  • Wednesday I was sweeping the floor of the machine shop where I work when someone said a dead hummingbird was on the floor. I swept it into my dust bucket. But I thought I saw some movement so I pulled it out and held it in my right hand. It blinked. I began to pull off the cobwebs that had ended its flight. First I got its eyes free then started on one that wrapped it wings. As soon as it could move its wings it shot out of my hand and flew up to the ceiling. It was an event that lasted only moments but will be with me forever.

    • How did you get it off the ceiling? I have them get inside my great room vaulted ceiling where I can't reach them; all they do is keep hitting the ceiling and staying right up against it. They eventually tire and come down but where I never know; I don't have time to spend hours waiting for them to come down. I find them weeks later, dead. If they do come down while I'm watching they take off so fast I can't catch them. So all I can do is be sure to keep the outside doors closed because it's a death sentence if they get inside.

  • My wife and I have been feeding Hummingbird’s for 40 years. The amount of Hummingbird’s varies from year to year. Each Hummingbird has their own personality. If we forget to put out the feeders in the beginning of the season one of the Hummingbirds will tap on the window where we are sitting to let us know they have arrived and want food.

  • I just adore these little guys. And 'bold' isn't the word. They're truly fearless. They'll spot a bumblebee from a hundred yards off raiding their stash and chase them off, it's so funny. After becoming friends with them, they'll jump right onto your hand to drink or get a goodie. They'll sit on a dish right in front of you while you shower them, it's so adorable. I would leave the window open in my house. My house was filled with tropical plants and flowers. I kept a growing colony of fruit flies in among the plants and flowers, and boy do they gobble them up. Hummers would fly in and spend the day in that room. Their little nests are fabulous and beautiful little creations. I also had pools of fish in there so it all may have been a bit too humid for a Sonoran desert bird, but they all sure seemed to like it in there. I kinda was hoping that one of them would choose some places in there to build a nest; what a fabulous experience it'd be to watch them build those very precise little architectures. Their nectar needs to be very carefully formulated to maintain their health. The tiniest of Hummers is a bird so tiny it's really hard to believe. I mean insect size, literally. The little things will challenge anything bigger that bugs-em You'll see the little dive-bombers perch on some branch, and dart back and forth into a cloud of Mayflies, snatching up one after another. If you invite them with a feeder or something else that appeals to them you'll be treated to some of the more uncommon varieties. It looks like their beaks are just these long tube-like things, but there not. They open their beaks like any other bird, it's just that their beaks (and that long little transparent tongue) are modified to reach deep into flowers. It's so funny to see them perch right next to you and just once-in-a-while glance at you, as if you were just some tree or a fencepost. Their eggs are like little perals. Their nests are so dainty they'll use spider webbing as part of it's construction. They are truly jewels of the sky.

    • Found the neighbors cat with something under a 8 foot tall bush in my driveway. The cat had a baby bird, no feathers at all, The cat seing me jammed, I picked up the baby, Yes I Do No Not 2 Do That But, .....It's a Baby! In the rose bushes a bird was yelling like an alarm. It was the Hummingbird Mommy. Found the little nest about 5 foot up the tree the baby was under, Put it back in the nest Hoping after the cats mouth and my hand Mommy doesn't reject it. Came back slowly 30 min. later and mommy was in her nest but now everyday I hear the mommy yelling like the alarm and when I go out, the cat is right there! I guess I did what I can but Mother Nature is going to do what it's going to do and it's not like I can set up camp in the driveway till it can fly. As posting this the mommy has called again and had to go chase the dam cat! ........Again!!🤨

    • I have a feeder on a hanger off my patio. They will fly in and land on the hanger and stare at my patio door until I come out and change the water in the feeder. Recently I bought some flowers that they supposedly like and put them below the feeder and they weren’t feeding on the flowers. So I moved the feeder close to the patio door down on the cement, hoping they would go to the flowers. They just got pissed off and came at my head and went over to feeder on the ground by my door-which wasn’t where they wanted it to be lol

    • Yes they do. I have a bunch in my yard from putting out just 6 feeders. It was time to take them down to clean them. I brought the first one back out and one almost landed on it (while holding it by hand for them) but another one dive bombed him and they both flew off fighting. A few of them will hover over my head looking down at me when I sit under the feeders to watch them.

I clean them every other feeding so mold doesnt build up. there are probably 30 birds here in the morning and seems even more n the evening. One day we were gone and came home to empty feeders and no birds. I filled the feeders and within minutes, they all came back. we have 5 kinds here, Annas, Broadtailed, Rufus, Calliope and Black chinned. One curious thing - I have a planter with gorgeous red Nasturtiums right by the feeders, but hummers dont seem to go to them?

I was telling a neighbor across the street about it and she told me “as you were telling me that there was a hummingbird hovering not far behind you!” These are my favorite birds even more so than the desert quails that live in the area, but both are fascinating critters to watch. ❤️❤️ Thank you for all the information on them.

She layed 2 eggs and I had the privilege of watching her feed once they hatched. The nest itself was amazing to see so up close. I even have a Video of one of the birds when it flew away. It was a gift from God to get to watch for about three weeks the part of her journey from nest building , watching for an egg, waiting for them to hatch, feeding and sadly when the two flew away.

    • @@gordonkarre6364 you don't spend much time in nature with the wildlife, do you? I had 2 greenhouses, multiple gardens and an orchard. My main companions were the hummingbirds and my dogs. The hummingbirds were very communicative and would let me know when their feeders were empty. A couple of them also liked to surprise me and "stalk" me. They can be little tricksters too. They are extremely territorial so I made sure to provide them with multiple feeders to avoid any conflict over food. The couples would fly around together untill their eggs were lain and hatched. Then I would see them individually feeding and flying around. They took turns watching over their children, and we're extremely dedicated parents. I knew each bird in my yard by their behavior and markings, and yes, the same couples returned to my yard year after year. This is such a hard reality for humans to face, but when animals are not stressed and abused they behave differently than how zookeepers and hunters claim they do. Not everyone is a whore😹🚬 We can't say that about most humans anymore, can we?....the ones that engage in unnatural behavior including sodomy and adultery are facing the reality that their behavior causes imbalance and leaves children without the sincere Love and care they need. Children have divine rights. So do our animal friends. If we don't respect the lives of all SINCERELY LOVING KIND-HEARTED BEINGS, we can't really expect mother nature to respect our lives, now can we?

    • @@christinecallanan8389 I most definitely spend a lot of time in nature and the outdoors. I am also an ornithologist and spend most of my time researching and observing birds and their behaviors. I also have hummingbirds in my back yard all year long and see many species of them in Arizona. So please try not to assume anything about me and my knowledge. All I am saying, is that without scientific verifiable data, one cannot assume that same pairs return every year. In fact, hummingbirds do not mate for life. Males will breed with a female and move on and look for other females. Rufous Hummingbirds migrate 2500 miles from Mexico to Canada and Alaska. Once the females arrive after the males, then breeding males will mate and leave the females on their own for the incubation and raising of the young. Many males will start migrating back to Mexico as early as July. If you can band and recapture and release on a yearly basis and document your findings, then you will have provided scientific data.

The worst threat to the animal "kingdom" is humans who claim they are behave like Babylonians, when they are in fact VERY loving and loyal to their mates and families. Sodomy is very rare in Nature, and not desirable at all, since it is really a perverted version of a NATURAL act, but it's the new "normal" according to the perverts in power. I don't have to ban and capture innocent brings to prove something natural that can easily be observed. Well I learned "the heck with my hanging fucia". They would buzz me when ever I took the feeders down for cleaning. Sometimes they would line up 6+ on my wire.
