im an aspiring game dev and i can tell you that the ads are loading with 0 connectivity because mobile devs figured out people turn off connection so it downloads some ads ahead of time with the game. so youre correct, they are essentially baked into the game

It is really sad, I feel bad for them. But it's also sad that the kid probably found out about the app from one of those "Talking to Ghost at 3 AM challenge (real)" videos, found it believable enough to download, and tried to talk to his deceased Great Grandpa.

There's a form of trauma therapy call EMDR that involves eye movement and desensitization. It seems to really work and no one really knows why. I would put my money on this being the reason video games help (if they actually do). It is missing a desensitization aspect though.
The idea that the cure to PTSD is literally flashing multicoloured lights is unreasonably funny to me. Like, cancer is horrible, but imagine if we just found out that to cure it all you had to do was drink a shot of olive oil or something equally mundane. The Pilgrims liked spooky things too, they used to amuse themselves by burning women alive to see if they were witches or not lol. Plus, a lot of those scary myths came from them. The Pilgrims drowned people, locked people inside barns, or exiled them. Europeans burned people. Also, vampires came from ancient Persia and spread itself towards the west into eastern europe before reaching western europe, what on earth??? I don't even think Pilgrims knew what vampires were.
