Factorio Review - an Indie Masterpiece

Factorio is one of the all-time highest rated games on steam , and yet many people dismiss it as being an overly complicated automation game. But it's so much more. And in my opinion, everyone should give it a shot. I promise, it's not as overwhelming as you think.
This Factorio review explains, from the bottom up, why Factorio is fun, what the Factorio gameplay looks like, how it flows and feels and what kind of difficulty curve you can expect. I also go over the multiplayer and Factorio mods to further highlight the enormous replayability Factorio has.
As mentioned in the video, if you want to try the Factorio gameplay for yourself, I recommend you download the demo (link below) and play through the tutorial/campaign. It's free after all!

As for the next video, still undecided. May go with Deathloop, another Paradox game or maybe Mechwarrior 5. Have other suggestions? Do let me know, very happy to listen to audience wishes!

    • In the "learning curve" section, one may have the impression that if, by any chance, biters eat up a chunk of your factory (or even the whole of it), less pollution will be produced, so...less attacks, etc. (The aggression will go down) Of course, no going back on biters' evolution; it's forward only. Another thing I think is why Factorio is so addictive is that every mistake, every design, every fixed mistake is much like a player's signature. So you play it long enough, you'll have 'your signature' everywhere on the map you've explored.

    • @@morienbendinelli1554 Thanks for the comment Morien! You're right that with biter evolution there is no going back, however you can absolutely have reduced attacks if you stop producing as much. It will take a bit of time to have an impact as pollution takes a while to move around the map, but if biters don't get pollution they can't spawn new units and therefore can't attack you as much! I agree with Factorio's addictiveness. It's so cool that there's so many valid ways to play the game, and even the mistakes feel "charming"! The big sense of ownership definitely keeps me going back for more.

    • Factorio is basically an allegory to life: you trade your time for a marginal increase in productivity (basically school/training). After that, you trade another bit of time for another bit of productivity. This cycle never ends, and every increase/expansion only serves to fuel further growth. Gotta love them positive reinforcing loops

  • The fact that there is a free demo which actually teaches you how to play the game before you pay for it is the kind of thing that every game used to do but no one does anymore. Games used to focus on the player's experience, factorio is one of those games.

    • I really like that. It's such a consumer friendly way of seeing whether games are good for you. I suppose with Steam's 2h refund window you can get a similar thing, but I always liked that demos are often more custom-tailored to convey to you what the game is like. Always excited when there's demos for games on steam! That steam festival where a bunch of games had demos available was really cool. I discovered many new games that way!

    • Hi Emil, my pleasure! You should check out Factorio's public server browser and find a map/server running "BiterBattles" by "ComfyFactory". Two teams with identical resource patches are split by water. Both teams play the normal factorio game, get attacked by biters etc. In addition to researching tech, science can be used to make the enemy team's biters stronger. It's played with randoms so don't expect crazy good coordination, but still people join the server and just do something they think makes sense. Expand mining, improve production, work on defenses etc. Still a bunch of people coming together to build a factory and fight the enemy team. I know the map has it's source code online on github so you could probably host your own server with friends as well, but the public server is actually quite frequented/played (as are all maps by ComfyFactory), so there's almost always a match going when you want to play BiterBattles! Let me know how you like it :)

  • Now that I’ve played it I can understand how it’s deeply complex but doesn’t overwhelm you with a start. I’m playing small and keeping my factory small because I’m playing without tutorials and kind of just experimenting with different systems I’ve been paying only for two days. And I’m finding it just very interesting How little impact the bugs have on where I am currently. But once I start to really ramp up production I know they’re going to come. So I get to basically choose when the difficulty ramps up while I am experimenting with factory designs. It’s genius.

  • Trains are a surprisingly meaty part of the game that I didn't quite understand and therefore sparsely used in my first playthrough (where I used mostly belts and drones). Once you understand rail signals it's a whole new game where you can spend 20 hours iterating over rail intersection blueprints. There's some people out there with smelting operations that require multiple 40 wagon trains on constant loop just for the iron ore I highly recommend the LTN mod to add another dimension to the trains system

  • This game is literally the "Play it YOUR way" kind of style I love. Want a challenge? Crank up enemy spawns! Make Items more expansive! Spread resources further apart! Make the world only a few tiles tall but infinite in a single direction! Mod the heck out of it! The documentation is the **Chefs Kiss** perfect example of well documentated features of stuff in the game. There's even content in the game that isn't actually used, but is their for modders to take advantage of. This is the type of game that the developers take into consideration the community. They have gone out of their way to fix BUGS for MODDERS! And the weekly blog posts that go into extreme intricate detail about the game and what challenges they faced trying to solve an issue, whether it was gameplay, a bug, performance, or even stuff both in and out of the game. My favorite is the fact the Expansion is being worked on with of the folks being the creator of the large Space Exploration mod, so you get on the blogs perspective of what it was like on the Community Modding API side and the actual codebase side and how they had to tackle problems with how they wanted to solve with the expansion and the lessons learned from their modding experience. The blogs are a fantastic read, like it's a nice thing to sit down and read and just be amazed at what problems and solutions they experienced before during and after developement.

    • @Josh, since items on belts move in a straight line it was not as hard as I first imagined. I made a "crosshair" so I could track the middle of the video, then tracked an item's position when it gets dropped on a belt, then just before a curve or when it gets grabbed. My editing software (davinci resolve) then interpolated the positions over time and I had smooth item tracking! For curves or when items got moved by inserters or splitters I did it frame by frame. All in all it took a few hours to make that intro bit, but to me it wasn't thaaat much work considering the quality of the outcome :)

    @RukashuBR@RukashuBR Жыл бұрын
    • I feel you. Sometimes it's good to start over with a new save and apply all that you have learned to make it cleaner and easier to expand. Factorio forces you to learn "one step at a time" to not get overwhelmed with things. I have ADHD so I have issues prioritizing things and sometimes feel extremely overwhelmed in Factorio, but I've learned to look at the thing I want to make (e.g. gray science), calculate how many resources of each input I need (and write it down), then I build the assembling machines for the item (e.g. gray science) and put belts there with inserters to feed and output. Then I slowly connect what I can to this. When I then move on to an item I still have to make for gray science I just repeat the above process! It's a step-by-step guide and it helps me avoid being too overwhelmed. Maybe something similar works for you? That being said, having a base where you have space to build and a mainbus to easily access resources makes a huge difference (hence the: maybe start over and build a cleaner base approach).
