2JZ Teardown: What Happened To The Rat Rod's Engine In The Hands of Cleetus McFarland?!

There is only one Cleetus McFarland, and when he got his hands on an IP-built Supra equipped with the mighty 2JZ engine, there was only one way it was going to go -- to the moon!
If you missed the first two videos from Cleetus, check them out here:
We Turned The Rat Rod Supra ALL THE WAY UP and It Pulls So Hard...
• We Turned The Rat Rod ...
How To Blow Up a 1,300 Horsepower Supra in One Day...
• How To Blow Up a 1,300...
Then sit back and crack open a cold Mt. Dew while you dive into this engine teardown video featuring Joe Irwin from Fast Forward Race Engines and Matt Watts from Induction Performance. The guys take apart the 2JZ (RIP) and show you exactly what happened and why.

    • What I wonder is how hard had it been abused before he ever got ahold of it, because seems he was talking oil pressure low right from the start. Don't get me wrong, because he hammered the crap outta of her, but who was banging off the limiter with the knob twisted to the maximum boost before he even knew it had a max kill number. Cause that severe number of cracks around every head bolt on both sides, sounds to be a case of long term extended boost pushing on the head. On the number 5 slug was there any deflection in the rod itself to help push the piston into the angle of the crack cylinder wall I wonder.. Yet anti lag used excessively would generate a high combustion temperature, but wouldn't this show on the EGT's logged. Are did it not have capabilities of recording history of any type, are even set up with sensors for such things. Which making decent power as it was capable of achieving, one would've thought these things would have been a mandatory requirement since it wasn't a budget build. Just thinking outloud is all, and not seeing what all was removed before it was placed on the stand. Just curious about such things

  • I spent many years as an NDT inspector (non destructive testing) Cleetus works the other end of the spectrum (destructive testing) there are people who actually have that job in the workforce testing the durability or hammers and air tools etc. Cleetus tests automotive parts for durability and to the point of failure and he is a master of his craft and has now ventured in the Aviation and Watercraft industry as well. As Dad used to say "that boy could f-up a wooden watch".

  • In my opinion, an oil pressure issue was evident upon cam removal. Double stacked head washers led to the head lifting. I think this eventually led to inefficient cooling witch caused a whole slew of other issues. Cleetus isn’t the first to beat on an engine like this and I think it’d be wrong to assign him all blame. Granted he should have given it a break, but I don’t think the engine was assembled in a way that this wouldn’t have happened eventually, no matter the driver.

  • Can someone please explaine to me why 2 Step is hurting the engine? In my understanding, you just cutting ignition to prevent the engine to rev above a certain rpm. Fuel is still injected, which should cool the engine. The boost which is being build should not be hurting the gasket as the engine sees the same pressure when under load. So why is it that the pistons and the headgasket got hurt? Thanks in advance.
