We bought a 2JZ-GTE engine and took the whole thing apart to learn why it's still an amazing engine nearly 30 years after it was released!
Check out Garage Sale going on from March 27 - 31 at www.donutmedia.com.
Special thanks to @kaiserkars for letting us borrow their Toyota Supra Turbo and @redlinejdmmotors for hooking us up with the 2JZ-GTE!

Please PLEASE do more videos with Zack and Jeremiah nerding out with their engineering backgrounds. I loved this!
give these men a raise before they make they're own channel.
What are their backgrounds?
@@98KingQuad Zach Jobe has an AA in automotive science. Jeremiah got a bachelor's and master's degree in engineering from UF.
This is true

As someone who loves cars but doesn’t work on them, and doesn’t have first hand experience working on them. I think You guys should do more videos like this where go over cart parts, how they work, how to assemble/disassemble etc. there’s a million KZhead videos out there that do this already, but Donut is the best and way funnier!
i agree with this entirely, love cars, but as a teenager without a drivers liscense or money i cant do much with project cars, so gotta watch others do it, same thing i do with computers (which i can kinda do now) i am the pc guy o my friend group lol, just watching hundreds of ltt videos all day
If you want to learn how to actually work on cars this channel is not it I love donut but others can teach you what you want better what kinda cars do you like I can give you channels
@13:44 if anyone is doing this with ARP head studs, make sure to coat both sides of the washer and drop it down into the head before you install it onto the studs; you cannot do it the other way around. @20:49 those two allen bolts are for the first VVT-I selenoid cam cap under the valve cover. Pull off the intake valve cover and you'll see the two little bolts to help seal the back of the cam cap.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
So...uhh...is it important?
@@justicedemocrat9357 Headgames motorsports told me they often break; and they have seen no issues running without them. But i think toyota designed it to help sealing, which is why everyone says to FIPG the corners under the caps to help mitigate oil seepage. Not hugely important no; but easy to put back in if your ears are still there.
Thank you for taking the time to explain this. I am building one myself and was very curious
The editors at donut have really outdone themselves Zach and Jeremiah look super realistic
Real
Real
RB26 next I hope
Yuh real
I hope so, unless they're CGI the entire time.
I’m thinking Zach’s Silvia needs some channel time and would benefit heavily from a 2JZ!
Zach said in the broken cars video that he has another rb25 ready to drop in that car tho
Thats what i think too😮💨🥳
It’s already got an RB, this engine needs a new project.
I wouldn’t be surprised seen as it doesn’t have an engine and they fit in pretty nice
I think they’ve done a few more videos with it and James’ ae86 on the Donut Underground videos
4:32: "Speaking of squirters" LOLOLOL You can see Jeremiah's holding back a laugh with all his might. XD
Would love to see more engine builds with Zach and Jeremiah
Zack and Jeremiah in a 2JZ video is the perfect combination we didnt know we needed.
A perfect balance of entertainment and education if I say so myself.
But being a 2JZ, that would mean... TWO Jeremiahs and a Zack. Sounds funky 🤠
I swear, Zack and Jeremiah together is the best combination youtube has ever seen!
Why dont u marry them
@@Bussdownbandit Be better if they married each other

I think this is one of your best videos yet, I've been a fan since you guys were in the garage attached to the house, I think even before jobe came to the scene as a mechanic. You guys have done an amazing job, I'm proud I've been with you through your journey. And I'll see it through to the end
Stock cranks have seen 1500whp multiple time. Love how they put the head studs in block before installing the head. And then skipped to cams. Cuz they had to pull them back off to be able to fit washers in head
The compositing job on this is excellent, it almost looks like Zach and Jeremiah really are two different people.
It's nice to see more technical content alongside the purely entertainment video, I like the balance and keeps me coming back

Agreed. Only became a fan this past year and would love to see more engine tear downs! 👍🏼
@@FilosophicalPharmer Yeah to see a tear down of the RB25 that zach has would be really interesting as well as some other rarer engines or truck/jeep engines
@@MJK-GC Never gotta chance to spend much time turning wrenches growing up. Got old somewhere during my lifetime. Admire people who are capable of this. Always have. I especially admire people who are able to make something better (ie. more hrrsprrs! 😂) than when it came out of factory.
There's a YT channel called I Do Cars if y'all want hundreds of videos like this just in reverse
I love that you explained so much about this engine. I was just very confused from a mechanical standpoint why you didn't rebuild it while you had it apart. All that labor just to show us the amazing guts of a 2JZ. Thank you for doing the labor so we don't have to.
Just saw your 2j teardown and rebuild. Absolutely awesome please do more engines and i would be ok with a longer version very enjoyable. Thanks guys and as always good job 👏🏽
Whenever working on any car ever: "it's only about two more seconds and we are done" Fast forward to 2:00AM.
How is this comment so underrated? 😂
this triggered my PTSD of so many mods and projects
or 2 years later.....🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Ah yes, the good ol' "it should be quick"
Jokes on you I started working on my car 2 seconds before 2AM
This is the closest we'll get to more science garage. I need more of this. Bart may not be coming back, but you guys are doing it big
is there a reason for that? I always wondered why science garage stopped, I assumed it was because they covered most of the basics.
@@Robb03 Maybe 'cause Bart left. He had life stuff going on I think
You've unlocked a memory, we all loved Bart so much!
@@certom1988 I was just thinking of how I missed Bart like 2 days ago lol
@@Robb03 Supposedly he had a baby so family life came knocking. I'm guessing Donut wasn't as big as it is now and probably paychecks were a little smaller. He works for MotorTrend now.
Would love to see more of this type of content. Could we see an LS next?
Will never happen. Don't want to expose the horrible block that is the LS engines.
They put an LS in a 350z I think
@@jsaleen17 what makes you say that? Bad personal experience?
I would love to see an episode: Rebuilding a 4G63T to See Why It's So Good 6 bolt rebuild vs 7 bolt rebuild to get all the Mitsubishi and DSM owner's eyes to bulge! This episode was lovely! I learned a lot about the 2JZ-GTE and can't wait for more, keep up the awesome work Donut and gang!
this is what we needed. Visually educating videos like from before. love this
Imma need about.... 50 more episodes just like this Donut! 🙌
Love these rebuild videos, I feel like I learn a lot every time. You should do a rebuild of the 13B-REW from the FD3S!
This episode was awesome! I learned so much. Would love to see more iconic engines being torn down and built back up. Nice one!
This is the kind of content I've been waiting for! Longer form, more detail. Please start a series from this; tearing down and evaluating legendary engines.
s54 teardown next would be so sick! or a k-series but those teardowns are all over yt (not that jz teardowns aren't lol)
It's insane how camera quality and angles improve whenever someone is filming a mk4
These two Donut guys have the best chemistry and the same style of humor. I really enjoy watching their episodes!
This was a great video for me Idk much about engines so this was actually pretty informing and cool to see it happen with such an iconic machine
It'd be really cool to see a teardown/comparison between gas vs diesel engines!
VW 1.8T TDI
@@txrsperformance7229 *1.9 They also made 2.0L too that rock when you put some power to it.
Definitely, or they should get their hands onto a 1HD-FTE engine! Its basically the diesel version of the 2JZ-GTE
@@boywhohasl1vedhascometodie469 except for that whole oil pump failure demoing the engine
You basically have it there. The 2jz was build like a diesel running gas
The editing skills to make the one person seem like two so seamlessly is crazy. Good job 👏
If those are hex head bolts those 2, they either go on the lower-end cover that goes over the oil pump and crank or it goes to one of the two upper plastic guards for the variable valve timing the timing belt covers.
I’m trying to learn more about how combustion engines work and this videos is amazingly informative and easy to follow along for a beginner
Great video The two bolts that you guys have extra are for the number one cam cap on the intake Side
Came to comment this 😅 I missed those 2 bolts also put them in after I found where it goes
I love watching 2 brothers work together like this.
r they real brothers?

One of my favorite Donut videos so far. And I thoroughly enjoy them all. More of this.
That was great! Do a 13b teardown next! Don't be afraid of the rotary... The challenge will be great for the camera.
Jeremiah: has an engineering degree Also Jeremiah: can't do simple subtraction
Helpless without his slide rule.
Me too Jeremiah. Me too.
@@wr1ght939I don't have any degrees, but the knowledge and in some cases experience for sevaral. I also struggle with basic math.
Thats what a calculator is for
Not much different from most engineers I’ve encountered
You should do an LS teardown and see why its the most reliable, and the most common engine swap! Also, please put the 2JZ in the Silvia. It has no cons! It will fit well, It is a video that would do well, we would all love to see it, and then zack gets his car fixed!
I think thats what up Joe's sleave....dont trust those blue eyes
I second all of this. 🤚
I also agree! Definitely about time Zack got his Silvia back! But also rebuild the RB!
Put the 2j in the Silvia do a tear down of the rb rebuild the engine them switch the engines
I think the LS, RB26 and the K20 would all be amazing for this series
Wow this engine is amazing, my question is, as small as something can be, you can always make the most out of it, so I wonder why other companies didn’t focus on this kind of efficiency and durability when making engines, or just any kind of cars, the engineering and thought behind it is so well planned
Looks like you two have so much fun together building that thing. I envy you.
Please more videos like this one! I love getting to see all the quirks and oddities of different engines, why they were designed the way they were, and what makes them special for their use cases.
They better keep making these videos. An RB episode would be rad. Or maybe a VR6 to make James happy.

VR6 is best 6.

These two are an iconic due, and love breaking down engines, keep it up
i had no idea how advanced the 2jz is thanks for making such a digestible and fun video
You guys are amazing. You should do more episodes in dissecting engines why they are good as swaps and why they're reliable and make power easily.
A tear down of a Coyote engine would be amazing. I haven't seen a proper one done anywhere and would love to learn more about it!

@Jonathan Smith your right he did. The only difference is the one he pulled apart was artificially hydro-locked.😂😢

A while back at a local car meet, I watched a high school team of mechanics fully disassemble and reassemble a 427 in... 20 minutes, or somewhere around that. Absolutely insane to watch since they had exact coordination, didn't see a single fault while they worked.
Impressive. Pit crews in motorsport can rebuild motors in similar speeds probably faster it's insane to watch
Yes, hot rodders of tomorrow engine team! I'm part of that, and as of right now if my team ran a 20 my coach would yell at us! Last year first place nationals walked away averaging around 16:50 I think? recently in practice we average 17 minutes but we're hoping to get closer to 16, and hopefully below 16 (between 15:30-16:00) before state comp. We're slow right now as we haven't been practicing much but after a bit 16's become our average that if we run a 17 we're mad about it. sorry for long response, just weird to see something about my competition in the wild lmao.
@@bearymos4805 Man, how do I join? I wanna keep the raccoon under the hood tradition alive as well!
@@bearymos4805 just watched a competition. That's awesome to see kids so into cars. Keep up the good work. I'm a pro mechanic and you guys are way faster than me or anyone I work with!
Probably practised so much beforehand. Still would not give my car to a mechanic who is younger than 40.

how do you guys do your research , because ive been doing m research in 3 specific engines and this one fac out of the 3 that i couldnt figure out this was back in 20014(i was 14 and have always had to access to stuff and im now 23 ) and ive learnt so much from u guys its honeslty hilarious how forums(from 2000's can tell me stuff guys can

Tear downs are great. I think it would be cool to do a EJ22 if you can get one. Also maybe a comparison side-by-side tear down of a Honda K and B series might be interesting.

I think it'd be interesting if you have torn down and rebuilt a 1.6 l boxer engine. I had a Subaru standard it was for speed and had a 1.6 l boxer engine in it and it had no Governor I could get on it and ring the hell out of one gear and it wouldn't overheat and it was always wondering why but for the little engine I can say for Street and off-road applications it did the job and maintained
Gotta say, the videos with Jerry and Jobey are my favorite. I love all you guys, but I enjoy the way they interact and explain things.
this is super sick. love seeing jear bear and zach together and these engine breakdowns are also dope. this would make a dope series tearing down commonly used motors. k24, rb motors, sr20, k20, m50, etc!
The RB would be great, especially if they show how it evolved over the decade or so it was made. Hands down the best sounding one when turning at full tilt!
The GE has alot more in common with the GTE than most people think. It's just ALOT easier to swap instead of modifying. Which is probably why the prices of GE's have increased as well.

Aren't the Non VVT-i GTE and GE the same internally? It's the VVT-i ones that are different.

its all in the block. The quality and hardness of the casting material, the consistency of the castings, the siamese bores, the bore thickness from ~5,5mm at the bottom up to 8+mm towards the top (compare that to a "good" RB30 block which would be around 4,5mm at the top of the bore), ~10mm deck thickness (RB30 is around 8mm), 11 oil return holes at 15.5mm wide (RB30 has 5 return holes at 8mm).

Great explanation of basic engine mechanics in this video.
I don't know if it's important or not, but... I remember a video, when James mentioned the gentlemen's agreement and those 276 hp. He also said that it's kind of a weird number. But a lot of companies measure power in KW (kilowatts). And knowing that 276 hp = 200 kw (depends on numbers used, when calculating), those 276 hp don't seem that strange anymore. The gentlemen just agreed to 200 kw.
TEXT THE ABOVE USERNAME TO CLAIM YOUR GIFT 🎁!!!
More precisely 206kw. The speed is also limited to 180km/h
I removed the k in mine, it does 180 m/h now 😂
At that time, Japanese car manufacturers measured their engine's horsepower in german style, ps. And in that way, the horsepower number is exactly 280 ps. Still odd, but makes more sense than 276 hp, right?
15:30 Uhh, That's wrong, crank to cam would be 2:1 for a 4 stroke engine; 2 Crank revolutions for 1 cam rev.
I actually learned alot from this episode, thanks guys.
Hey what's the best engine oil to use in the 2jz..
