    • Catherine O I know me and my partner nearly choked on our dessert....when we saw that hook....I have two weighty chandeliers but not as big as that one and they are hung on the equivalent of a crane hook.😂 I couldn't watch....I hope they have managed to change it out... but hats off to the carrying down the stairs palaver and then up the ladder...it was as bad as watching someone cross NiAgra falls on a tight rope in a hurricane xxx

  • This was a stressful one to watch but CONGRATULATIONS on getting that beautiful chandelier hooked up! Isn't it missing a few ampoules?? What an octopus of wires!! Yes, I would use sticky tape to identify all the wires...beautiful job! You guys are so funny! Love it! Traditionally, the red paint used as a primer for gilding is called red bole or clay bole. It remains a bit tacky and helps the gold leaf to adhere to it. It also give the gold a deep. rich gold colour. Once the gold is applied, the gold is burnished with an agate stone to make it smooth. But it doesn't matter because your work looks rustic and beautiful. Great job!

Makes us wonder about the workers of old, that didn't have the same glues, and who knows about paper-thin gold leaves. And still their work lasted for decades/centuries. What formidable wealth of knowledge has been lost...

  • I was so incredibly happy to have come across your channel in the suggested section. Because I watch Stephanie and all the others channels. It is so good that you use, 'Little Greene', paint. They have such a good values and ethics behind their company. I absolutely love love love your renovations. Especially in the rooms where Stephanie and Marie stayed over. It's so nice to see impeccable taste in your choices. You both have such good down to earth personalities. Which is good. I look forward to seeing you both visit Stephanie's chateau. I agree with the others about the S hook. About the mirror - Apparently they put the rabbits glue on top of the red bole /clay. They picked up the gold leaf with a very thin but wide bristle brush. Then lay it down onto a special kind of pad. Then, cut the gold leaf with a bluntish special type knife. Gently placed the leaf on top of the rabbits glue. Then used the crystal stick to burnish the gold. It makes it incredibly shiny like a mirror gold like the frames. But to make it look antique they used another liquid type that I can't remember. On top. The old ingredients for water gilding from the 19th century. Was glue made from rabbits collagen in their skin /hide. With the 'red bole', made from clay. I only know this because I looked into it for my future furniture art. As I want to do it in the old 19th century methods. But (without) the horrible rabbits glue from the collagen in their skin. There is lots of videos of people using that method on old gold frames. They even use another method to make the gilding look antiqued. I hope that helps. I really enjoy your vlogs. Keep it going x

  • Red Clay Bole is usually the standard color for applying gold leaf. Bole needs to be applied with rabbit skin glue solution. The red color beneath the gold leaf assimilates through the leaf. Red Bole accentuates and ‘warms’ yellow gold. When burnished, the rich creamy bole gives the gold leaf a lustrous shine. (according to Iconography Supplies)

  • Hello, I don’t want to be a know-it-all, but a couple of tips. When removing masking tape it tends to pluck the edges of paint UNLESS you pull it down over itself, not like you did, but pull it very flat down over itself, not out and away from the wall. Not sure if gold leaf behaves this way. Also gold leaf is usually lifted on a soft brush, and in a room with every door and window closed so no draughts. It looks great.

  • After a spooky kind of incident the other night in my home, I too suggest a stronger hook. I was reading and my better half was asleep and I heard this dreadful crash. I thought the bedroom window had cracked or an animal (wallaby or possum) had hit it. No trace of cracks, no further sounds; I ran around like a headless chook for a while! Next morning all was revealed; the wardrobe railing had crashed down leaving all our clothes sitting on the floor! Save yourselves the cost and angst; go stronger! The hooks of the railing were straight; they were meant to be hooks! I’m enjoying this content; loved you including your husbands ruse! We have to keep the integrity, don’t we, regards, Susan From Hobart.
