Queensland Snake Catcher Has Close Call With Red-Bellied Black Snake
Stuart McKenzie of the Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers had a close call with a venomous red-bellied black snake in Yandina, Queensland.
This footage shows the Queensland catcher opening the rat trap the snake is in, then grabbing it by the tail. The snake then lunges at him several times. “That was about four inches from my face,” McKenzie says in the video.
He posted the footage to Facebook with the comment, “For a very warm snake he was staying relatively calm, but as soon as I lifted him off the ground to bag him up, he flew up straight at my face. Just shows you have to be ready for anything in our job!”
The red-bellied black snake is one of the most common snakes on the east coast of Australia. There are no recorded cases of human fatality from a bite by a red-bellied black snake, but its venom does cause nausea, vomiting, and other unpleasant symptoms.

Why is everything so beautiful so dangerous? Snakes, Sharks, Lightning, Women.
really good beers and whiskey need to be added to your list ;-)
Women ?? 😂😂😂😂
@@honorablemanager7100 you must not be married
@@700bond700 you don’t have to be married 😂
@@furnituredoneright6375 true, but I think some of the married ones can be a little more venomous.
He was very nervous right at the beginning before even the snake was found. Even experts get scared. Venomous snakes are scary.
Word has it that the snake actually put that rat trap there and was just checking it when that guy interrupted him.
Close call. One time in a workers cottage on my parents farm a cranky oversized brown snake made it into the laundry and Dad went in there with his Browning A5 12gauge semi auto shotgun and laid waste to the cabinets washing machine tiles and snake . I was about 7 at the time and the report and shockwave was unbelievably loud in that small room and total over kill with a shotgun but that was in prob mid 80’s back then it was ok to blow away most of a laundry to remove one snake. There are still pellet marks in the tiles 30yrs later :) utter but quality and hilarious madness.
I run across these two or three times a week on my property during the season. Never experienced one as aggressive as that. But then again I never pick them up, just walk around them.
Being caged in the rat trap probably for hours and all in the bright sun light I'd say that snake was completely overheated. Would explain the reaction of the snake trying to get away as soon as possible only to notice its held back again by something seemingly a predator. Snake doesn't know this bloke came to the rescue.
@@wernerpoeschl0510 Precisely, snake was trying to flee before being grabbed.
Not aggressive, just defensive towards the potential "predator" Stuart McKenzie.
@@wernerpoeschl0510 Definitely would be a major factor, also generally speaking the further north you go the more defensive RBBs get. Queensland snakes are a lot less timid than ones in southern NSW
@@Mulgah really? Wow, didn't know that there are differences in the behaviour based on where you find the RBB. Thanks for letting me learn something new. Although I was keeping and breeding snakes (both venomous and non-venomous) more than 20 years ago but unfortunatelly I never got the chance to work with a Red Belly Black 'cause the keeping of all Australian venomous snakes was prohibited in my country (at least for private purpose). I only heard from other people that they are quite docile if not threatened.
Amazing seeing the snake all curled up and squished in the rat trap like that. I also let out a bit of a "whoa!" when it tried to fling itself up ^^; Good job catching and releasing it :)
My son and I found one in his bedroom..and thank god I saw it..so we cornered it into a large plastic box with a lid and drove it out of town. There were screams and chaos trying to catch it.. He was only half grown.
I've been closer, my mother in law came about an inch from my face once and she's far more venomous...
My ex mother-in-law the same, every time she opened the fridge door, the fish fingers would go for her throat!
What's your mother in law doing so close to your face? 🤔
i had a look in slow mo and it didn't have its mouth open so i reckon he'she was either going for the "head butt" or just trying to twist out of your grip.
I wonder how much his heart rate increased from already racing to light speed when the snake tried to embrace 😳 him.
Gorgeous! Thankfully all the Red-Bellied Blacks that I've come across, have been big scaredy snakes and high tailed it out of there the instant they noticed me.
Where is this place?
Snake wasn't striking, just trying to get away.
Lovely to see , care ,catch and release , way to go x
We live in red belly country with a fence line adjacent to several hundred acres of wetland. Been here 50 plus years and had many visits from these guys. I love them, a gorgeous snake. This year we had many sightings and I believe the reason was a similar sized mother as the rest (7 sightings ) were all around 35cm. We just let them do their thing very shy overall, however of all the snake handling vids I reckon most issues have been with red bellies. Thanks your very lucky take care
Great video for convincing me not to ever be tempted to handle a snake when I come across them. It would have been nice and warm in that trap generating loads of energy. That was huge for a red belly. I've had a brown much bigger than that in my yard. It was big enough that from a distance I thought it was a broken tree limb on the ground, at least 3m and as thick as my forearm. It was up in defensive S posture at hip height but I think luckily the six excited dogs surrounding it convinced it not to take the ultimate gamble. By the time I got the dogs into the house it was gone and never seen again. I'm sure had there been only one dog it would have had a go. A wise snake, probably the reason it had survived to grow that big in the first place.
My heart is still thumping.
One of these buggers lunged at me when I was a kid. I ran, and kept running for quite some time.
Run forest run !
I don't mind having a few red-bellies around: where they are you seldom see browns.
Why is that?
Are browns prey?
@@lmk2869 Well, they reckon it's an old wives tail red bellies eating browns....but there are videos of this all over the place!......In my own experience there is always either one or the other in an area; never both.
Only problem with the far less dangerous red-bellied black is that the anti-venom at the vet's is 3 times the price of brown snake anti-venom if your dog gets bitten..
I think it has more to do with Red belly blacks like to hang around close to a water body while browns mainly like grass lands etc but would happen from time to time. I have read Black's are immune to Brown snakes venom.
Not sure where you released him but I encounter a massive one near coolum quite often when walking my dog who is even bigger.
Next door neighbor's back yard.
Lost control of a warm red belly😂, beautiful ❤🙏 snake.👌👍🦘
I was catch huge Tiger snakes in Collie when in Grade 5, loved calming them in my embrace.
That was a big one. Almost caught it in the face. Way to get out of there. Good catch too. Great video
this is the most australian comment. almost caught it in the face hahahaha. love it
Red bellied black snakes are absolutely beautiful!
Why did this video didn't get a million views 🤔
Amazing looking creatures , stunning
This guy isnt actually a snake catcher. He's the guy corps hire to come in, find, and eliminate redundancies in the system
Is't poison..?
Welcome to australia
Jumped out of my seat! :-)
What a machine. Awesome
This guy should not do this job. Even l could seev his many mistakes and lm not a snake catcher.
Not sure how many years you have been catching snakes for but you are a monty to get tagged if you keep handling them like that. Dangerous and stupid.
I'm no snake catcher but I've seem 2 types of catching, by the tail and also the metal rod held on the neck of the snake and then picked up by the neck, which is your recommendation?
@@sovietonion72 tail
The red belly had a big belly after visiting the rat trap.
Swing by my place please. Got one in the backyard now that needs relocating immediately
That's just an average day. A dry-bite is a close call!
a huge red belly cruised into a festival crowd of several hundred when I was in Australia, was pretty amazing!

Such a beautiful creature. Only dangerous if we disrespect it.
What are you talking about, the snake or the man?
😱😱 Really.. I admire the guy in the video. Now, if I'm ever asked what's the job you'd not accept even if they offered to multiply ur current salary by a thousand - well... a snake catcher.
This snake is a real brawler!
I had one in my back yard he stayed under the house...he kept the mouse population down so I let him stay☺️☺️☺️they mostly shy and not aggressive
That's a good idea. No rats/rodents will last long. I would've bought a camera as well. Try to record some of the action.
Maybe the snake thought rats would come in to eat the bait and he could eat them instead. Or just wanted a place to hide.
He smelled rats had been in there before
This guy seems to have a lot of close calls.. Stay safe mate!!
He is one of the best I've ever seen. It's a very dangerous job
That fella has some giant 🎱 🎾 🏀
Ready made and caught for you there, why get him out? Just take the rat trap with you.
Well at least he didn't get bit, the symptom's from this snake sounded really unpleasant.
1 1/2 to 2 meters? that snake was barely a meter, if that.
I'm not trying to have a go at this snake catcher, I am honestly curious...is this how professionals catch and relocate snakes? No gloves or protection and it just looks like pure luck that he wasn't bitten.
Yep, that was close. Almost got bitten on the face. Never underestimate the speed of a snake.
Bring out my brown pants lol
Nice work sir #snakeloverbk
That would really get the heart racing. Strangely though I still think I'd prefer dealing with snakes over people. At least snakes I know they may try bite if you get too close. People on the other hand may try stab you just cause you look at them in some cases just about.
mate you need new people
It's on the tv news. They've said all guys in QLD are carrying knives. There's not other people. Society vanished. My whole suburb got destroyed.
You're exactly right. People ARE wild now. They must proove themselves before we speak to them. It'll be 500 years before people are social again. Everything changes so if you're in peace times, that must change really soon.
@@denisovanhybrid9610 society moves very slowly and that’s how long it’s going to take IF things start getting better. My predictions are 100% correct and a lot of people have died already without my help as a witness to the action. I’ve told people at every occasion so there’s no excuses from the general public. You’ve accepted full responsibility for all the disasters I’ve witnessed. I carry on knowing you should have listened to the warning signs and you should have seen all this stuff for yourself.
@@denisovanhybrid9610 that snake was still reserved when it’s head was millimetres away from that guy’s chest. It could have easily lunged 1 cm more and bit him. That was a love tap. It wasn’t experienced at biting such a large creature. Next time it will bite. That’s for sure.
Bad handler showing off and didn’t use the other stick to control its head, snakes can come back on themselves with ease and this was a close call....
well the poo would have shot out of me .
I freaked out
Well done Stu
Considering the fact that there has not been one single death attributed to a Red Belly bite since 1788, why the fear about these snakes?
yup....bit of misinformation/scaremongering going around. Their fangs aren't even very good at their job :/
You can get pretty sick and still not die.
@@RIP5582 Absolutely agree - but still not 'deadly'. Bees kill more Aussies every year: yet we don't call out somebody to remove bees. And we don't call them 'deadly'. Cheers.
Black snakes are essentially harmless you won’t get bitten unless you grab them……even then their bites are not life threatening
Dude brought the wrong tools. All you need is a pair of tree pruners. Then you get two snakes, albeit smaller ones.
As soon he opened the suitcase I got scared,Anyone felt the same?
do you mean the vermin (rat) trap
In slow playback he was very close to sticking his neck! Goodness....
12 gauge that bait box.
Why he opened the trap? Just let a narcotic flow in. Or carry away the trap in closed.
Its not that big Seen much bigger
almost was bitten...
Q: has anybody in Australia been killed by a Black Snake? These are renown for false strikes. Last time I researched there was no evidence that a Black Snake had killed anybody.
it has 0 recorded death! But people bitten are not going to have the same kidneys/liver longevity im guessing
@@byronbandit605 hmm, a very interesting guess that is too. Toxins are insanely complex.
The bites are not fatal.

Introvenous Vitamin C Ascor500 straight into a vein if you get bitten then off to hospital for some anti venom.
"Vitamin C has no place in the treatment of Australian snake bite. Most Australian snakes kill by the use of neurotoxins that cause paralysis. There is no conceivable way Vitamin C could interfere with such venom." www.walkervillevet.com.au/blog/pet-snake-bite/

Very defensive individual. Is that typical of the species?

Thats why you kill them first, then throw it away

Hate those things. Deadly reptile. Needs a shovel, not a bag.
I am total agreement, I would have thrown that whole trap into a fire and made sure the bastard could not escape.
and thats why I love my shotgun.
Not deadly.
Not one single death attributed to a Red - Bellied Black Snake since 1788. Not one death since European settlement / arrival 233 years ago. So, how are they deadly? Cheers.
Unfortunately, some people are just chicken shit scared and have to kill everything.
