Redbelly Black snake attacking a Brown snake

Came across this on the side of the road at Myponga SA, we saw the Redbelly chase the Brown across the road and then catch it. This video only shows the initial few minutes but the Redbelly eventually ate the Brown. To use this video in a commercial player or in broadcasts, please email licensing@storyful.com

  • The red belly is immune to the venom of other snakes as they are a known snake eater. They will also take frogs and lizards but seem to prefer snakes when they get larger.

    • Well , I'm a tiger snake and I gather you're something like a copper head by your emphasis on colour . Personally I've never been fond of the red bellies or browns , but fortunately for me my stripes tend to help me blend in well with my grassy , swampy territory , so they generally don't notice me .

  • I grew up in Australia and can say that I would rather face a Red-bellied black snake any day over a Brown snake. The Browns are much more dangerous to humans. The Red-bellies usually run for the hills when they meet a human whereas the Browns are much more feisty.

    • If you get attacked by a brown snake you were fucking with it. Sure they will chase you if you get in its face and start kicking at it but you would literally have to do that and continue doing that while it chases you otherwise it would just run away. Even if a brown snake was chasing you if you just stood still it would leave.

    • @@willywhy2642 Yeah, exactly, if we dont annoy or stir them, both will just look for an escape route. We aren't on their menu. Even the browns will flight rather than fight unless they are cornered or feel super threatened, even then they will generally warn with rearing up, head butting and possibly a dry bite.

  • Live close to Myponga. Have had issues with both those snakes. The brown is by far the most dangerous. You most likely will survive a red bellied black's bite if you seek help. A lot longer time span to receive that help. Brown, well hopefully you can get help quick.. Unless you are carrying a shotgun (and it is illegal to kill these snakes) for protection it is best you remove yourself from the danger. There are millions of these brown snakes in SA, the red bellies usually around the creeks, swamps, waterways.

  • Have read quite a few comments here but haven't read the feature which as someone who lives in the Australian bush, I think is the biggest or at least first consideration: brown snakes are more aggressive than blacks. Both can kill you (though the brown is the more toxic I believe), but the more immediate thing you need to know is that the brown snake is far more likely to attack you than the black. You almost have to stand on a black snake to get bitten. Get within a few feet or even a couple of metres from a brown snake, however, and there's a good chance he will come at you. Not a very pleasant experience I can tell you. Which is why we keep a sharp ended shovel at the back door!

  • Red bellies are a good snake ! We have not had a death from a red bellie in many many years! But the brown is a completely different matter, many deaths are caused by their bite , you only have minutes sometimes if bitten, a red bellie often attacks them so its best too have red bellies around . I have a lot of snakes here where i live and their seen daily in this street. They get into garages, cars , the house, everywhere and a red bellies are always a much better one to find i can tell you!! Browns are extremely fast and will chase you sometimes if they are scared or corned. I have funnel web spiders here too and red back spidres that will kill you as fast as a snake. Hell of a place too live really! And yes im in a big city sydney!

    • Eric Chen Im not far from the city on the Harbour ,but there is a protected bush reserve behind me, no houses behind me, only a protected reserve and it goes down too the Harbour. So i get lots of wild life even though im in the city. snakes Gowanas millions of birds all kinds of animals. Drives me nuts some days because i cant relax if the kids are in the yard playing because of snakes, the good part is its full of kookaburra's so imagine they eat a few snakes here. Years ago i lived where you are!!

    • Have many people really died from snake bites in Australia? I think it's pretty rare. A guy died from a tigersnake bite at Falls I think.

    • but then we would have a world where the weak and disabled would require the strong and capable to provide them with resources constantly and for the entire duration of their lives and this would leave those more suitable to survive and thrive to have to live in a state of never reaching their potential because they have thousands of leeches draining their production value, and this would in turn reduce the motivation of the young and ambitious to the point where they too would rather do nothing and be rewarded for it, and that would just be absolute hell for everyone..... oh wait....

    • Oh for heavens sake. Most times snakes just want to mind their own business and are happy enough to put distance between you and them. The last place I lived at, I saw eastern browns all the time, and have never had one do anything other than try to get away. I will say though, that I encountered one so ridiculously small that it looked as though the eyes had been painted on. He was sunning himself on my verandah and was a real feisty little prick. I tried feeding him (after stomping) to the local kookaburra but was disappointed.
