Fix ABS with Remanufacturing: Edd China's Workshop Diaries Ep 61
You know when a mate drops their car off, chucks you the keys and says "can you fix my ABS"? Well, the answer is yes, using remanufacturing, and in this case I get ACtronics to do the clever fixing stuff in their hi-tech facility.

It is a re upload of an old video.
@@solidsnakesimulation666No it isn't.
@@LKBRICKS1993yes it is.
@@phillipgreen5550oh my god more re***ds, its a re upload if a old video and it's been edited, you're clearly not a fan.
Thank you Edd. Note to video editing dept. Please lower volume of filler music to at least the same level or a bit less than the spoken audio on the video. This example has it excessively loud in comparison. Change nothing else. Edd is awesome.
I was just about to make the same comment that you left, then I saw yours. I totally agree with you on the music when Ed is not talking, its far to loud and spoils the content. Please folks, adjust that music volume, its far too loud and spoils the video..
I would actually say that the music SUCKS! Who would listen to that on purpose? Not me. I killed the sound and started to skip to the end of the video. Not apologizing, just the facts.
Totally agree. A common fault on lots of videos. Almost certainly caused by mixing using a VU meter instead of the basic earhole.
too high bass component ,otherwise all good
Love the magnetic gloves that "pick up" the bolts
Great to see you back Edd doing what Edd does best. Long may it last.
Thanks, next episode will be Range Rover chassis…
Welcome back Edd. We missed you.
@@phildunne2632 old video but re edited
@@eddchinaHasn't it rusted away completely by now?! 😂
WELCOME BACK EDD. ACTronics' setup is absolutely mindblowing.
Can't help feeling like £1500 is pure price gouging - no way was that module worth such a significant fraction of the total new car cost, outrageous money. Great that there are firms out there that can actually fix things rather than just binning things off for no good reason. Bravo to Actronics.
Bravo indeed!!
Two ways to get spares for vehicles that have been around for a long time - one is that at the end of the car's production, have the OEM make many more than required, buy them, and store them in a well controlled warehouse for years - and then discard the ones that don't end up sold after storing them for a decade or two. The other is to get someone to spin up a production line for a small run. Neither of these options are cheap - I can see them needing to get - after retail markups - £1500 for the ones they sell to make the whole thing work. Fixing ones as they fail is a very good idea - but you need a decent thoughput to pay for the setup, and you also need the fault to not be an Application-Specific IC, or even just a more generic part that goes end-of-life, that is unavailable.
Such a part is probably not that often needed, and by the time it's needed the car isn't worth much, so the owner will likely opt to get one off a scrapyard (looks like on ebay you can get one for around £100 or less), so even at a reasonable price of a few hundred quid, most people will opt for a used part on something not likely to fail. So then you have very small market, and as outlined above, to supply these years later costs lots. It's a shame companies like this don't offer a service to the individual though, plenty of competent mechanics who don't want to be 'stitched up on the labour rate'.
20 years ago when I worked at a company manufacturing ABS units for the big car manufacturers the sale price to the VM was less than £100 for the whole ABS unit. £1500 is quite a markup.
@eddchina best wishes 😊 hope you're well
Great to see Edd back again! - Lovin' the magnetic fingers Edd! Also its easy to see why cars like this get scrapped off so easily - if you don't know how (or where to send the part) to fix it - as a new replacement part is more than the value of the car.
old video not new
Thanks, first try doing whole edit (locked the production pixies in the boot)! Remanufacturing really does modern classics will stay out of the scrapper for much longer!
ACtronics’ bit in the middle has been around since COVID but believe me, I only just finished this 3 hours ago!!
Edd don't mention that word COVID,,,3 weeks and am still suffering it's worse than trying too drive a car without any petrol 😢
@@jameswalker7459haha 3 weeks ? Try having it for 11 months.
We need more companies like this, so many cars and parts get scrapped nowadays due to part unavailability.
Good to see you back, sir. It's good to know the companies like ACTronics exist. I drive a 2002 car and the ABS module for models with traction control is no longer available, so it's nice to know there's a potential repair option.
Nice process ACtronics have there, considering what they do, investment in their equipment etc, around £200 is a decent price.
Absolutely, those robots and pick and place machines can’t be cheap.
@@eddchinaunless they buy broken ones and get them refurbished.
finally, a genuinely new car video. thanks Ed, you've really been missed
The place that remanufactures your controller, wow that is one top notch work station
Nice to see you back Edd, I hope you're back into the swing of things again soon. We've missed you!!!
Edd, we love you! Welcome back old chap. Thanks for a great new video and hope for many more to come. Take care
Thank you, much appreciated.

Glad I didn't give up on this channel, wonderful to see something new. Please keep this going, it means a lot more than you might realize
very good video. well presented and narrated through out. Thanks for taking the time to produce
Appreciate the appreciation! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching.
I've used ECU Testing for ABS module and dash repairs for years. Excellent service.
That background music- OMG!
Great wasn’t it?! Ok, I’ll sort the mix for the next video!
Nice one Edd. My better half has a white 14 plate Fiesta too so hopefully I'll never need to do the same but good to know this shouldn't cost thousands to sort if it goes wrong.
You would be surprised at what a new ABS module costs. For my Pug, it was £350 brand new. The same ABS module but fitted in an Audi was £1400. Software will be slightly different which prevents you from fitting one to the other... but shows what markup these parts are sold at!!
Hello Mr China. Im so happy to see new material from you! I hope this is the start of plenty more to come 🙏👍
He's alive! excellent episode welcome back sir and your never guess what my fiesta doing this started just 3 days ago 😂😂😂

To be fair, this is basically an ad for ACtronics’s services but still cool to see Edd back at again. And, ACtronics look like a seriously high tech outfit, with all that specialised machinery. Looking forward to the next episode with more Range Rover content!
Thanks, got to pay the bills somehow but without remanufacturing our modern classics might be scrap way too early. Next episode will indeed be on the Range Rover chassis…
I see it as a mutually beneficial thing. I learned something. They get their name out. No-one loses, so why complain?

So good to see you back Ed really missed you and what's happening with the Range Rover I think the last thing after you finished welding was sending it to be galvanized best regards Andy Allen.
It would have been nice to know what the actual fault was with the unit. The video showed the technician at acTronics removing the main microcontroller off the pcb using a hot air gun...and a lot of very cool automated test equipment...don't get me wrong very impressive setup but very light on the details as to what actually went wrong. How did actronics diagnose the fault and effect a repair...
That is kinda the point ACTronics is not directly accessible by us DIY guys. So this video was kinda a filler advert.
there is a closure in the chip and the chip is replaced with a new one so that who works
Yeah, either the main chip itself was faulty or it was the soldering where the pins attach to he PCB that was faulty, is what I gather from video.
The part Remanufactured in the video was actually from VAG vehicle but I thought it gave a great impression of the process involved!
You never know, they might open up to the public one day but for now if you can tame a friendly service point they might let you do some of the work to save even more cash keeping your modern classic on the road…
Mister Edd, it is always a pleasure to see you. Nice work you do, you have my respect.

such a clean vehicle. they never come apart that easily here in the midwest US.
That's an especially clean example in the UK, UK cars probably match similar conditions to Midwest US cars in terms of rust.

Good to see you back Edd, im glad you are well 👍👍
So pleased to have you back. Hope you had a refreshing break!
Not exactly but I have got stuff done (including other bits of filming and some excellent procrastination too)
@@eddchina Procrastination about the bush always good especially with cake!
I had Opel/Vauxhall Vectra B that had similar issues with ABS. I fixed it by removing the electronics from unit, opening it and reflowing everything with flux and heatgun. Worked flawlessly since that moment until 4 years later car went to scrapyard because of rust.
Great fix, it’s amazing how dry solder joints can bugger stuff up so easily (that and failed tant capacitors)!
@@eddchina opel's had issues with dry solder cracks, everything else was fine. It was the common issue and reflow was common fix. :)
Well...since the lead free solder need to be use, much more faults specially a BGA parts.I only have the basic equippment as the pro rework station starting from 20-30 K Eur.

The capital investment represented by that facility and the processes suggests that those devices are a steady stream of malfunctions. You don't go to that kind of effort for one-off problems.
You don’t, and thank goodness they have so we can keep our modern classics on the road!
I’m stunned they seemed to magically know what chip to replace and actually had one. The leads were too small for me to think that was a simple solenoid driver. Doubt the one repaired in video was Edd’s as when boxed it was bolted to a pump assembly, which Edd didn’t send.
Great to have you back!

You might be the first to notice out loud! Thanks for watching (closely)!
Great work edd, the re manufactured part saves so much money and could be the difference between the car being scrapped or saved .
Great vid and nice to see you back on it 👍
This remanufacturing process is great for those parts that you either can’t get brand new at all or are prohibitively expensive at the main dealership; case in point, the ABS control module for my 2006 Buick Lucerne, which is an American Full Size Sedan (it’s considered an Executive Saloon in the UK, equivalent to a BMW 5 Series or a Mercedes E Class)is still available at the main dealer for over $400US because they made 3 different part numbers of that module because they had 2 vastly different brake systems depending on trim level and engine choice (V6 or V8; the V8 models and the top trim got Stability Control and Brake Assist while the V6 models only got traction control) EDIT: I visited their website and apparently they can do Instrument clusters, HVAC Control Heads and Engine ECUs too!
Yes EDD! Welcome BACK :)
Great to see you back Edd, it's thanks to spanner wizards like you that companies such as ACTronics keep on keeping on. Not everything has to end up in the bin. Until next time 👍🏼

EXCELENT!! back to fixing cars. Thanks Edd.
Great to see you back Edd. The shots from behind the ABS module gave me flashbacks to one of the few times I attempted to work on my own car. Bolts did fall down the engine bay, then my phone, which I was using as a torch so I could retrieve them, followed. Managed to get the phone back, but a set of cooking tongs had to be sacrificed in the process. The stress! Need more practice and less arthritis, clearly!
