Actually they are not bathing. They are soaking up water to take to their nests for their chicks.

Yes they do if people would quit fucking with other people
Ikr, they are like parrots, they are so energetic 😂
Wow, hummingbirds are very territorial, I’m surprised they are all so calm in such a large group, really cool footage
While they’re territorial over their food source, they’re obviously very different with the abundant water source(which they only need for keeping clean), just like most territorial animals, will tolerate others, when they’re at salt licks and/or clay/earth patches which they rely upon for minerals and antitoxins……….
I'm also impressed at seeing such fast animals be so still for once. It's nice to properly observe hummingbirds
That's because it's their Spring Break. The aviary Fort Lauderdale :D
It's agreeable orgy fest of hummingbird
My parents had a bird fountain that was about twice its size, it could hold over a dozen finches with another two dozen sitting on the fence waiting there turn....or one very territorial hummingbird.
It's good to know that somewhere in the world a few hummingbirds are having a pool party.
Yes . Here in India . I saw more sparrows when i was in 9th 10th grade . And hundreds of Cranes go home from North to South across my house at 5 pm .Now if i saw a sparrow , i amuse that one is still alive !

😂😂the first time I saw one I screamed terrified. Then someone laughed & said it's a hummingbird & it landed on the tree branch about the cliff we were standing on in the woods & I was amazed he just sat there feathered up & watched us😂😂
Most of them are nervously coming and going but a couple of them are really chilling. What a treat to see. Never thought that many of them could tolerate being together like this.
Same here, it was odd seeing hummers this chill. I'm guessing because it's not a food source and just a chill spot, it's not *quite* as competitive. There's one hummer sitting in the water near the top-left and he hardly moved the entire video 😅
It may have been a particularly dry/hot spell of weather so they're tolerating each other for the sake of getting water.
The ones chillin are prob the locals.
@@ismayb754 They have to bathe often as I learned. It makes sense, since they go inside flowers often getting nectar & pollen on their feathers. A larger bird may not affect so much, but the hummers are so tiny!
It's so cool!!!
this has to be a world record or something. i have never seen more than 2 hummingbirds in 1 place
i've had up to 30, for a few weeks at a time, when they start flying south for the winter. this year, however... i have one bird. all the crap they are spraying in the clouds seem to be taking a toll on their little tiny bodies. makes me so sad. i also have friends who have anywhere from 10-50 birds at one time eating at their feeders. and i have more feeders (5 to their 1) out than they do. must be something to do with their location?
Elizabeth Young so very beautiful to watch. I see a Few at my bird feeder.
You are right - hanging out in groups attracts their predators - hence they prefer to fly solo !

Not to long ago here in Hallsville TX, I had humming birds hit my glass window, I went out and 2 of them were laying on the concrete patio floor. One of them got up and flew away the other did not I lifted the bird up on my table , I went and got sugar water I had from the hummingbird water feeder,he took a zip and about a minute took off. It hanged around and would fly to my other window and watched me in my dinning room, first I saw it, how still he was suspended on air, just so beautiful. I did buy stickers for my windows so they don’t hit it again.

It's interesting that these all appear to be male Allen's Hummingbirds,, which are fiercely territorial and seldom number more than a few individuals in any given area. I'd guess that this location is on a migration route at a time of year when mostly males are migrating, perhaps ahead of the females so that they can establish a territories before the girls arrive... Anyway, it's nice to see them more-or-less getting along when they'd normally be fighting like mad dogs!
You are correct, these are all male Allen’s Hummingbirds. When these group-bathing events take place, there seems to be a method to the madness. It always starts with male Allen’s, then at some point male Anna’s move-in and take over, then it’s female Allen’s turn and finally female Anna’s Hummingbirds have a wash. When hummingbirds in this area are bathing in smaller numbers, less segregation (sex and species) takes place. You are also correct that for the most part, Allen’s Hummingbirds are a migratory species of hummingbird. But there is one segment of the population that has always been a resident to the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. Now there is another non-migratory group of Allen’s Hummingbirds expanding in the Los Angeles Basin. It is not well understood if this “new” population (about 35 years old) started with the Channel Island birds or if some of the coastal migratory birds simply decided to stay put in the L.A. area. DNA testing is now taking place to determine which is the case. So, to comment to your comment directly, the birds you see in the video are part of the now resident Los Angeles population. They fight all day long around the feeders but apparently are fine with sharing a water resource with each other.
Really fascinating. Thanks for the information. Very interesting about the hierarchy between species and genders.
Fascinating. I've been watching/feeding/filming/studying the birds here in the Santa Clarita valley (about 22 miles inland) for 20+ years and have noticed that there has been a resident population of Allen's Hummingbirds here for at least the past ten years. Certain identifiable females are here year-round while the population noticeably increases in early spring with new individuals either arriving or just passing through. Interestingly, the "new" males that appear in spring are usually more brown/tan (although they all still have some green) than the winter males. Those which remain in winter have a lot of green on their backs. Since Rufous and Allen's almost certainly interbreed where they overlap, it makes me wonder if the migratory instinct comes from the Rufous genes while the resident tendency comes from the Allen's. Some genetic data would be most interesting. I've also noticed that the birds tend to fight a lot less (even at nectar sources) when there are a LOT of birds present. It appears that when in large numbers it's simply overwhelming and a waste of effort to try and defend the feeder, so they just tolerate each other as best they can. The gender and species-specific grouping I've never observed or even heard of before, although we have nowhere near the number of males (or birds in general) as seen in these pool party videos. I will definitely have to put out a bathing facility and see what happens! Thanks for the great info!
The feeders probably make it possible for them to become resident population.
JCMegabyte , I saw a documentary once where this 1 species of humming bird was alive ONLY because somewhere deep in the middle of nowhere on their migratory trip someone in some random tiny country puts up tons of feeders. Thousands of birds stop there after a trip across open water. Without that place they would die of starvation. I always remembered that and it brought me joy to see their fragility and strength.
Now THIS is the kind of quality content I come to KZhead for 👌🏼

@@susanmcdonald-timms3202 He meant that hawks are gonna eat the small birds
@@susanmcdonald-timms3202 Hello, please listen to leq in the comment above. With the price of eggs going up, everyone and their mom is getting chickens, even if you live in town. I know two people that I work with that have them and three people on my street have them as well. The Falcons and Hawks are thick with them trying to get at the chickens and they will take out the birds in your bath. Best to not set up feeders and put what ever bath you are going to set up under cover somehow so that the hawks have a harder time swooping in from above. Birds get plenty of food with out feeders, there are literally bugs everywhere. It is convenient to set at your table, look out your window and see the birds at your feeder, but it is better to get some binoculars and just look up into the trees around your house, you will see plenty of birds if there are trees nearby. Cheers.

Target51 If there are that many hummers in one back yard, then they are eating (or drinking) the owner's bird feeders to exhaustion! The feeders must take gallons of sugar water a day. they need tough love, they need to go do what they were meant to do: suck nectar from flowers, not feeders.
