunate slip of the blade? No worries I guess because he could always reconstruct a thumb or other finger and make it work as perfectly as most of the devices he tears down. 😂
as for cutting towards himself, that's something you get good at over time or cut urself so badly one time u learn to find a workaround. I've never that bad 'one time' and I hope he never does either. I learned watching others make a similar mistake I avoided it and even better hopefully for many merely hearing of possible danger they too can remain intact, smart, and safe.
He should be fine, his skin scratches at a level 6...with deeper grooves at a level 7, so the razor blade should have no effect.
😂😂@@DeLawrence97
If my thinking is correct, Jerry has cut himself before.
It’s always good to know that being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent are still necessary character traits for phone durability and tear downs. ! 👍😁👌
Crazy how the front cam actually worked. You're convincing me to switch to a flip phone haha
Of all the new phones that come out, The Z Flip has always been the one I want the most. Its design is ace.
Your teardown commentary is unique and creative. Thanks for the effort you make in making these fun and informative!

What impresses me most about the teardowns with each smartphone is the level of sophistication and engineering that goes into making these devices that we use every single day. Wild stuff! The most notable ones for me are the foldable screen, the hinge mechanism, and the battery arrangement.
I own the ZF4, & plan to keep it for another 2-3 years. It amazes me just how durable these folding phones have become. My phone looks & functions just fine, and it's used daily for work & play. I hope you enjoy the new Flip phone!
This teardown is so informative! Im still a bit annoyed that different build version exist with lower quality parts used whilst theyre still the same price. But thank youfor exposing it so thoroughly!
i am pretty sure those lower quality parts exist for markets that they need to sell at lower prices? kind of what they did with the exynos versions of phones.
@@dedasdude While I was considering getting myself a midrange Galaxy A model, I found it's quite the opposite. In India and China where phone manufacturer competition is much tougher at all price ranges, Samsung beefs up the specs to compete. Here in America they lower them because they can get away with it. This is less evident in the premium phones but the low- and mid-range models show it very clearly.
@@groundseronot quite, the cost cutting compensates for insane EU import taxes and tariffs
@@groundsero all phone manufacturers including Apple use different suppliers for different areas of the world for a variety of reasons

I'm also trying to move to an Android phone (most likely S23+) after being an iOS user for ~8 years (yes I'm deep down in the ecosystem so wish me luck :D). It's great to know that Samsung has put a bit more effort in favor of reparability.
I just switched from iphone x to z fold 4 depsite being 100% in the apple ecosystem. Worth the change 100%!!!!!!!!!
It's tough to go with just one product out of an ecosystem. You really need to switch everything.
Unfortunately switching laptop is not an option since I need macOS for my work. But other than that, I’m willing to give Galaxy buds a shot 👍
Bit the bullet and upgraded my suddenly demised (gravity, you bastard!) oneplus 6t to an s23 (nonplus, nonultra). Only annoying thing about it is the samsung bloatware that persistently beg to be updated even after I disabled them all.
I've been an android user my entire life back to the android icecream sandwich days, and I'm now considering going all in on the apple ecosystem for once. I'm getting a macbook air m1 from a friend and I think my next phone will be an iphone, probably one of the smaller ones (I'm trying to go into the digital minimalism concept) I will still keep an older android phone for the android apps that I already have, but I plan on using the iphone as the main device.
Wow David! I’ve literally been waiting for a video like this!! Thank you for all your time and hard work. This truly helped me
Great video! On my 3rd generation Flip now (Flip 3, Flip 4 and now Flip 5).. I have had screen failures but everything else has been rock solid.. love the format factor, the now larger Flex screen, and the wow factor
I'm soo excited Zach! You are a man's man. A harder, outdoorsy, rougher-than-most (at least of your viewers), tough worker. I have respect for you and what you do. I'm very curious to see how long this phone lasts in your pockets. I had a Fold 4 (RIP), that didn't make it past 9 months (I'm an IT Sys Admin with 3 young boys who get to play with it on occasion). Simply put, the inner screen protector needed replacing, and after 3 attempts of sending it to Samsung directly, they gave me a full refund. I've given them a second chance though, and am now sporting a Fold 5. Can't keep an addict down. Here's hoping we both have great experiences with our devices! (As a side note, I also picked up a 2023 Moto Razr + for one of my sons, so I'll be keeping tabs on it as well). I hope you and Mama and little one are doing well! ❤
I'm always surprised about how durable the Z Flips are! I'm on my third now. Flip 3, Flip 4, Flip 5 which is my daily phone now. The others are still working like new. Never had any problem. 👍💪

This speaks volumes. Do you know how far foldables have come to where jerry not only took one apart and put it back together with minimum fuss but to where hes convinced enough to daily drive one after having a note 10 plus for the last few years? I know the fold 5 didnt fare as well (so far so good in my hands) but it's saying something about foldables maybe being more ready for prime time than we thought.
I treat my phones also with no mercy, my flip 3 survived many drops and two toddlers for about 2 years. So I am excited to get the occasional update. Good luck jerry!
You are getting better disassembling folding phones! Maybe for the next one you can try using less aggressive plastic tools for the flexible display, like the edge of an old credit card sharpened with sand paper.
Got myself a Flip 5 as well. Praying it lasts 4 years as well. The tear down and durability tests give me hope
I enjoyed the Boy Scout Law reference! 9:31
Hey Jerry, if u are worried about the durability I can say that my flip3 has suprised me alot. I have had it for around 2 years now with no issues, it still runs really well and I have really put it to the test by taking it to the beach and in water numerous times without any damage occuring.
Thank you so much for great explanation and your time my brother i'm always enjoying hearing your amazing voice 🎉
Loved hearing the Boy Scout Law. It was a nice transition into it too. Had a good chuckle hearing it after so many years.

Hah, as a scout I didn't expect that bit near the end. Fantastic that the phone mostly survived, heres to 4 years of folds Zach!
I love watching your videos I was on the fence about upgrading my 4 year old iphone to the z flip 5 but after your videos I think I will upgrade. Thank you very much for your Awesome videos.
You videos are hilarious, entertaining and helpful! Love this channel.
Very curious to see how the inner screen holds up to his wear and tear. That is by far my biggest concern. I’m hoping for a full 4 years!
Im interested because after being obsessed with the Note series I just became obsessed with the Flip 5 as my work device also
What do you work as? If it's heavy duty idk if it's that durable
I will also be taking this journey with you and using a zlip5 for the next few years! Its arriving today and im super excited.
Your videos are awesome. Thank you for doing them.
I bought the Flip5 after a few weeks of hemming and hawwing. It doesn't have as good a camera as my old phone, and the battery is smaller, but this time around I was mostly interested in the novelty and a chance to try and new less bulky form factor, and boy am I glad I did. The screen and hinge durability is a concern though, and I kinda expect this phone to not last much longer than two years with regular and a little careless use, as is normal for humans. I hope next year's model isn't just a minor upgrade on the old model. These phones would be perfect with a bigger battery and more competent camera. I really don't wanna carry around a giant phone-slate in my pocket anymore after experiencing this.
2:30 ...a delicate touch 😂😅🤣
Man, you are the boss, thanks for this teardown, was able to see my phone opened and confirm batteries are Li-Ion and not Li-Pro💪🏾

I'll look forward to you seeing the results of your extended durability test of the Flip. It's a fascinating phone, but I remain unconvinced it'd survive well enough.
as a person who's had the 2, the 3, the 4 and now the 5, you are correct. I know it's not going to last. It barely lasts a year, but I just trade it in every year.
@@thenerdshowWhat did you do with them? I've had my 4 for a year and it's still mint.
I was using my Note 8 from 2017 until last month. I thought about a flip phone but was concerned about how long it would last. Will be interesting to see what you get out of yours. Hopefully a lot. I would like my next phone to be a flip in another 6 years.
It's a long plan.
I still use my Note 8, it's showing signs of wear and tear (especially the battery and the screen) but still works well enough. Hopefully my next phone (when the Note 8 finally gives up) will last at least as long
I like my flip 5 it has his disadvantages and advantages like you got to be real careful with this phone scratches on the screen stick on the screen protector
I doubt the screen will last 4 years. Odds are no matter how careful you are with it, it will delaminate
@@TheGrejp I was planning on keeping it until it died. I recently got hearing aids with Bluetooth. Unfortunately they don’t work with anything that is not at least a Note 10 So I got the Ultra 23

My wife has been carrying a Z-Flip 3 and me a Z-Fold 3 since shortly after they came out and I could scarf them up on the secondary market from iPhone users who couldn't process the switch to Android. We love them both. My screen factory screen protector started getting bubbles under it long ago and was removed. My wife's factory screen protector has started to release at the fold on each side and it will seen be removed as well. Kudos for the Boy Scout Law reference @9:31!
Curious to see how it goes. I've been wanting to try one. If it had slightly better cameras I maybe would have bought one already.
9:50 did the pixles un-unalive themselves?
Thank you for doing the durability test on the screen without the screen protector 🙌 I haven't seen anyone else do it and I took mine off day 1 on both the 4 and the 5 so I was genuinely interested (though I did anticipate the same as you found). One benefit besides the obvious of being much smoother is the repeated folding: I've seen a lot of Folds/Flips start to bubble and get dust between the screen and screen protector after a few months of folding, even have seen more than one get hairline splinters as a result, but my Flip 4 was flawless and I have the use-time of a 13 year old girl on my phone. Much appreciated, Zach, and nice work on this one
I don't know that I saw any warnings saying you can't take it off anymore but oddly the Flip 5 screen protector came off REALLY easily, far less anxiety inducing than the 4 or like on prior models it could damage the screen it was literally designed to not be peeled off. I live dangerously I guess, idk.
this is hella cool, the flip5 looks like a really cool phone but felt like it could break with the slightest fall i like to keep my phone long term and am considering it, this was a great test to watch, thanks dude
I'd like to think a lot of phone companies expedited their pull tabs for batteries partly due to your videos Jerry. Great work being a positive influence for recycling. Still love my dbrand case too! Enjoy your new phone
Ah, I was hoping you'd commit to the Fairphone due to its environmental positives. Also thanks for peeling off the screen protector to see the level of damage underneath, that is very useful!
No fairphone in NA :(
i mean he did say if the Flip 5 survived the test, he'd switch to it. he's just committing to the bit.
The fairphone is unusable as a day to day phone lol. He would literally rather go back to the note 10 as it's a better phone even tho it's 4 years old
After the Backstory with his shattered screen from the Doorstep (which leaves him rushing to repair it becaus of Buissness Reasons) he said, he wants a Phone with multipe screens to keep it functional at a minimum if something like that ever happens again. im not a fan of Flip Phones but this is a fair point he makes here.

Just get the S23 Ultra. Way more durable, has better cameras and longer battery life. That Z Flip will last 1 year tops, 2 years if you're really lucky.
Well, using my flip3 right now, watching this video agree with you. I have owned this phone for just over two years. I think I got some miracles.
My mom almost pulled the trigger on buying this, thankfully my (recently‐deceased) dad left his S23 Ultra behind and she settled for that instead. She is planning on selling her S22 Ultra btw
it's not that fragile, plus the design on the flip is way more beautiful
I think s23 ultra is very huge so I dont like it but s23 has comfortable ergonomic design on the other hand cameras of the s23 ultra better than camera of the s23
Apple is better in my opinion

Thanks Zack. I wanted to migrate to a foldable phone but I wasn't sure. This helps a lot.
Very surprised to not see you on the Fairphone considering you also enjoy longevity and this goes towards that.. Even MORE surprised to see you pick any kind of folding display as this goes directly against that.

I've had my s9 plus for almost 5 years and I love it. I'm long overdue for an upgrade. I hope this z flip is a good option. My last flip phone was from Verizon, an LG VX8300. This was a personal favorite of mine
Best part is that Jerry reassembled that phone( and even is working) after disassembling completely
Zack never disappoint to rig everything
flip phones back then were wild. fashionable, even. their designs were so wildly different that it was fun just comparing phones' designs. not really the same now but still, it gives an oddly nostalgic feeling
I miss the scratch test, but the fingernail joke made up for it. Love your work! I'm still on my LG G6 waiting for you to tear down a phone I like enough to upgrade.
Hey zach! Just thought id make a suggestion, with the durability tests i would add in a heat gun screen discolouration test, like the lighter test. Would be quite helpful i think!
Hey zach i have been a fan of you and i also follow ur path where i am using samsung note 10 for 4 years and i also want to change my phone and i am looking forward to zflip 5 thank you for being so helpfull by giving us knowledge
I was going to switch to this too but I can't get over the plastic screen that scratches and dents easily do I opted for the s23 ultra I trade my Note 20 in and it reduced the piece to 500$ so that was the best decision I've made. the integrated s pen the super clear and bright display and amazing camera. plus the battery lasts forever and charged almost fully in 30 min. it prob won't happen any time soon but until they somehow make real glass foldable, I won't be getting any flip phone. still the z flip and cold are amazing in their own right , like you are for doing all these tests for us. Keep it up
You probably get this all the time but you've got such an awesome voice, I'd pay good money for some audio books read by yourself lol. Keep up the great work!
