I Made a BIG 2x160" Belt Grinder (50x4000mm)

The other 2x72" belt grinder I made four years back has been the most used tool in my workshop ever since. So I decided to make a bigger one that can run belts up to 160" and features swappable arms for different wheels and attachments. The only parts I bought new for this build are the 12" contact wheel, pedal switch and concrete, all steel found at the scrap yard. Of course I also order custom sized belts (50x3500) in variuos grits, the 320grit one you see at the end I glued myself with ca and cloth and ended up breaking within the first 5min of use.
Design loosely inspired by "Bader Space Saver" grinder I have seen used by Matt and Ilya over @ThatWorks . What looks like a great belt grinder that is still being sold here: www.stephenbader.com/product/b...

  • Most people can follow simple assembly instructions, others can 'see' simple end goals and the best paths on how to get there...you however, are the true artist who can see the complicated and the intricate path it takes to get there. Fabulous work and video...

  • Hell yea! That’s not bad at all. If you want to completely eliminate the rocking then weld the old wheel base to a plate of rectangular steel to give a bigger foot print. Well done!

  • Sweet build :) You've mounted the hollow rectangular steel section to one of the two solid aluminum bars (top ones)... But why keep the second aluminum bar? Is there any reason to keep it protruded outside (i mean reason to leave it hanging as a cantilever)? Also, why is the motor welded above the base and not placed directly on the base? Any specific reason? I've observed some wear on the cast aluminum tracking wheel. Something should be done about it, or else you'll have to replace it often. I'd suggest keeping a hard industrial rubber base beneath the entire setup, or else the vibrations and sound will be YUGE (:p).

Although arc welding is the most widely regarded as the most versatile way of welding. wind rain or weather, even hell bent for leather 😂.
