  • It's kinda mindblowing, as a czech person, seeing a foreigner analyze this movie, because I never even noticed the numerous puns and cultural references, until I heardthe translated version. Par example, the word "kozy" aka "goats" are also a slang for boobs, so boobs are literally in the title. The three guys are the main characters of a popular fairytale "Velký, Široký a Bystrozraký" and the movie kind of pokes fun at them, the "northern popsticle" is a reference to the popsticle Polárka, which is also the word we use for the northern star Polaris. And there's so much more hidden in there that gets lost in translation. I'm not saying this as a defence of the movie, it's not good by any means and I remember having nightmares bc of it as a kid, it's just a wild realisation that some of the things like czech fairytales which are normal to me could be overlooked by a foreigner because they didn't grow up in the same enviroment. Great video, laughed a lot!

  • Having nudity in movies and having oversexualized characters in movies are two very different things. I dont mind nudity, im finnish, we go naked to a sauna filled with naked strangers and finnish movies have quite a bit of nudity. But just.... Weird oversexualisation and boobs that are twice the size of the characters head and bounce like crazy every time they walk is just.... Ridiculous and unnecessary.

  • Okay, so I'll try to explain some things, since this movie doesn't make much sense for foreigners. The three weird ass men, "Dlouhý, široký a bystrozraký" come from a fairy tale where they help a guy save a princess by basically finding her by all those tactics they used in this movie. So here they're supposed to be older and kinda famous for their powers, that's why they have a contract for people wanting help from them. The North star is called "Polárka" in czech and that's a really popular ice cream here, hence the fuckin' popsicle in the sky. And that Lucifer's cheese obsession...basically in Czech folklore demons are dumb and ridiculous as fuck. You can make anything up and no one bats an eye. Those two devils are there for comedic relief. No other reason. Lucifer follows these laws etc., cause the hell works like some instituiton essentialy. Contracts solve everthing, you can bring someone back from hell, have your dreams come true with them and it's even a saying in our language "upsat se čertu", which means getting into some shit.

  • When I was a kid, I was so happy to see that there was an entire freaking animated movie actually made in our country. The reason I was so happy about that was not the movie itself, but the desire for Czech Republic to be seen by the world for what I/we see it as. We were long under the reign of USSR and their regime, and basically stagnated all that time when other nearby countries that were unaffected by that were flourishing. Nowadays we are barely seen as something more than merely a remnant of that era, despite the fact that we have incredibly smart and ambitious people both nowadays and in our history, rich culture, etc. We see ourselves, our culture and our quality of life as on par with other European countries, such as France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, you name it. And yet, we all still collectively feel that we aren't perceived that way by the outside world, and we do attribute that to the long-gone communist regime. It's a bit ironic, considering that that regime ended here over 30 years ago at this point, and that we've been "western" not only prior to that regime and prior to WW2, but also that we've been western again ever since that regime ended. So for me, an animated children's movie coming from our country was one of the signs that maybe not only we're finally catching up in what we've missed out on during the communist reign, but also that we have a chance to finally be seen differently by the outside world. Unfortunately clearly the movie did pretty much the exact opposite, lol. Some jokes are really quite obscene, and unfortunately all the references to our old children's stories and urban legends of Prague just don't translate well for a watcher who doesn't know these things. Yeah. If you want a good piece of Czech content, check out the Mafia game trilogy. All of those games are Czech-made, including the story of the first two (and the definitive edition). The story is incredible and there is no weird crazy stuff like this. Promise.

    • Another high-budget movie was made in the Czech Republic recently, called Medieval. Again, it's a story based in Czech history, and was actually made with historical accuracy in mind. Unfortunately, the movie is pretty mediocre and quite boring to watch at times. We're not very good at mimicking American-style movies. Again, it's a yet another attempt of ours to make something that will improve the way we're seen by the world, but we're trying quite desperately at this point and it just ends up not really working out as well as we hope every time.

  • As someone from Czech Republic, I understand why you would think it’s weird and creepy. But as someone in the comments already said - it’s full of Czech inside jokes, puns that we understand but it got lost in the translation or is a reference to our culture/legends which is kind of a problem with loads of our films being translated to English. However, it works the other way as well. Many of foreign films are not as funny or good in Czech because so many of the jokes can’t be translated to our language. As for me, I watch films in the original version so I get the whole experience. I understand you can’t really do that with our films because the Czech language is so complicated. Long story short - The Goat Story series is something I’ve always loved as a kid although I understand why you find it hard to believe.

It’s really weird in my opinion as a Czech girl but it also was one of my favorite tales when I was a kid. So it’s not a joke that they are named after what they look (or maybe it is who knows it’s way too old to know) it’s just a kids tale

Tall may have been the same, broad would become bigger when he drank water being able to drink entire lakes, Sharp eye was “sharp eyed” in a literal sense whatever he looked at would split in two so he wore a blindfold, and I think there was also a guy who was colder the hotter it was and hotter the colder it was (I think he could also freeze and burn things) thats all I remember though.

  • I am not going to defend either of the movies (the second one is better tho), but most of the story lines actually come from Czech legends and fairy tales. In the first movie, mister Hanish is actually a very well known legend. And the Faust's house too and so mister Hanish's story and Matthew's story follow these legends. For this one, the three guys, Tall, Broad and Sharp-eyed are actually from a fairy tale where they are helping a prince save a princess who is held hostage by some wizard or something. The thing about them is that Tall can strech, Broad can drink a whole pond (its important in the original story I swear) and Sharp-eyed.....sees....far. He can see very far and very little details. And with their help the prince saves the princess. woooo

In that story, the main charachter meets a few guys: the tall man, who could strech a lot, the thirsty man, who could drink a lot of water, the hungry man, who was always hungry, and another guy who was blind but could also see at long distances.
