One Hour Battle with a Giant Mako Shark - 4K

I was invited to go saltwater fishing with my buddies Jarred and Scott in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of St. Petersburg, Florida. The overall goal was to go fishing for snappers. After several hours of fishing, a giant school of blackfin tuna schooled up at our boat. The tuna fishing was off the charts with non-stop bites. While I was fighting my second tuna of the day, Chill noticed a massive dorsal fin coming towards the boat, it was a giant mako shark! I quickly got the shark rod ready and tossed our a blackfin tuna for bait. It didn't take long for that mako shark to find my tuna. After swallowing the tuna, the mako shark took off, peeling hundreds of yards of line off my reel. The shark then made an enormous jump and everybody on the boat went crazy, screaming and hollering. This was my first ever mako shark experience while fishing offshore. This is one the rarest species of sharks to catch in Florida.

  • Thank you so much ! this is the first recording that almost reminds minds me of my only fishing adventure off the coast of Manzanillo Mexico. Mine gave me just as much and similar fight except the crew of 3 managed to rope it and drag it backwards, on the side of the boat. This was 1976 Jan. We wanted Blue Marlin or Sword Fish, but this younger 6 ft 200 lb adolescent short fin Mako was running deep and fast. We gave the carcass to the natives, and the next morning it was almost clean and all I have are a few tiny teeth. Thanks For the Memories.

If you read these comments, what was the last run of line from the main line to the hook? I'm sorta shocked you've not caught a spinner before. We get a decent amount of them in the Carolinas and you're right, they get called blackcaps all the time. Good show...I always look forward to getting the notification.
