Surface Grinder Attachment For My BIG Belt Grinder

Making a surface grinder attachment and permanent magnet from start to finish.
Surface grinders are used to make things flat. This DIY one I built is capable of grinding flat within 0.1mm (more like 0.05mm) wich is enough for what I'll use this for, I might be able to get better results with finer grit belts but all I have for now is 40grit and it's already adequate for my needs.
Permanent magnet is made of 20 strong neodymium magnets size 50x10x5mm and can hold at least 10kg of pulling force overall.
Linear rails are 500mm MGN12. Probably not the best kind of slider for this application but it works for now, we'll see how they stand time and dust.
I designed this myself but I have been inspired by @RedBeardOps for the magnet construction and by @BIGDOGFORGE for the hinged thickness adjustment. They both have great videos about their surface grinders so I highly suggest to check them out if you plan on making something like this yourself.

Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!

  • Hot damn, this build was so good man! So many brilliant additions! The custom shaft, the pouring of the chuck and leveling of the magnet with epoxy... the feed mechanism that is spring loaded. Gosh darn, truly an excellent build! I'll be sharing this one for sure.

  • You and Make it Extreme share a common theme: you make the tools you need to make cooler projects which means you can make more tools leading to even cooler projects. It's awesome watching you get better and better.

  • Black Beard, that is a great add-on to anybody's belt sander, you sir are very smart. One of these day's I'm going to make myself a belt sander, then make this attachment to go with it. There are so many uses for it, card scrapper's for wood working, homemade knife blade pitch & shim stock to name a few. Thanks for sharing with us, great job.

  • Nice project. Small suggestion: You may want to think about replacing the magnet with an electro-magnet which is powered up when starting the grinder (or via switch). That way you easily can remove the workpiece and it also makes it easier to clean the metal-dust.
