IT'S SPOOKY TIME! To celebrate Hallloween, I wanted to take a look at a scary movie that wasn't intended to be scary: Baby Geniuses. I loved this movie when I was a kid, but watching it now, I am genuinely terrified. Come along and find out why Baby Geniuses is really a horror movie.

  • i'm an english as a second language teacher and had to study a LOT of language acquisition science in school, and this movie was SO CLOSE to actually talking about something real! fun fact, babies actually have a truly insane capability for language and actively lose that capability as they age. a newborn can distinguish between more sounds than any adult on the planet, but by around 11 months will lose that ability and stop making those distinctions (i.e. a baby whose family speaks arabic as a native language would stop being able to distinguish between "p" and "b"). there is so, SO much more to talk about when it comes to children and their innate language skills (shoutout to my guy noam chomsky father of modern linguistic theory) and yet this movie just made shit up!!

He was a horror director early in his career - he invented the modern slasher two years before John Carpenter recycled many of his ides in Halloween - so he clearly had a warped sensibility.

    • Adults are always doing that too, it creeps me out. Like if two babies are playing and happen to be boy and girl and someone says "aww look, they're like boyfriend and girlfriend" like ew what's wrong with you?! Why are you thinking of your baby like that? It's ingrained into our culture too, in movies like this among other things.

  • I remember watching that movie, there was some kids channel that played it all the time in the early 2000s. My mum walked in while it was on one day and was horrified by it, baby bunting was on the screen and mum didn't think it was actually a kids movie.

  • This is a very enjoyable take on “BG,” which was my first job as a visual effects (vfx) artist on a feature film. These are (& were) dedicated people. Director Bob Clark, RIP, who directed “A Christmas Story”; Technical Director, Lewis Siegel, who wrote the UNIX pipeline for animating the kids, the genius who went on to TD “The Matrix” “Moana” “Mortal Kombat” etc. The “cave” full of vfx animators; the editing team; IT; actors - everyone was top-drawer. Lewis paid me the greatest compliment when he confided that only one shot from “Baby Geniuses” was on his reel - it was one of mine, the coveted “Cowboy Shot” …“Serves him right” “Why don’t you go play with your “computerth” Basil? They understand you.” “They don’t like him, either.”(…still burned in my calcifying mind) I nailed the tracking, and especially the girl’s lisp using a 3D mouth interior pipeline; audio amplitude to drive “jaw-flap” that I developed using Excel, Ei, & AE on a Mac 8500. 🤭 Without Lewis’ leadership, & taking a chance on 8-bit Apple output and someone with few credentials, my career would have foundered.

    • Dream? More like nightmare. And I can totally relate. I’m about 40% sure I’ve gone on a hike with my dad to this one place. All my dreams are so freaking realistic, I once dreamt about my history teacher giving me homework, and the next day honestly being worried in class because I didn’t know what the homework was we were supposed to turn in. I hear about people driving race cars, and here I am dreaming about school and hiking. They always are things that honestly could have happened in real life. I once dreamt about going shopping for bar stools. And the next night had a follow up dream where I had finished getting the stools, with all the same people and everything. I must just be such an interesting person lol.
